HI Dominique,
Thanks for confirming that.  My solenoid does not have this button, but it is definitely faulty. I shorted across the main terminals and the engine now cranks but does not run. It turns over very slowly and the battery is struggling to hold the voltage up. I am now charging the battery.

I will order a new solenoid, and clean up all the terminals. The water pump over the top of the alternator and this solenoid is not a great layout!

Yes, fitted on a D3-110.
There is a rubber push button under the Valeo that you can hold pushing trying to start. 

The push button make a manual contact between both big wires. If your engine starts when you make a manual contact, the solenoid has a problem.
You can remove it and open it (remove the two small screws and after remove the plastic cap) You can adjust the contact (there is a nut between two springs).
I did that last week.
The solenoid is under the 12 v alternator

Thanks Bill, yes I know that the max prop can lock be locked for a purpose like driving a shaft alternator. However when paying many $$$ I wondered if there were other experiences out there. And indeed Autoprop is more complicated in design, and a little more $$$.

Hehehe, I have asked two prop repair places for a welding repair job, and both answers were an empathetically "no".

Is this fitted to a D3-110?  The one I have on #154 seems to be a Volvo part, but I just can't see the part number.
It would be nice to know that it fits directly on the D3-110.

I'm going to short it out with a strap later this morning and try to get the engine started that way.

Does anyone have a good wiring schematic for the original Pochon Chain counter. I have the factory drawings which are not decipherable even if you read French.
I have 3 cables coming to the panel instrument and 2 of these go to a box above the sink labeled "Chain counter". .In this box is a terminal strip which connects the two cables from the panel and also there are 3 smaller cables with 3 wires each.  which connect in some form to the larger cables. One of these smaller cables comes from the constant power supply and one from the counter on the windless.  I can ring out the windless sensor and power supply but what the other cables are is a mystery.
The chain counter is hot all the time when then the power supply is on. This is a bad idea. Having a hot wire in the windless when you are underway and salt spray is flying is inviting corrosion. Needs a dedicated  off/of switch.

I have the same problem. I also found the nut missing on the forward most bolt in the starboard locker so that is also worth checking. Its a good yoga workout trying to get a nut and washer back on unless you have have an orangutang as a friend, which made me wonder whether it had vibrated loose or left off by a lazy factory worker during manufacture.

Bill posted a couple of solutions instead of using the black knobs. I originally made the closures as per the drawing years ago from teak. They worked great. I then saw the metal ones I bought them and gave the teak ones away. . They also work well. However they are too long, are difficult to turn due to their length, and bang on the top of the side of the companionway steps. In retrospect, I should have stayed with the teak ones.

On the inboard side of the companionway there are two threaded bolts sticking out of it.

Sitting on each bolt is a piece of stiff plastic tubing inside of a coil spring in the first photo attached .

The locking bar of the companionway sits on these bolts,

When you tighten the black knob, it compresses the spring .

The spring allows the bar to move inboard when the black knob is released.

Please excuse my poor drawing.

The bar fits into a depression on the companionway rails.

To make my life easier I fabricated a pair of nylon blocks that fit as door stops so the door always lines up with the slot in the rails. I also purchased a pair of levers that make opening and closing the door easier.

Hi Bill,

I do not have it backwards. The springs on my door closure do hold the bar away from the door surface. If you will note in my photo I also use came levers.

Eric,

You seem to have it backwards.  The only "springs" in the system hold the bar OUT away from the notches on the track in a position that allows the slide to fall under gravity as Micheal has pictured and described.

To hold it up you must tighten the hand wheels which compress the bar into the notches.  Some boats have replaced these wheels with cam levers that work well to hold the door up without all the spinning.

D3-110 Starter Earthing Relay Part Number Request

Hi folks,
Today we launched Stella after almost 2 years on the hard. Tried to start the motor ... nogo!

I believe I've traced the problem to the Earthing Relay whose job seems to be to momentarily connect the Starter Battery negative to the engine block, thereby allowing the starter motor to spin up.

This relay is specific to the isolated ground wiring, and so doesn't appear in any of the Volvo parts manuals and wiring diagrams that I've found. Does anyone know the part number for this component?

forestay chainplate potential leak

I noticed a couple of years ago while I was in my forward port locker ,I could see daylight coming thru the chainplate, I had forgotten about it until a couple of weeks ago when I was in it again. Since I was on the hard I was able to get on a ladder and caulk the opening . In a heavy sea , or even rain water would easily find its way in. I just thought I would pass this on  to others ,you may want to stick your head in for a look to see if you too  can see daylight coming thru a hole where the forestay connects to the chainplate. This may be why my locker always seems a bit damp.

originally, the orange gel-coat is first sprayed, the the white gel-coat is sprayed (the whole hull), then the glass scales coat is applied, then the one-coat mat is applied, then only woven glass cloth.
As it's nice and shiny (except for the bubbles), I would say this orange stripe is not the original and has been re-painted with new gel-coat or polyurethane paint.
It is definitely no osmosis.
Sand off and re-paint.

It seems our wooden bar is not working anymore as it should .
