Mark,

I bought 43 meters of RG-8X and that was enough on my A54 to run new cable from:

(1) The vhf antenna at the top of the main all the way to the VHF headunit (NOT just the coupler at the mastbase inside the boat) 
(2) The ais antenna at the top of the mizzen down to just the coupler in the aft shower, at the mizzen mastbase.

I got mine from Davis RF in the US - cheapest I found for marine rated rg-8x. I can't imagine trying to squeeze thicker cable through the conduits, but I believe some others have tried and possibly even succeeded. The original A54 cable is much thinner RG-58, FYI.

Get real soldered PL-259 connectors and watch some youtube videos on how to do it. I rubber taped the connectors and then put 3M electrical tape over it. The PL-259 are not, by design, waterproof.

Dyform is not better. It has for the same diameter more strength but is also more expensive. Dyform is a way to shape the individual strands into a shape that packs them more dense compared to classic rigging.
So in the end it is a bit of a trade off. Given the fact that the standard Amel rig uses normal wire, I struggle to see the advantage for dyform on an Amel. High performance boats like to use is so they can use thinner stays and shrouds. It is still cheaper then rod-rigging, let alone composite rigging.

I'm not sure if terminals can be such a big difference unless they are China-made. What can be a difference are the bottle screws. There are Stainless versions, Bronze one and Stainless with bronze inserts. Personally I like the last ones as you get a nice lasting shine and a reliable thread connection.

Hello all.
I know that a lot has been written and discussed in this group about rigging and terminals, much more than what I feel myself prepared to understand, so please let me launch two quick questions, now that I am about to change my rigging...
- What terminals are best, ACMO or BSI? Amel uses ACMO, but I am being promised that BSI are superior...
- What wire is best, DYform or WDS? Amel uses WDS if I'm right, but DYform seems to be better.

I was curious, as the interior layout drawings (and photos) for the Maramu have the double+desk. And I have seen photos of Super-Maramus with both configurations. But I've not seen a Santorin with the double+desk.

Maybe early on. My ‘94 Santorin has a double berth to port and a single berth to starboard. We have put a couple extra fittings for he Lee boards to make into a settee, unless we need it for a single berth.

Since yesterday when I tried to park in a box in a marina in Auckland my bow thruster motor failed. 
If I turn the beam to the left or right the whole power supply breaks down for a moment. After that the power is back. 
I took the rudder off and it can be turned perfectly by hand. 
But the same happens with the engine. No power for a few seconds, all instruments off, no rotation of the motor. 
Does anyone know this problem. 
Does anyone know how I can find out if it's the motor or maybe a relay that doesn't work. 
Can I test the motor without a relay, maybe on the 4 cables marked D1, D2, and A1, A2?
I am grateful for a quick answer.

We did the same, our mag drive pump is rated at some 800 gph and it works fine....it's much smaller, quieter, no more screwdriver tricks to get things going, no leaks and no connection between AC ground and Amel bonding.

Hi Alain,

 

This is copied from my email to the forum back 2020.

 

I found on eBay Leece-Neville part number K176101466, priced $30. This is a K section 8 groove pulley with 63mm diameter.  The bore is 7/8 inch with keyway to fit the alternator. The pulley was new and unused.

 

Micro v belts can go round much smaller pulleys. I think for the K section it is a minimum of 45mm. So no problem going round a 63mm pulley.

 

I then took the original 230mm double groove pulley, that bolts to the Volvo crankshaft to my local machine shop in the UK who milled it down to match the Leece-Neville one I bought. He did a superb job for £60. 

 

Please see the photos of the big pulley that has been machined down from 230mm to 200mm.

 

So I calculate that I now have a pulley ratio of 3.14 whilst before it was 2.7. Thus at idle (725 rpm on the engine) the alternator now runs at 2300 rpm and will be charging nicely. Where as before in idle it was running at 1957 rpm. The alternator only kicks in at 2000 rpm. So in the boat manoeuvring situation we will now have proper charge, and we all know how much power the Bowthruster uses.

 

The alternator is rated for a maximum RPM of 8000. The Volvo D3 has maximum rpm of about 2700 so I calculate that the maximum engine rpm will have to be 2547.

