Re: Delivery cost from AMEL

Hi Slavo,
Keep in mind that Amel is a boat builder and not a parts supplier or a shop. The fact that they supply parts makes them a better boat builder but they do have to charge the logistic costs to you as well to keep this a viable process. For them these ad-hoc logistics are quite a disturbance of their primary process. Shops typically have deals with logistic partners to keep the transport costs down. I don't think Amel has enough volume in parts to do such a thing When I owned a Hallberg Rassy I found out they actually had someone start a separate company to deal with all these requests. On itself a very clever idea that may work for Amel as well but they charged decent money as well to send things over. So yes I agree it can be annoying but I praise the service Amel provides us with helping us to keep afloat. Just my 2 cents. Kind regards, Arno Luijten SV Luna, A54-121

Yes it certainly is a problem in Europe and a gamble as to how much you actually get charged when bringing items into another country. We are currently in Turkey where Amel will not ship items to. Probably due to import costs.

Re: Retractable bow thruster replacement
Paul Peschel
Many thanks for all your replies and tips! 🙏🙏🙏
Since I still have all the important parts (Shaft, bearing, propeller,..) and only the bearing housing is broken, I want to try to fix it first before considering a new system. So I measured the remaining part and created a 3D model ( which you can find here if interested: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1399ygbJxGDwj2QWs8F_ks_N7xXlpLo13 )
The plan is to 3D print the part and reinforces it with fiberglass and epoxy. I got a test print ( the purple one in the picture) to check dimensions, but unfortunately, there was no 3d print shop that could print in a high-quality filament such as nylon or carbon within two weeks in Cartagena / Spain where we have been hauled out. So I have closed the hole for now and postponed the project. One more on the to-do list :-) Does anyone have experience with reinforced 3D printed parts?
Once this works I will share it here in the forum and occasionally there will be an update on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blue.calling/

Delivery cost from AMEL
#spares
I have ordered some small parts from Amel all together for 70 Euro. Delivery cost from France to Slovenia was almost 68Euro. So total order cost was 158Euro including VAT. Other supplier cost in Europe are much lower, 10 Euro for this kind of orders. I do not want to be negative and AMEL is very responsive so there is no issue. Question is, do you experience the same issue? Or if not, how do you handle shipments from Amel.
For comparison I have ordered ZODIAC dinghy from seller in Austria, and some small items, shipment weight was 50kg, shipping cost was 18 Euro. I hope I do not violate any rules of this site. -- Slavko SM 2000 #279 Bonne Anse in Croatia

Re: Amel 55 - captain's seat
Nice to see all the humour and good spirit here. Let me add to this thread to show we are all different, and possible Captain Henry did get it right. I am 6ft3in / 1.93m tall and for me that Amel SM2K "Captain's Chair" was simply fantastic! Being taller, what I always did was to remove the Amel original rear back support cushion making me totally comfortable, and in tight manoeuvring situations (eg at the start of the video link below at notorious Dolphin Lagoon pass in the Maldives), or to get more breeze in hot sweltery tropics such as Maldives/ Chagos Areas, and parts of SE Asia, was to sit on the rear on top of the backrest where vision was great and breezes cooled one down nicely. The Admiral and some of our shorter crew (in the Indian and South Pacific Ocean crossings) also always had their favourite comfort positions in that chair too by immediately replacing the backrest cushion, and/or adding some of the copious numbers of small sofa cushions we had on the yacht to keep them from slipping in the chair. We all loved that chair! Being a tall person, the only slight gripes I ever had with the Amel SM design was the length of the bunks and rear bed (we changed it to a sideways large King bed, and loved that), and also the Amel original Bimini being a bit low, with no forward vision/window/airflow over the top of the windscreen. This was easily solved by lifting the front profile of the bimini to create more head height, and most importantly to create a window looking over the top of the windscreen. Should we ever purchase another Amel SM, if we are lucky enough to find a good one when the time comes, then I would immediately add a very nicely designed cockpit hardcover system for better sun/rain/heat protection. That, and the above two items is all I would change! Colin ex Amel SM2K SV Island Pearl II

Re: Amel 55 - captain's seat
PAOLO CUNEO
Hi all,
Nice and amusing the exchange between Joan and Alex . I am Italian and, according to the current stereotype, presumably even smaller than a Frenchman. As it is, I happen to be 187 cm, and the helm seat of my SM, which seemed acceptable to me 12 years ago when I bought it, is starting to give me serious problems especially on long overnight passages. Short, if someone has modified the seat or found a way to replace it with one of the slightly more ergonomic ones on the market, while maintaining the convenience of the folding table, I would be interested to know. We might be small but probably smart enough to try to sit at the helm once before spending a million dollar on a boat. Sorry guys :-)

Amel 55 - captain's seat
Hello,
I just got an Amel after owning X-Yachts and Albin Express before. Has any of.the other Amel 55 owners made any modifications to the captain's seat? With my 185cm height it's really to small for me to sit comfortably. There is no way to adjust the seat.. My back starts to hurt when sailing.... That's not good. It seems the seat is designed for smaller french people. Sorry guys. :-) I wonder if any other owners recognise this problem. Kind regards, Joan Amel55

Re: Standing rigging
Hi Ian,
Martin's figures are just the arithmetic for various wire sizes to get to 15% or to 20% of breaking strength, which, as he pointed out is what Selden recommends (15%). The 15% or 20% applies to all wire sizes and it doesn't matter what boat the wire is on. Do note that our SN's have some 6mm stays (marocain and artimon pataras) which has a 6351 pound breaking strength, so to be at 15%, the arithmetic gives you 950 pounds of tension. You could certainly kick it up to the 20% figures Marin's guy Franck also shows to get to "Amel tight" although I've kept my mizzen backs at 15%. With new rigging you might want to go to the 20% initially to account for the stretch that will occur after some sailing. Nance and Underwood in Ft Lauderdale do an initial tune to 15%, btw. None of this is "rocket science". -- Craig Briggs - s/v Sangaris / SN68 Tropic Isle Harbor, FL
