Craig Briggs
Hi Ian, Martin's figures are just the arithmetic for various wire sizes to get to 15% or to 20% of breaking strength, which, as he pointed out is what Selden recommends (15%). The 15% or 20% applies to all wire sizes and it doesn't matter what boat the wire is on. Do note that our SN's have some 6mm stays (marocain and artimon pataras) which has a 6351 pound breaking strength, so to be at 15%, the arithmetic gives you 950 pounds of tension.
You could certainly kick it up to the 20% figures Marin's guy Franck also shows to get to "Amel tight" although I've kept my mizzen backs at 15%. With new rigging you might want to go to the 20% initially to account for the stretch that will occur after some sailing. Nance and Underwood in Ft Lauderdale do an initial tune to 15%, btw. None of this is "rocket science". -- Craig Briggs - s/v Sangaris / SN68 Tropic Isle Harbor, FL

Martin Do you know if these figures apply to Santorin and SM as well as the 54?

Re: Dehumidifier Drain Outlet

Dean Gillies
Hi folks, Thanks for all the recommendations, suggestions and imaginative ideas. To close out the initial question, my solution was to drain the dehumidifier down the galley sink.
I cleaned out the bilge completely and hooked up the bilge alarm switch to my Victron Cerbo system which I monitor via the internet. I can see the dehumidifier running cycle based on the modulation of the AC supply and I can see when the bilge pump operates. If there is a bilge alarm then an email will be sent to me within minutes.
I would have preferred to dump overboard, but this was extraordinarily awkward to accomplish without making boat modifications that I didn't like. So I am comfortable with this solution. Thanks again to all. Dean SV STELLA ***** A54-154

We replaced ours with a confection toaster oven. I can count on one hand how often we used the microwave. Now we have a vastly expanded menu thanks this. With best regards, Mark Skipper Sailing Vessel - Cream Puff - SM2K - #275 Currently cruising - Tahiti, French Polynesia I’m looking to purchase a new 220 volt microwave that fits in our SM microwave cabinet (approx 23”x13.5”x15”). Has anyone replaced theirs here in the USA and if so which model fits in the space without too much customization? -- Kevin & Kristen Schmit KIANA SM #362 Currently in Brunswick, GA

Re: 220 volt microwave replacement in SM

Hi Marc
We also rarely use our microwave but my wife would love to get a real heating oven instead. Can you please let me know what brand of convection oven you installed and what are the measures?
Thanks and best regards Ruedi WASABI, A54#55 Von meinem iPhone gesendet

Re: National ensign on top of mizzen mast

Nick Newington
So, to fly the ensign from the top of the mizzen the vessel must be under way. You would then have to drop it and fly it from the taffrail at anchor or moored…or have I mis-understood the rules?
I have noticed that Dutch and Scandinavian boats often fly their ensigns from the mizzen mast and it looks nice but…. I would not in countries that are sensitive about courtesy flags, such as Turkey and many others…you may find yourself at the receiving end of an angry official. In such countries I like to buy a slightly larger courtesy flag than normal and make sure it is in good condition and keep it high…. Nick

Gentlemen, let me point you to the attached YRA guidance on where to fly the national ensign, which I received from A54 owner Peter Forbes some time ago. Please see 4b. It‘s ok to fly the mizzen on top of the mizzen and in fact, it‘s done quite frequently in Germany and the Nordic countries. I did it myself on an earlier boat in the 70s (dating myself here). I‘d be very interested in seeing how it‘s done mechanically given all the antennas on top of the mizzen of an Amel. Many thanks in advance!