 

Seeing as that is really thrashing the engine and I never run it it that level apart from the once a year blast out. I will put a small sticker at the helm saying Max RPM 2500.

 

Total cost in US$ including new Gates Fleetrunner belt about $125.

 

Obviously when I get back to the boat I will have to align the alternator, but note how now both pulley are exactly the same width. It will be much easier than before where one pulley was 47mm and the other 52mm. The machine shop supplied me with a few spacers, washers of different thickness, to help but I may well have to have a washer made  for the final alignment.

 

So now that I have it fitted I can report that it works well. The only thing is that small pulley required a small spacer about 5mm for the nut to clamp it to the fan.

 

I also report that the belt that I am using fits nicely Gates FleetRunner Micro V 8PK1255HD

Whilst in lockdown I bought a nice new heat shield for the turbo.  See below, the original was messy and shed fibre glass.
More importantly I re-machined the drive pulley to micro v PK8 And bought an off the shelf Reece Neville pulley to match.
They are now fitted and aligned perfectly.
I can report, but only after a couple of hours use, that it runs well at much lower temperature. Previously the belts and pulleys ran 100 degrees C now 52!
Also due to improved ratio, at idle the alternator generates 43A v about 12A before.
I calculate that  max rpm should be limited to 2600 as that will max out the alternator rating of 8000 rpm.
The Volvo WOT is specked at 2750. I plan to make a label at the helm to say max rpm 2600.
Frankly the only time I open the throttle full tilt is to blast away any soot build up but at 2600 it all seams a bit much anyway.
So far no dust but it is early days.

If you cruise in the tropics, that will not be enough water flow.

From my Amel Book:
"The basic rule of thumb is 1 gallon per minute (GPM) is required for every 4,000 Btu’s of capacity. So, 9,000 * 3 = 27,000/4,000= 6.75gal/min * 3.785=25.55liters/min * 60 = 1,532 liters/hour OR, 6,75GPM * 60 = 405GPH. 

The original 53 & 54 pump, the Climma BCM20 is rated at 1200+ gal/hr (GPH), which is three times what it should be rated at using the "rule of thumb." However, as you know, when all 3 A/Cs are running, the salon gets its required saltwater from the output of the aft AC, which has been heated because of heat transfer. And the
fore AC gets its required saltwater from the output of the aft AC and the salon AC, which has been heated because of heat transfer. I really do not know how to take all of that "pre-heated" water into account.

Veco (Climma) uses Calpeda pumps and brands them with the Climma brand. When they do this, they assign a Climma number. The Calpeda number is BCM20/E for the original AC saltwater pump. Calpeda no longer offers a BCM20/E, they currently offer a Calpeda BCM22/1/A-R and it is 50/60Hz. It moves 1,700GPH. And even better is the Gianneschi 01CB22G302 with a 95MM Impeller. It pumps 1841 GPH and is 230VAC 50/60htz."

The thing that ruins all required flow calculations is that the ACs on SMs and 54s are connected to the saltwater line in series.

I bought a Dormaire magnetic aircon circulating pump rated 950gph to replace the old. Euro 264.
It pumps plenty of water to run all three units but is very small, about 10cm long by about 7cm wide and very light.  I suspect it will not last very long but we shall see.
It is also a DC motor so there is a 240v-24v power supply that comes with it.
It replaces the Calpeda monster that needed a screw driver on the shaft to get it going and it leaked. It’s bronze impeller has warn down, I think not from corrosion but from abrasion. On board was the kit to replace the shaft seal.
I plan to buy a new impeller and then swap back when the Dormaire dies.
For now it looks like the Dormaire is great; lighter, quieter,more efficient. No seals.

Take a flat blade screwdriver and gently tap the screwdriver against the tightening ring. Use some MolyKote Dow 111 on the O ring.

When you change the filter, use the rinse valve to force water in and air out before tightening the ring. Tighten by hand assuming you used MolyKote.

Bernd, contact the original builder of the SM gearbox. I assume he made the 12-volt version in the SN. The last time I discussed this with him he had about 20 new motors for the 24v SM furler...hopefully he has some 12v for the Santorin. Include a photo of what you have. I believe that whether or not solar can be integrated into a hardtop depends on the model and manufacturer of the panels. The Amel 50 uses SolbianFlex Panels which are made in Italy.
