Thanks for that info Volker. I also have a Sharki. Hull#15. Could you give me the model # of the Raymarine unit you use with the Jefa drive? And any photo of the set up in the compartment above the sink would be really helpful also. I have no autopilot at all. Thanks, Warren Manon2 Sent from Android device

Re: Galley sink drain
Mohammad Shirloo
We flush the bilge several times with water and dish washing liquid once or twice every season and we do not have any issues with smell. I pour dish washing liquid in the bilge and leave the water hose running. This creates a large foam volume in the bilge. While the bilge pump runs, I also pump the manual pump that extracts all the solids from the bottom. I usually spend 2-4 hours a season on this task. In my opinion, the design is sound and eliminating this task by making an additional hole in the hull, creates more issues than it solves.
Also, as Bill stated, If I were looking at purchasing another Amel, this modification would certainly weigh heavily on the negative side.

The other advantage of the Amel 50/60 grey water tank vs. the prior models’ grey water in the bilge is that the tank doesn’t smell as it is hermetically sealed. At least, that’s the theory. So presumably you can wait longer to clean the
tank …..

This summer, we used the cockpit drain on the starboard side for the first time to dispose of left over food stuff. The problem is that whatever you throw down there has the tendency of ending up on the cockpit door which slides down into the space by the drain. But one could put a board there to close the space off from the cockpit door. Another option I’m considering. Thanks everyone for your thoughts. Re: Hardtop for Amel 54 and SM
I quite like the extended side curtains on that video for the Super Maramu. The 54 doesn’t really need that as they seemed to make them just a bit longer. This is one of the best that I’ve seen. I only understand a bit of French but from what I can gather, he had it built to his design (shows the drawings). It is very much like a factory A55 hard top as the inside is as pretty and well done as the exterior with solar panels and a port light to see the mainsail built in. Soleil Bleu has since changed owners so not sure if the previous owner is still reachable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT7x0SjM648&t=1s

It was the best solution so far, but I have some thoughts.

1. It is to low 2. You can’t open up forward, where the wind comes from 3. With the hatch in the roof, you have taken away the best position for solarpanels. regards Ann-Sofie S/Y Lady Annila, SM232, 1998

Re: Furler /Foil connection ,rivets or machine screw
Pat,
When I was in Martinique a while back Amel had the forestay down (for other damage) but they did replace the rivets with hex bolts that went into backing plates inside the foil. They had the backing plates.ore-made and they fit inside the foil just right. . Much more robust than the rivets (better purchase) but.. It's bi-metal so steel against aluminum. So, the quandary was using tef-gel to prevent corrosion or using loc-tite to keep the bolts in place. I opted on tef-gel and a re-tightening basically every month or after a spirited sail. Cheers!

Preapring your Amel for the Winter in freezing temperatures
Dear fellow Amalians,
We are new in the Amel family since this summer and wonder if there are any of you familiar with te best way to prepare for the European winter ( freezing temperatures) while staying in the water. Maybe even some of the Amel owners in The Netherlands could comment or assist? Do you empty all your water lines, water tank? Ant freeze in your volvo and generator? Aircon spilt units? etc etc Or do you in some way heat your boat/engine room? What to do you do when heating while you are not on board Appreciate some advise and/or suggestions. Best Regards Eric and Els Opdeweegh sv Abayomi , SM 158 Currently in The Netherlands

Re: which pump?
Scott SV Tengah
Do you have the electronic pressure sensor? On my 6E, there's an Led on it that shows when it is triggered by "a need for water" and tries to start the pump.
If the light turns on when you need water, then the problem is not the sensor. To be extra sure, of course, you could make sure the sensor is sending current/voltage to the motor when that light is on. While you're at it, remove the intake-output hoses and make sure nothing is blocking the sensor. Otherwise, you may have a leak in the seal between the motor and the pump head. This is what happened to me when I didn't have an accumulator. It's pretty easy to determine if that's your problem - just take off the cap furthest away from pump head (where water lines go). If there's water/corrosion in there, your seal is damaged. Maybe you're lucky and there's just carbon buildup or perhaps your brushes are worn down. Marco sells rebuild parts for all of their pumps. Hope this helps. Amel 54 displacement
David Crisp
I have been looking over the displacement data for the Amel 54 and I notice there some discrepancies between some documents, I myself am now uncertain. Have various figures and conversions been confused between imperial and US tons?
Anyway, what are the correct figures for displacement of the Amel 54 please? Light and loaded. What is the ballast weight? -- David Crisp SV Wilna Grace Amel 54 #58

Re: Galley sink drain
Mark Barter
Our Super Maramu has a drain under the galley sink that goes directly into the sea. There is an option to divert the grey water from the sink into the sump. There is some gurgling on starboard tack but that is the only downside as far as I can see. I wouldn't have it arranged any other way. The sump is so much easier to clean and needs cleaning a lot less frequently.
The only problem is that any animal fat that you allow down the sink will meet seawater and if it is cold enough it will congeal and potentially block the sink. This happened to us once. Since then we wipe as much fat off the plates as possible before washing up. I didn't install the drain but it is a very simple set up. The through hull is an inch and quarter. Re: which pump?
We have a variable speed Marco pump and initially installed it without an accumulator.
I wasn't sure whether our water hoses would comply with the "flexible piping" that Marco mention. So I put in a small accumulator soon after. The system has been running now for nearly 4 years with no problems at all. Smooth water delivery and plenty of it. Cheers Alan Elyse SM437

Furler /Foil connection ,rivets or machine screw
Patrick McAneny
I was just about to order some S.S. rivets to replace my old ones in the furler ,when I remember a discussion a couple of years ago about using screws instead of rivets. Is that the way to go now? If so what size bolts are recommended ,if rivets what size ? I can't remember what size rivet I used last time,1/4" X 3/4" ,does that sound right?
Thanks, Pat SM Shenanigans

Re: Galley sink drain
A primary collection point of the gray water outside of the engine room seems to be a great innovation on the A50.
|
|
Re: Galley sink drain
The basic design is the same with respect to gray water. All gray water gravity-drains to a central single tank and is then pumped overboard. The location of the Amel 50 gray water tank changed because of the design constraints of the rest of the boat. And, it is a lot easier to get to tan previous Amel models.
