Use "Vinaigre Blanc" bottles you buy at Carrefour, just $2 a bottle. Use it for vinyl, inside lockers. Cheap and does the job.

I elected to lift the dodger since I was not confident in my ability to do a good woodworking job in Greece. My other two choices were to cut the hatch in half or cut the trim and rebuild it.
The front of the dodger refused to cooperate. It is somehow locked in place. I wonder if someone put an extra screw up into it and then covered it with the headlining. Graham Johnston’s on Zephyr has lifted his twice, with no problem. Not me.
Bill Rouse posted the photo of how a prior owner of Gerhard Mueller’s Sharki had cut the trim. Gerhard shared that with me when he got to his boat in May.
I could not see a way to cut and veneer the hatch without the wiper causing problems with the veneer.
Bill pushed me over the edge by suggesting the Gerhard solution. I had found some teak molding from a prior boat on board that would work, look OK and cover up my butchery with an oscillating saw.
The hatch is out and ready for veneering tomorrow.
I wanted to recount my experience to illustrate the multi faceted support of the forum. My solution was an amalgamation of several prior experiences by forum members, modified by my situation. I’m really looking forward to not having an eyesore masquerading as a hatch.

I need to resurface my hatch but, as we all know, that requires lifting the dodger.
I have taken out all the obvious bolts and the dodger is releasing except that it seems anchored firmly at the pointy end of the pare brise.
There is a ferrule (guiding the traveler adjustment) at the “pointy end” with two screws. They are out. No evidence of fasteners under the headlining at the “pointy end.”
Seems to me you should be able to take out the bolts and it should lift off, but it isn’t. It is rock solid at the front end. I must be missing something. Henri magic?
Has anyone else experienced this problem with a Sharki dodger, or am I the first?

It could be the joystick, but most of the time it is one of the control solenoids or a bad connection to these solenoids.

Re: Volvo D3-110 Sensor - Spare Sensor Sets

Ulrich Michael Dangelmeyer

Hi Ruedi,
Dear Amelians with VP D3-110 C.. engines,

You have hit my nerve, your thought to have an assortment of the most important sensors with such a "modern" computerized engine, I had quite a while. We had an engine problem years ago in Greece where the local mechanics (not Volvo people, they were far away) did not get along. First they disassembled and cleaned the turbo, then checked the electronics with voltmeters...it was a nightmare. Last was tipped on the boost pressure sensor, which was oily and defective. But then had to be ordered in Sweden, because the Greek Volvo importer had none in stock. The sensor has cost double (about 280 €) and was mounted in half an hour. The whole hassle was for us then 3 weeks houseboat vacation. No engine, Not good. But the engine is now running fine.
Some time ago (our common concern about this issue) I then bought at a BOSCH car Service the appropriate BoostPressure sensor, suitable for the Volvo 5-cylinder engine. we checked all varieties.

Original BOSCH number 0 261 230 295. four-plug connection, 1 screw hole for mounting. Cost 48(!) Euro.
There was once a discussion in the forum about the matching sensor, I will soon take the new one to the ship and compare it with the defective one (I have kept). If it fits: Great. if not, he will be exchanged.
Hope that helps you further. If you get a parts list for the sensors through Volvo France, let me know. Maybe we can make a collective order for the other friends with this engine, we have synergies and can save a lot of money.(Like the passed order with UltraMarine Anchors, safe more than 1000€....)

Best regards, stay healthy and fair winds!

Ruedi,

The best advice I can give you to get a list is to contact Volvo France for that list with your model and serial number. You have model C and I believe the latest model is at least H.

Volvo France is the ones who modified at least some, maybe all of the D3s for isolated ground. There might be a different sensor between some models. I am not sure of that.

The sensor that seems to be the most common sensor to fail and cause problems is the boost sensor followed by the oil pressure sensor, but this is not an analytical answer.

If/when you get an answer, please let me know, and if possible, ask which models of the D3, in addition to the C, the list will apply to.

Best,

Hi,

Yes the central spindle does pull out from the top. It can be stubborn at times but it should come out once you have removed the two or three inserts that sit at the top of the tower where the spindle sinks into.
You may need to use some penetrating oil to free them up a bit more.

Re: Isolation Transformer Sound Question

Bill Kinney

Chris,

We have that model transformer, mounted in the engine room (next to our MultiPlus) so we don’t live with the noise.

The transformer gives a steady 100/120 Hz hum that is louder than the MultiPlus, unless the MultiPlus fan is running, then that is louder.  We mounted it on isolation feet to avoid any vibration transfer to the hull.

Not sure how better to quantify it…

We have followed pretty scrupulously followed Amel’s rule that anything that made noise, generated heat, vibrated, smelled, or was otherwise unpleasant, lives in the engine room. In the case of the transformer, it made the wiring a lot simpler too.

Re: Isolation Transformer Sound Question

Arno Luijten

Hi,

You do not mention which model Amel you have.
I'm not sure how loud they are but being a classic transformer and a big one the 50/60 hum could be quite annoying. Putting them against a wooden wall could make it a giant loudspeaker so to say.
Apart from that you may want to consider the heat coming off the transformer. They need sufficient airflow. Also they are quite heavy so you need to mount them quite sturdy.
I once put a similar isolation transformer in a boat (in a locker) and the sound in the adjacent cabin was clearly audible. Luckily nobody had to sleep there.

Our bow thruster stopped working on one direction. While pulling out the manuals, I would appreciate any information regarding the potential source.

Hi Stefan,

You can buy them here (see link). I got them a while ago from this company and they are the exact same:
