The boat was ashore for almost two years without power applied to the Davits, so my first instinct is that the Remote Control Interface on the Davits has "forgotten" the pairing with my remote handset.

Before I go digging seriously, has anyone else experienced this issue?  Any pointers?  Where is the Remote Control Interface located?

Re: Feruno GPS GP 90

Nick,
My GP150 suffered a similar fate, it works except for data output.  I installed a couple of cheap stand-alone "mushroom" type 0183 GPS receivers behind the panel in the chart table. One is a hot-spare, the other feeds the radios and the Furuno chartplotter.  I then re-transmit the data from the Furuno chartplotter to the B&G subsystem.  I left the GP-150 in place as it provides an independent GPS readout at the table.

You'll find those things at various price points on eBay/Amazon etc.

Joerg,
FWIW I ordered some from here

Re: Where to buy Corrosion X

Hi Joerg,
When we were in Europe we had good luck with distributors who list on eBay.de  .  We also bought CorrosionX HD (green) for some applications (think outboards).  It is thicker and stays in place longer but we used the original (red) CorrosionX as well (think electrical).  This link should work for you.  https://www.ebay.de/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=corrosion-x&_sacat=0

BTW I also recall that the spray pump/non-aerosol version is non-flamable and OK for packing in checked luggage.

Re: Chiller replacement of Amel 55

Hi Billy, be very careful adding a stop leak product to any refrigerant system.  When these items come in contact with atmospheric products they form temporary seals.  However, if you have air in your system many technicians believe stop leak products will react forming small clumps that circulate with the refrigerant contaminating and ultimately harming the working components of the system.  Under a warranty claim if Danfoss Compressors determines stop leak has been used in their system it voids their warranty, see attached statement from Danfoss.

I am familiar with both Penguin and Coastal Climate Control and I think both are very reputable companies.  However, I am not sure Penguin will ship Climma or Frigoboat products to the US since Coastal Climate is the authorized US distributor.

As far as your reversing valve is concerned these can be replaced in the field.  It is necessary to wrap the valve with wet rags, old-school, or apply an intumescent coating to the valve to protect the internal components during installation.  If you do this the system must be charged with nitrogen at very low pressure to prevent the formation of carbon on the internal surfaces of the components during heating.  Failure to do so could allow carbon formation which will ultimately slough off and circulate bits in the system creating problems.  I do not believe Climma manufactures their own reversing valve.  With a little research I believe you should be able to find an off-the-shelf replacement.

If you buy the pump bottle, you can take it in checked luggage. The aerosol can is not allowed.

Hello Mr. Filgiano. I can concur about Kelly Carver and recommended him to my friend Jim Watkins . He has surveyed Amel boats for my clients .Kelly Carver is a very knowledgeable boat guy who came up through the industry fixing stuff and coming up with simple solutions to complicated problems. As always, I attend every survey on every boat I sell and I am impressed with Kelly’s knowledge, thoroughness and work ethic as I watched him logically and carefully investigate all the systems on board. Very few surveyors in North America have surveyed an Amel 55 and Kelly is not amongst those who have. That said, I am sure he could do a good job for you as he is familiar with “Amel anatomy and philosophy”  and , again, he is thorough and knows how to find trouble. If you would like, if you hire Kelly, I can spend some time with him increasing his Amel 55 knowledge and tell him things to pay particular attention to.  Has the boat you are investigating been out of the water for longer than a year? Let me know and good luck.

All the best,

Joel

I have recently had an offer accepted for an Amel 55 located in Florida. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good surveyor that is familiar with Amels?

Re: How to fix your starter motor

Ron Hynes

Great advice! Two years ago I was having intermittent problems with my starter and I took it to one of Fort Lauderdale‘s better-known repair shops. I was told that it was in very poor shape and to really treat it gingerly since it was on it’s last legs.

Fast forward two years and the starter failed abruptly. After searching with great difficulty in replacing this starter motor, I took it to a local repair shop and was able to talk to their technician who in very broken English told me “ this is a Bosch and I can repair it like new!“  he did and even demonstrated on his shop bench that the specs were better than new. Always find the GUY. There are entirely too many under skilled technicians giving poor advice and only exploring the most expensive options.

Re: Feruno GPS GP 90

In my opinion, your GP 90 is at about its end of life. That said, I believe there are 3 separate boards in the GP90 and it is probably only one board failing. I had this happen to a GP80 and luckily "I found the Furno guy" in Darwin, Australia who had a non-working GP80. He swapped the failing board in mine.

If you can "find the guy" in Greece, you may be able to repair the GP90. The GP90 was replaced by the GP150 and both of those are out of production. I think you may have an issue with newer GPS receivers because unlike the GP 80 - 150, I do not believe you will find multiple ports, rather they will rely on the NEMA2k backbone.

Find the guy.

Data ports on GPS
I have discovered that the main Feruno GPS that supplies position data to the VHF and the nav system as well as SSB is only working from one port not three.
Initially the navnet stopped getting position but the VHF did, so I swapped the ports and now the navnet gets position data but not the VHF.
This has happed all of a sudden. I conclude that the GPS  had a problem.
Has anyone been down this route?
Any advice?
I am thinking it should either be sent for service or replaced…but maybe there is another solution?
