Re: Number plate

Thanks Mike, I thought it may be pertinent to the recent questions about registered tonnage which of course as we know is not the weight of the boat. If we can work out which jurisdiction the plate belongs to we may save hassles getting a registered tonnage for some people.

The other advantage of the Amel 50/60 grey water tank vs. the prior models’ grey water in the bilge is that the tank doesn’t smell as it is hermetically sealed.  At least, that’s the theory.  So presumably you can wait longer to clean the tank …..

This summer, we used the cockpit drain on the starboard side for the first time to dispose of left over food stuff.  The problem is that whatever you throw down there has the tendency of ending up on the cockpit door which slides down into the space by the drain.  But one could put a board there to close the space off from the cockpit door.  Another option I’m considering.  Thanks everyone for your thoughts.  I would love to hear from the A55 owner who put in the through hull.  Does it gurgle like on Mark’s SM?

Hi Danny,
Years ago it was also called a carving mark, when the official registration number along with the registered tonnage were literally carved into a structural member of the vessel in a manner that they couldn't be tampered with or altered. The 24/100 is the registered tonnage measured in 100ths which relate to volume in cubic feet rather than tons weight. I think that the ratio was something like one imperial ton  was  the equivalent of 100 cubic feet of volume.
I vaguely remember Martin Bandy, who was the Amel UK representative explaining this to me when I bought my SM and a new plate had to be fitted. Typically Amel, Bandy never had a written formal contract, simply a gentleman's agreement to sell their boats.
If the second plate is in a similar format, is it possible that your boat got registered in a different country at some point by a new owner, hence the second plate in the engine room?
Best regards,
Trevor Lusty

I quite like the extended side curtains on that video for the Super Maramu.  The 54 doesn’t really need that as they seemed to make them just a bit longer.  This is one of the best that I’ve seen.  I only understand a bit of French but from what I can gather, he had it built to his design (shows the drawings).  It is very much like a factory A55 hard top as the inside is as pretty and well done as the exterior with solar panels and a port light to see the mainsail built in. Soleil Bleu has since changed owners so not sure if the previous owner is still reachable.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT7x0SjM648&t=1s

It was the best solution so far, but I have some thoughts.
1. It is to low
2. You can’t open up forward, where the wind comes from
3. With the hatch in the roof, you have taken away the best position for solarpanels.

Re: Furler /Foil connection ,rivets or machine screw

Gary Wells

Pat,
When I was in Martinique a while back Amel had the forestay down (for other damage) but they did replace the rivets with hex bolts that went into backing plates inside the foil.
They had the backing plates.ore-made and they fit inside the foil just right.
.
Much more robust than the rivets (better purchase) but..
It's bi-metal so steel against aluminum. So, the quandary was using tef-gel to prevent corrosion or using loc-tite to keep the bolts in place.

I opted on tef-gel and a re-tightening basically every month or after a spirited sail.

Cheers!

Preapring your Amel for the Winter in freezing temperatures

EricOpdeweegh

Dear fellow Amalians,

We are new in the Amel family since this summer and wonder if there are any of you familiar with te best way to prepare for the European winter ( freezing temperatures) while staying in the water.
Maybe even some of the Amel owners in The Netherlands could comment or assist?
Do you empty all your water lines, water tank? Ant freeze in your volvo and generator? Aircon spilt units? etc etc
Or do you in some way heat your boat/engine room? What to do you do when heating while you are not on board

Appreciate some advise and/or suggestions.

Best Regards

Re: which pump?

Scott SV Tengah

Do you have the electronic pressure sensor? On my 6E, there's an Led on it that shows when it is triggered by "a need for water" and tries to start the pump.

If the light turns on when you need water, then the problem is not the sensor. To be extra sure, of course, you could make sure the sensor is sending current/voltage to the motor when that light is on. While you're at it, remove the intake-output hoses and make sure nothing is blocking the sensor.

Otherwise, you may have a leak in the seal between the motor and the pump head. This is what happened to me when I didn't have an accumulator. It's pretty easy to determine if that's your problem - just take off the cap furthest away from pump head (where water lines go). If there's water/corrosion in there, your seal is damaged. Maybe you're lucky and there's just carbon buildup or perhaps your brushes are worn down.

Marco sells rebuild parts for all of their pumps. Hope this helps.

Amel 54 displacement

I have been looking over the displacement data for the Amel 54 and I notice there some discrepancies between some documents, I myself am now uncertain.  Have various figures and conversions been confused between imperial and US tons?

Anyway, what are the correct figures for displacement of the Amel 54 please?  Light and loaded.
