Hello David,
The solenoid valve that flushes the watermaker automatically (located above the primary filters) mat be leaking internally. Check it (undo the plumbing fitting after the valve). Olivier Envoyé de mon iPhone

Hi David
Just to confirm, on Amel54 #117 it works like you described: - handle vertical upwards - fresh water flush
- handle horizontal everything shut off - handle vertically down sea water allowed to flow. Roque Attika A54 117 Paraty - Brazil

Re: Solar/MPPT or Multiplus during winter lay up?
James Alton
David, Some gel batteries have such low self discharge rates that it might be best to just unhook them to insure there are no phantom loads and don't do any charging. The Sonnenschien Gels that I have been using can sit on the shelf without charging for up to 2 years according to the manufacturer. I unfortunately ended up going almost that long without charging due to COVID travel restrictions to Greece and despite my batteries being quite old they were fine when I returned. So maybe check with Victron to get their guidance since there are various gel chemistries. The most critical thing about gels is to avoid overcharging them so there is always some risk leaving an unmonitored charging source on a boat. Overcharging can boil the electrolyte out you cannot replace it. Best, James Alton SV Sueno, Vonista, Greece

Wilna Grace has twelve new 110AH Victron Gel batteries and I'm keen to look after them carefully! The bank is charged either by solar and a Victron MPPT 100/50 or a Victron Multiplus 24V 3000W 70A. I am about to store my boat onshore in Greece for the winter (6 months) and I am wondering what the best way is to leave my Gel batteries powered with the solar/MPPT or Multiplus? Hi Kevin,

We just replaced our c-drive this summer. Along with the new c-drive Maud at Amel sent us all the engine mounts , (for Perkins Prima M80T )mounts for the new c-drive and the base for the engine . So they can definitely supply the c-drive mounts. Best regards, Helen and Kosta on SM 29 , Meditation

Water maker - mental moment
David Crisp
I'm having a mental moment/doubts concerning the correct positions for the three-way valve on the watermaker (Duo 100 on an A54)
Restarted the watermaker yesterday (after it had been pickled for a couple of months) turned the valve upwards to flush with fresh water. Then the turned the valve handle downwards to allow sea water to be taken in from the manifold to the HP pump. All seemed okay. I've left the handle turned downwards as normal for day to day operation but I find the fresh water pump keeps kicking in every few minutes, I can only stop this by having the valve handle horizontal. As I recall/understood: - handle vertical upwards - fresh water flush - handle horizontal everything shut off - handle vertically down sea water allowed to flow. Am I having a mental moment or is there a problem somewhere please? -- David Crisp SV Wilna Grace Amel 54 #58

Re: Update to Bow Thruster will not go down
Mark McGovern
Steve,
No problem. I am by no means an expert but it sounds like Stefan might be able to assist you in identifying the component and possibly sourcing a similar one to replace it. Here is a link to a diode that is similar to the one that was used in the Bowthruster PCBs found in later model SMs like mine: https://www.newark.com/vishay/gi754-e3-73/rectifier-diode-single-400-v-6/dp/97K0535?CMP=AFC-SF-T11-US And if the trace is indeed damaged beyond repair, you can solder a small piece of wire in it's place to complete the circuit between the two through-holes that the trace previously connected. -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Block Island, RI USA

Hi Stefan. I have just completed a service of the main furler gearbox. Seals are available from SKF. As you would expect the list Maud has sent you shows the correct dimensions. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Bill,
Not to add more confusion to what is already a confusing topic, but here is what I found on my SM #440: The DC60-XCC oil cooler has two (2) x Female 3/8" BSP threaded holes in it for the oil lines. As sold by Bowman, there are no included fittings, just the the 3/8" BSP threaded holes. My original DC60-XCC oil cooler that failed had two (2) 90 degree fittings that were Male 3/8" BSP on one leg and Male 3/8" JIC 37° on the other leg. These were installed in the threaded holes of the oil cooler using some kind of thread sealant. The hydraulic hoses had one (1) Straight Female JIC 37° swivel fitting on the oil cooler end. The transmission end of the hoses were what Parker calls a "Female Metric L - Swivel - (24° Cone with O-Ring)". I believe that the 24° Cone makes it either an SAE or DIN standard fitting but I honestly don't know. That end of the hose actually threads into some kind of straight fitting that comes out of the transmission. -- Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Belfast, ME USA

SM & A54 Main + Mizzen manual furling gear boxes - seals, o-rings, dust cover … + source(s) ???
Stefan Schaufert
Dear Amelians,
I want to change all seals etc. for the main and mizzen manual rolling gear. I was in contact with Maud. She sends me a good picture, but cannot send me a list of measurements etc. and a set of seals etc. (at least not at the moment). The forum helped me more (posts and references from Pat SM 123, Scott, Ken ...) but I'm completely stuck now.
Not sure about the dimensions or type of the seals, I haven't found a good source.
So I hope that someone has a list with the proven number, dimension, etc. of all the seals required, etc.,
as well as a good source in Europe, ideally in Germany (preferably all parts together).
Thanks a lot you for your help.
Best regards
Stefan

Re: Silicone Bow Thruster Tube Seal - Video by Ken Powers - Installation of the aftermarket blue seal
This was a nice improvement of the seals installation adding the supporting disk. I had that in my list of projects when I first installed them but after 4 years of using them I realized that it was holding well. When and if I replace them, I will certainly add the supporting disk.
The only thing he was wrong in the video was the statement that the alternative method of installation inverting the order of the seals resulted in the seals facing in the wrong direction. In fact you can invert the order of the seal installation but leave the seals facing the correct way. I would also emphasize that the wood device provided by Amel to service the bow thruster in the water MUST always be used (in the water or on the ground) to avoid damaging the seals. This is because I designed their internal diameter a little smaller than the trunk diameter to ensure good seal. The material I used was silicone because it is more compliant and allowed a small lack of alignment between the trunk and the seals without causing a leak. Re: Bowman DC60-XCC Transmission Oil Cooler Failure; ZF Hurth ZF 25; Yanmar 4JH3-HTE

I am fairly sure the Bowman uses the 3/8" JIC 37° Flare hydraulic connections. These 3/8" JIC connections are, in fact, internationally common. The Mota does not come with JIC connectors, you would have to add them, but the Mota specifications state, "G3/8" (BSP) thread" This would be a good reason to not switch to the Mota. I am very interested in what you find. I believe that you need these fittings to add to the Mota, but Stainless Steel and Aluminum will not play well together. Brass would probably be better.

Nick, Over time corrosion will have enough effect that you will want to replace the copper. You have about 8 more years before you need to worry about it.
