Re: [Amel] Security grill for main hatch
john martin <symoondog@...>
Look under the folder of photos on this site called "Moon Dog." The security grills (2 pieces) are made from 1/4 x 1 inch flat aluminum, they have to be made in two parts to clear the dodger. Also note the stainless steel bars on all hatches. I have been using these bars on my boats for over 35 years, even on my beloved Chesapeake Bay in the US. It always amazes me how a person would not think of going to sleep at night in his hometown without locking all doors and windows, but will come to a strange, poor, third world country and go to sleep with the front door wide open. Re: [Amel] Anti-foul Removal
Steve Constantine <svsummerlove@...>
I haven't used this on my AMEL, but have experience with it on a previous boat. Marine Peel-Away is a very good, and environmentally safe way to remove bottom paint. It's safe for gelcoat, and even varnish from most woods. Be careful to buy the correct one though. There are several "versions" of it and all aren't safe on the same surfaces (example: some work on concrete, and are a lot more powerful).
It uses a method of applying a thick layer of slow-drying solvent gel, which is then covered with special paper (supplied with the kit). The paper prevents the solvent from drying out, and at the same time absorbs the multiple layers of old paint. After about 24 hours, you peel the paper off, and all the layers of paint come with it. You just roll it up and put it in the appropriate recycling receptacle. There may be some patches of paint left, but it's easily removed with a second spot application. It's a LOT easier, safer, neater and cleaner than any other method I've ever used. The one major downside is it's very expensive. Probably still a lot cheaper than the government fine for spilling 5 gallons of liquid paint remover and 10 layers of old paint into the harbor though. http://www.dumondchemicals.com/html/peelaway.htm Steve s/v Summer Love SM 340 ________________________________ From: Horst Pause <horst.puddleduck@...> To: amelyachtowners@... They leave from Hampton Va, on the 2nd of Nov. Well organized with weather routing etc. I wouldn't leave the Chesapeake before the first week in Nov.{ think hurricane.} Going to Savannah is good because they don't get hurricanes, but you are going west when you want to go east. The Gentlemens guide is a wonderful book, I have read it twice. He's a great writer. I'm going to the States for a shoulder opperation this week so will have plenty of time to talk while recovering. I've done a few 3-5 day offshore trips across the Gulf and up the coast, but haven't tackled the trip South yet. From what I've read a lot of people sail out to Bermuda, then South toavoid the upwind beat from the Bahamas down the chain, but I still don't have my SSB working (or have a good way to get weather that far offshore) I'm working on that, but haven't had much luck yet. I have a week in Oct that I could take her down to Savannah, then a month from mid Nov to mid Dec. I've ordered the book "A Gentleman's Guide to Passages South", but wanted some advice from folks who've been there and done that. Just how "bad" are the two approaches to getting to the BVI from the E Coast? Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Great observation and pictures Bill. The topics, especially the S.E. Asian ones I know so well, are better than any petri dish or laboratory incubator for making things grow.

I have heard all of the hype regarding Coppercoat, but want to caution you regarding the tropics. Although my evidence and conclusion are not scientific, I happen to be in a situation where a reasonable conclusion can be made that Coppercoat does not perform well in the tropics. We arrived in Malaysia near the equator in Nov 2009. A catamaran arrived about the same time. We each had antifouling done in April 2009...us in New Zealand with Micron66, the cat in Australia with Coppercoat. We have each not moved since we are both doing land travels in Asia. The cat has about 1" of thick marine growth including barnacles. We have a slight scum film. Do you know if the Coppercoat works in the Caribbean. We are seriousely considering this option. We met a person in St Lucia who was having it removed as he said it didn't work in the Caribbean and he had it put on in the states. Does anyone have experience with this product or CUPTONE that they market in Grenada? Paul LaFrance SV NOMAD To: amelyachtowners@... From: horst.puddleduck@... My 1989 SM hull #6 is currently in the boatyard having the rigging replaced.
I can ask boatyard for details if that helps. Bob s/v Minaxi From: amelyachtowners@... Re: [Amel] 8 HP OUTBOARD ENGINE
Horst Pause <horst.puddleduck@...>
Hi Bob,
First hoist the mizzen boom end with its topping lift. Then I open the fasteners of the motor on the wooden board and attach the lower block to the top of the engine. Now take the free end of the sheet down to the dinghy, lift the motor and swing it out. Lower it to the dinghy transom and close the fasteners. Re-do the mizzen now or wait until you lift the motor back up again. Horst ________________________________ From: rossirossix4 <rossidesigngroup@...> To: amelyachtowners@... Hi Vicente
In any conditions your 4 stroke is a heavy engine to handle even with a second person. Would you consider a second option. We have a small Susuki 2 stroke engine as back up and it is much lighter and easier for one person to handle. We have a 3.10 meter dingy and the 2 stroke pushes it along just fine. Horst Pause <horst.puddleduck@...>
I have always lowered my outboard on my own. I undo the mizzen sheet at the traveller and lower the motor with that, controlling the mizzen sheet from the dinghy. Very easy, and it even works in a bit of a roll. Horst
