Re: B&G Forward Scan Transducer Install
Danny and Yvonne SIMMS
Hi Pat, we have the interphase forward sonar. In conversations with others with the same unit the verdict was generally negative. However I have found it to be all in the adjustments or tuning. Get it right and it is quite good. But that comes down to your expectations I guess.I do believe if it is mounted too far forward and not deep enough it will read surface water motion as a target. However I encourage you to try different range and sensitivity settings. This worked for me.
Kind Regards
Danny

Hi guys, Another option is to modify a flat head bit with an angle grinder or something up to the task. Kind of primitive, but it works. Take proper precautions of course - vice, safety glasses, etc. Cheers, Mike Longcor SV Trilogy SM23 NZ

Re: Screwdriver bits and nuts
Hello, I had to get one of these for working on something else, I ended up getting this from Amazon in the US: https://www.amazon.com/Megapro-151TP-Tamperproof-Driver-Black/dp/B004VJY1B0 It's a multi-bit screwdriver with many of the common security bits. I think that is what you are looking for, however check out the bits it comes with and make sure. The quality is pretty good and it worked for my use. It was about $32 when I bought it and it seems like it still is around that price. - Justin Hopeful future AMEL owner.

Mike & Eric,
You have figured correctly. In the method I used the epoxy is ONLY inside the foil, not overflowing into the collar that connects the foil to the gearbox. Anytime you need to get epoxy to lose its grip, apply heat. Most cured epoxies begin to soften at relatively modest temperatures, usually below 100C. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Hollywood, FL, USA

Thanks for your correction . I see what you mean. Seems Bill did it the right way and the previous owner of ABAYOMI ( Nathape) not . The manual gear box is still doing ok so I guese I will have to have a collar pre machined and once it comes up change it the right way. Cant think of an other way right now but if you have a solution do not hesitate to jump in. Here a photo of the situation. Took out the lower bolt but the top one and collar would come out. You can see the epoxy on the top edge of the collar. Did not want to force it as all appears ok and someone told me if it is not broken don’t fix it😂 Only wanted to check and pre maintain the Manual gearbox. Rgrds Eric Abayomi SM 158

Hi Eric, Bill's method has the bottom of the foil taped to hold the epoxy while it cures. Only after the epoxy cures is the foil put back into the collar and bolted in place. If yours was repaired in place, it is possible epoxy has bonded the foil to the collar. I'm not sure if there's an option to separate them beside the procedure you've outlined. I will think on this. Maybe someone else has an idea. Regards, Mike Longcor SV Trilogy SM23 NZ

Just another quick thought... You can always use your current gypsy on your new windlass. Even after 38 years, I am guessing the gypsy still has a lot of life left!

Hi Bill,

Have been reading your weblog about your repair solution of the main foil collar filling with epoxy. My question would be what to do when you need to overhaul your manual furler gearbox? We own now ABAYOMI since June last year and found the previous owner did the same you did and filled the collar with epoxy. But this means we need to cut just above the collar to be able to get the manual gear box off when we want to replace the seals and O rings in the manual furler gearbox . This would mean I have to machine a new custom made collar as Amel can not supply those anymore.( I checked last month with Maud) Do you have the same situation now or did I mis read the way you did it? I my opinion a half round bar filler in the foil would be a good alternative. Best Regards, Eric Opdeweegh Abayomi SM 158 Currently in Holland

Re: Rebuild of Main , manual gearbox

This is how we did ours. http://fetchinketch.net/boat-projects/amel-mainsail-foil-repair/ Come back to us in another ten years and we'll let you know how long it might last, but after three years, it is still perfect. A LOT cheaper than the Amel kit, although that should be a very minor consideration for such a critical part.
The Amel kit either wasn't yet available, or just a well guarded secret when we did our repair. The kit from Amel looks to me to be a LOT more robust than the original design, but if I had to do it over again, I still would do it the way I did. For anybody needing to do this repair, I would STRONGLY discourage just drilling a new hole and calling that good. The foil does not have enough thickness of metal to transmit the torque from the motor via a single pin without very rapid wear. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Hollywood FL, USA

Hi Rob,
Many times it is stamped on the gypsy itself on the face where where the chain lays around it, When we were in Europe SVB 24 had good prices. https://www.svb24.com/en/lofrans-tigres-windlass.html Bob, KAIMI SM 429

Re: B&G Forward Scan Transducer Install
Hi Matt & Michelle, I have installed a forward scan in 2019. I installed the transducer on the starboard side next to the depth transducer. I am running it on a Simard nss16evo2 and I am using it every day in the Caribbean’s. Best regards. Juan de Zulueta +33680895892 SM 32 Ophelie X sent from my Ipad.

Re: Lofrans Tigres

I am surprised you could keep on of these windlasses going so long! Good job! I'd be MORE surprised if you have the original 38 year old chain, and, of course, the size of that is really what controls the selection of the gypsy. Assuming you are looking to match your existing chain...
The Lofrans' gypsy has numbers for the size cast into into it, although they might be a bit hard to see if it has been hauling chain for 38 years. Assuming your current gypsy works well with your current chain, that might be your best guide. Failing that, it is usually recommended that you use a half meter or so of chain to test a gypsy before purchase, although that is not always possible of course. Careful measurement of the chain can also tell the difference between similar specifications. Here is a useful table: rode-sizing Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Hollywood, FL

Re: B&G Forward Scan Transducer Install
Patrick McAneny
Matt, I had my transducer installed by a marine electrical company, due to it being covered by an insurance claim. I have installed a few transducers and it is pretty straightforward. With the forward scan you need to locate it down as low and forward as possible and of course the transducer needs to be installed absolutely level by contouring the plastic shim to fit the hull , of course it needs to face absolutely forward.
Having said that, I will now say if I had to do it again , I would have saved my money and not installed it. Maybe it is just my experiences, but I find the images so erratic,to be useless. I thought it was because of the soft mud of the Chesapeake affecting the returns, but I am now in the Bahamas with packed sand and the returns are still useless. I wish it worked well here , but it does not and I don’t even turn it on. I have spoken to the B&G reps. At the Annapolis boat show the last two years, even showing them videos of the erratic display. They had no explanations, when I asserted that they would not sell a product that is useless, would they. I hope you have better luck than me, most everyone does, in any circumstance. I have the Luck of the Irish, but not the good type. Good luck, Patrick McAneny SM Shenanigans Black Point, Bahamas
