How much gear oil is needed for the 'C' Drive
Eric Freedman <kimberlite@...>
Kimberlite is on the hard for it bottom paint job. I replaced the lips seals, greased the prop, rebuilt the spurs line cutter, and wearing out bearing. I also drained the gear oil. Tomorrow I want to fill up the ‘C” drive, but I forgot to read the manual and I don’t recall how much gear oil I need for Kimberlite. I would like to save a trip to the boat. Does anyone know how much gear oil I need for the “C” drive? Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Re: Rudder Stuffing Box Packing Material
rossirossix4
I believe the rudder packing supplied by Amel is 10mmx10mm (at least for Super Maramus). I just put a caliper to the 3 pieces of white flax packing that amel sent to me and it is 10x10mm. I think there ae several places in our postings that say it is 8x8mm. I think that is not correct.
Anyone else out there with some packing from Amel that could measure and confirm this? Bob KAIMI SM429

Not easy to play with the grey water tank for the kitchen sink . When you have a boat like A 55 to think for a direct sea cock is a true subject . I am studying it . Amel 55#63

Thanks Trevor, I think you are right on both counts. As I said in my previous reply if we can identify the jurisdiction the plate refers to we could save people difficulties in getting their registered tonnage. Kind Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean pearl

Re: Number plate

Thanks Mike, I thought it may be pertinent to the recent questions about registered tonnage which of course as we know is not the weight of the boat. If we can work out which jurisdiction the plate belongs to we may save hassles getting a registered tonnage for some people. Regards Danny SM 299 Ocean Pearl

Re: Number plate
Trevor Lusty
Hi Danny,
Years ago it was also called a carving mark, when the official registration number along with the registered tonnage were literally carved into a structural member of the vessel in a manner that they couldn't be tampered with or altered. The 24/100 is the registered tonnage measured in 100ths which relate to volume in cubic feet rather than tons weight. I think that the ratio was something like one imperial ton was the equivalent of 100 cubic feet of volume. I vaguely remember Martin Bandy, who was the Amel UK representative explaining this to me when I bought my SM and a new plate had to be fitted. Typically Amel, Bandy never had a written formal contract, simply a gentleman's agreement to sell their boats. If the second plate is in a similar format, is it possible that your boat got registered in a different country at some point by a new owner, hence the second plate in the engine room? Best regards, Trevor Lusty Ireland

Can I assume that everyone has a plastic washing up bowl in their galley sinks ? Its use reduces the volume of washing up water , saves the sink surface from being chipped by a careless saucepan and , not least , if you have really dirty washing up (a fish
supper maybe) you can either tip the bowl overboard or down the head.

Fresh water and washing up liquid does the head no harm.
Failing that , in England young mothers use a product called Milton to sterilise babies’ bottles . Does a great job on an Amel bilge as well.

Thanks for that info Volker. I also have a Sharki. Hull#15. Could you give me the model # of the Raymarine unit you use with the Jefa drive? And any photo of the set up in the compartment above the sink would be really helpful also. I have no autopilot at all. Thanks, Warren Manon2 Sent from Android device

Re: Galley sink drain

We flush the bilge several times with water and dish washing liquid once or twice every season and we do not have any issues with smell. I pour dish washing liquid in the bilge and leave the water hose running. This creates a large foam volume in the bilge. While the bilge pump runs, I also pump the manual pump that extracts all the solids from the bottom. I usually spend 2-4 hours a season on this task. In my opinion, the design is sound and eliminating this task by making an additional hole in the hull, creates more issues than it solves.
Also, as Bill stated, If I were looking at purchasing another Amel, this modification would certainly weigh heavily on the negative side.

The other advantage of the Amel 50/60 grey water tank vs. the prior models’ grey water in the bilge is that the tank doesn’t smell as it is hermetically sealed. At least, that’s the theory. So presumably you can wait longer to clean the
tank …..

This summer, we used the cockpit drain on the starboard side for the first time to dispose of left over food stuff. The problem is that whatever you throw down there has the tendency of ending up on the cockpit door which slides down into the space by the drain. But one could put a board there to close the space off from the cockpit door. Another option I’m considering. Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I would love to hear from the A55 owner who put in the through hull. Does it gurgle like on Mark’s SM? Joerg Joerg Esdorn A55 #53 Kincsem Currently in La Rochelle

Re: Hardtop for Amel 54 and SM
I quite like the extended side curtains on that video for the Super Maramu. The 54 doesn’t really need that as they seemed to make them just a bit longer. This is one of the best that I’ve seen. I only understand a bit of French but from what I can gather, he had it built to his design (shows the drawings). It is very much like a factory A55 hard top as the inside is as pretty and well done as the exterior with solar panels and a port light to see the mainsail built in. Soleil Bleu has since changed owners so not sure if the previous owner is still reachable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DT7x0SjM648&t=1s

It was the best solution so far, but I have some thoughts.

1. It is to low 2. You can’t open up forward, where the wind comes from 3. With the hatch in the roof, you have taken away the best position for solarpanels. regards Ann-Sofie S/Y Lady Annila, SM232, 1998

Re: Furler /Foil connection ,rivets or machine screw
Pat,
When I was in Martinique a while back Amel had the forestay down (for other damage) but they did replace the rivets with hex bolts that went into backing plates inside the foil. They had the backing plates.ore-made and they fit inside the foil just right. . Much more robust than the rivets (better purchase) but.. It's bi-metal so steel against aluminum. So, the quandary was using tef-gel to prevent corrosion or using loc-tite to keep the bolts in place. I opted on tef-gel and a re-tightening basically every month or after a spirited sail. Cheers!
