Re: Skin Fittings Glassed in??

TruDesign offers through hull fittings as well as their ball valves. Because they are in plastic no bonding is needed. However the dimension of the ball valves is a little bit larger than the bronze ones. People using TruDesign are talking about the long life of their fittings.

Skin Fittings Glassed in??

Chris Warren

I am the proud new owner of a Maramu #69, this forum is a wealth of information which I am very appreciative of. I have some rectification work to do on the boat and one of the priority jobs is to replace the sea cocks.

Most of the skin fittings are the original Amel ones which are glassed in, While I have been able to find some information on the site regarding the replacement of the valves I have not found any information on why Amel chose to do this. I like the fact that they are flush and secure however would be interested to know if there are any other reasons? Do these often need to be replaced?

I was planning on using Maestrini or Groco bronze seacocks (or maybe even Tru Design if the skin fitting needs replacement as well as the seacock). I understand that you need to ensure that they are all bonded which is why I would not replace bronze valves with composite with a bronze through hull.

thanks for you input and the great forum!

Re: Ultrasonic Wind Sensors

Bill Kinney

Mike & Peta,

I used an Airmar WX220 on my old boat, and it worked fine.  This unit is not as accurate (especially with wind direction) as the B&G unit, but for must cruising boats that's not a big deal. The only time it can be a problem is when steering to the AWA while close hauled.  Under those conditions that +/-3 degree specification can be an issue.  The CV7 unit (which I have no personnel experience with) quotes a +/-1 degree accuracy for wind angle.  That would be better, for sure.

It was nice having all the extra weather data available from the WX220 on the NMEA network.  Don't expect the GPS to be very useful, especially for SOG.  The mast movement in a seaway is counted as boat speed, and results in some very odd data...

Overall a plus, and if we had to replace our B&G I'd consider an untrasonic unit again.

Machining AMEL-specific tools in NZ

David Vogel

Calling all SM owners in NZ.

Having done a small run of the copper grounding straps for the grey-water bilge, and been happy with the results, I am now planning on getting some AMEL-specific tools machined - for example, the puller for the main-outhaul line-handling winch/motor/gearbox assembly.

It may be possible to come to some kind of economy-of-scale arrangement with the fabricator/s. Even if not, if you have any hints or tips on where to go / who to use, I would be interested to hear; or, if you're wanting to bolster your tool-kit with that special nick-knack ...

If you’re interested in getting involved, please get back to me via this forum; I would then plan to take the discussion off-line for resolving the nitty-gritty.

Thanks, and best to all,

David

All the best for 2022 to all Amelians

For those who are interested, here a supplement on the subject of fully battened main:
By chance, I spoke to the former owner of the Super Maramu Stenella today. (Sold eight weeks ago.) He had replaced the main and mizzen on his Super Maramu with fully battened sails in 2011. The sailmaker was Beilken. All battens are consistently led to the foot of the sail. As he reported, there have never been any problems with the battened sails when furling, unfurling or reefing over the years!

works great, recommend it. You can reuse 2 of the mounting holes. With a small piece of aluminium you can prepare the mounting before you climb the mast, so no drilling at the mast top ;-)

Has anyone refitted with an ultrasonic wind sensor and what has been the experience?

Appreciate the help.

Hi Mike,

I do not have an ohm meter here.

Please check your parts manual.

It would not be cost effective to ship to NZ.

I Have 1 switch left now.

Hi Kent,
You should still be able to see the pics at  https://photos.app.goo.gl/DMXzPz9SzpwEXZW19  Let me know if you can't see the pics .   Posting is here  https://amelyachtowners.groups.io/g/main/message/61304

A few clarifications and suggestions:  1)We did not need to remove that back panel, just the arch piece of  wood you see at the top of the wooden panel.  Ours comes off with a couple of screws.  If there are no wires there you can run wires from either side of the cabinet areas of the aft stateroom.  Because it is even with the top of the lazerette you could even run wires from the 24V receptacle in the lazerette without causing any problem and run them inside that wood trim piece.  The fan requires very little amperage and wire can be thin.  The addition of a fuse would be proper. 2) On our boat the fan is mounted on the wood that frames the hatch opening--other SM models might be different.  Hold the Scirocco to check to make sure that it can lock back out of the way as shown in the second photo before mounting.  It should just fit and usually requres that you rotate the gimballed frame to stow  3)Because it is below the hatch you want to be careful to prevent rain or splashes from following seas.  We have not had a failure due to this although I have given the motor a prophylactic shot of CorrosionX--do this when you won't be using the aft cabin for a while unless you cherish the aroma of CorrosionX. 4)We measured and you could place 2 of the Sciroccos side by side for even more ventilation--I haven't done that but it would be a nice option.  5) I don't ever think we have needed the fan to run all night, so the variable timer is really nice.  Let us know if you have any oher questions.

The hose can be made by any hydraulic shop. It is quite easy and inexpensive. Get one with a reinforced steel braid. On Kimberlite I just looked at the existing one and ordered a spare online it was quite easy. Unfortunately, I am not on board at the present time.
