Speed sensor rubber cap

Mohammad Shirloo

Our speed sensor was a bit erratic after a 3 week stay in Venice. I dove in it today to clean the rubber caps with my diving gloves. The rubber cap came off of the forward sensor and I was able to catch it before it went to the bottom.

I need to put the cap on while in water, until we haul out next year. It appears to be just a pressure fit as I could not see any sealant. The sealant may have just worn off in the past 12 years. Any advice on how to fit it back in under water, would be appreciated.

i have added pictures of the part to be reinstalled.

thank you.

Re: Air in the cooling system of CLIMMA Aircon

Nick Newington

I do not think you can have air in the sea water cooling system if the other two units work. The cooling is one circuit, sea water into pump then flows through each aircon compressor one after another with the final one being in the port forward cabin and out over the side.
Your problem in the aft cabin is something else, possibly low refrigerant?  Or something else…hard to say….

Thank you a lot for the advice. Actually, I don't find any water filter at the aircon. It is also very hard/impossible to see something at the backside of the aircon.

Thanks

Researching low profile solar panels

JB Duler

Hello,

I have a unique setup, an arch in front of the mizzen mast where 19W flexible solar panels were installed maybe 20 years ago. They are dead.

  1. I want to explore low profile rigid panels (the boom swings above it) as I do not think I can fit normal panels with regular height.
    1. Any of you have had experience with low profile panels? I would prefer low profile panels instead of flexible panels (but if I find nothing I may revert to flexible panels).
    2. The dimensions of the arch are 245 cm * 51 cm
  2. I can install a rigid or flexible panel on the rigid dodger where I can fit 45 cm * 135 cm
  3. I am also exploring adding side panels mounted on the Swedish system we recently discussed (Thanks Danny and Greg for the tips!)
  4. Any brand or dealer you would recommend?

The boat is based near Barcelona. Where is a good source to get panels in Europe? I know where to go in the US but not in Europe.

Thanks again for the help,

Buying an Amel

Paul Harries

This forum is superb, the one most important thing I have gleamed is to buy a boat that isin excellent condition as refurbished can break the bank.

Covid has changed things, there is a lot more windown shopping, jetting around looking at lots of boats is no longer easy. What tips can  you owners give on picking out excellent boats from the ads? Obviously I am well aware of  Bill's and Joel's services.

Dear Sabine and Amel Group,

In Italy a reference for Amel Yachts and also other sailboats is Davide Zerbinati (info@...).
He is based in the north of Italy but has a good knowledge of available resources in the country. Unless a better option through the Amel Group, I would contact him for advice.

Fair winds,

Re: Bowman DC60-XCC Transmission Oil Cooler Failure; ZF Hurth ZF 25; Yanmar 4JH3-HTE #lessons

Alain Durante <info@...>

Hello,

Just came back from the boat and took the photo here under.

As you can see, the MOTA is bigger and longer than the original oil cooler and that might be a little more work to fix it on the engine frame.

Not difficult but needs to be very tight to avoid to touch the shaft brake disk when engine is running.

Maybe it will be easier to only order a new Bowman oil cooler together with 2 additional neoprene moulding to be used with the old cooler as a spare unit.

Cordialement,

Hi everybody, dear Alain

I would like to order the Bowman DC60-XCC or the MOTA G058-235-1 / CC32.

The CC is 32 (on both products) but the oil ports on my boat are about 16 mm or 5/8 inches. Should I replace the oil ports to 3/8 or 1/2 inches (DC60-X or Y)?

Thank you for your help.

Lior,
Don’t know if this could help but I have got the same trouble once because of a dusty filter at the entrance of the aircon.

Dear Bill

my transmission oil cooler has a fitting of about 1.6 cm (5/8 Zoll). Should I replace the L fitting (by Bowman or Mota)?

Thank you in advance.

Re: Water maker - mental moment

David, the actual 3-way manual valve has been known to leak also...And, of course, it could be a leaking 1-way valve on the freshwater pump.

On  the skeg at one of the rudder fixtures there is a screw on either side fixed into I think a Nylon bush. They look like they might be for grease? There is no mention of this being a maintenance point in the Amel documentation. Does anyone know what these screws are for - see photo- perhaps they are just to be removed in the event of lifting of the rudder?

Hello David,

The solenoid valve that flushes the watermaker automatically (located above the primary filters) mat be leaking internally.
Check it (undo the plumbing fitting after the valve).

Hi David

Just to confirm, on Amel54 #117 it works like you described:

- handle vertical upwards - fresh water flush
- handle horizontal everything shut off
- handle vertically down sea water allowed to flow.

Re: Solar/MPPT or Multiplus during winter lay up?

James Alton

David,

Some gel batteries have such low self discharge rates that it might be best to just unhook them to insure there are no phantom loads and don't do any charging.  The Sonnenschien Gels that I have been using can sit on the shelf without charging for up to 2 years according to the manufacturer.  I unfortunately  ended up going almost that long without charging due to COVID travel restrictions to Greece and despite my batteries being quite old they were fine when I returned.  So maybe check with Victron to get their guidance since there are various gel chemistries.  The most critical thing about gels is to avoid overcharging them so there is always some risk leaving an unmonitored charging source on a boat.  Overcharging can boil the electrolyte out you cannot replace it.

Best,
James Alton

Subject: [AmelYachtOwners] Solar/MPPT or Multiplus during winter lay up?

Wilna Grace has twelve new 110AH Victron Gel batteries and I'm keen to look after them carefully! The bank is charged either by solar and a Victron MPPT 100/50 or a Victron Multiplus 24V 3000W 70A.

I am about to store my boat onshore in Greece for the winter (6 months) and I am wondering what the best way is to leave my Gel batteries powered with the solar/MPPT or Multiplus? I ask because I note the Multiplus has a storage mode whereas the MPPT does not.

Re: After market engine mounts ? #replacement

Helen and Kostas Yuvanidi

Hi Kevin,

We just replaced our c-drive this summer. Along with the new c-drive Maud at Amel sent us all the engine mounts , (for Perkins Prima M80T )mounts for the new c-drive and the base for the engine . So they can definitely supply the c-drive mounts.

Best regards,

Water maker - mental moment

David Crisp

I'm having a mental moment/doubts concerning the correct positions for the three-way valve on the watermaker (Duo 100 on an A54)

Restarted the watermaker yesterday (after it had been pickled for a couple of months) turned the valve upwards to flush with fresh water.  Then the turned the valve handle downwards to allow sea water to be taken in from the manifold to the HP pump.  All seemed okay.  I've left the handle turned downwards as normal for day to day operation but I find the fresh water pump keeps kicking in every few minutes, I can only stop this by having the valve handle horizontal.

As I recall/understood:
- handle vertical upwards - fresh water flush
- handle horizontal everything shut off
- handle vertically down sea water allowed to flow.

Am I having a mental moment or is there a problem somewhere please?
