Hi all
We found the problem to be the circuit board in the wiring junction box attached to the course computer. Over time (ours is a 1992 Santorin) the metal circuit strips decayed and developed hair line cracks, this in turn caused intermittent problems with the auto pilot, namely o switch itself of or loose course. 3 years ago,after checking everything else, one of our club members, an electronics wiz, found the problems with the circuit board, removed it and replaced itwith a new board. There have been no problems since,and thats despite some serious cruising from Norway to Spain from our base in Dublin

Richard, I have 24v going into the computer terminal but nothing coming out
to the motor.I figure the computer is responsible for making this happen,(
electric to flow out the other terminals to the motor.) I could send it
off to Ray Marine, but I suppose they would charge a fortune to fix it or
more likely tell me to replace it.

connections. The autohelm is still displaying a low battery message.I fear

The solution we have used on all three Amels we have owned--Sharki, Maramu and SM--was passed on to us 20 years ago by a very particular Swiss lady owner. Where the pipes from the galley and forward shower enter the sump we added stainless tubes about 3 inches long. This enables us to put the foot of a nylon stocking over these pipes and the nylon acts as a very fine sieve, catching everything except water. This helps hugely in keeping the smell of the bilge down though we still give the bilge a good clean out with a hose every so often. Ian and Judy, Pen Azen, SM 302 Hamble .

I spent some time in the "large and very nice yacht" business. With that point of view, what Amel does with gray water is quite normal unless you have the option of a treatment system. Another point of view favorable to the Amel system for gray water is minimizing the number of thru-hulls.

Frankly, I have great admiration for the approach that Amel has taken with gray water and tell myself this over-and-over every time I clean the sump to freshen things up...this helps my point of view.

This may seem bizarre but its true. Even though we religiously prevented ANY food material (using paper towels to wipe out food and milk residues, we had some odor problems in previous seasons. However, during the last 2 seasons we have eliminated another source with impressive results--HAIR. Yes hair. Nothing smells worse than even extremely small amounts of hair in the bilge. I know this sounds far fetched but it made all the difference--for those of you with XY chromosomes, when you shave your beards, wipe the hair and shaving cream off you face with a paper towel and throw it in the trash. Those of you with XX chromosomes, do the same with leg and underarm hair. While the plastic mesh catches longer hairs, shorter ones pass right through into the bilge with devastating olfactory results.

I received a reply from a friend, Dave Wallace, who also owns a Maramu and he told me on his boat, the galley sinks drain out a through-hull in the lazarette. Seems like they changed that setup in the SM.

I agree with the comment of not using bleach. Over time, it can wreck the pick up hoses as happened to another friend's boat.

Interesting comment about hair....

drying out and make sure it works.

I'd be interested if anyone else has another solution to the grey water
smells. I have thoroughly cleaned the bilge last Fall, but it didn't
really change the odor issue.

Hi Tom & Kirstin:

I am an certified aircraft mechanic (among other things) and we deal with plexiglass
a lot as most aircraft windows are plexiglass. You don't post whether the scratches
are on the surface of within the substance of the material but there is a difference.

In my experience the majority of the scratches we have on our Amel SM2000 Hull #
335 are surface scratches. These arose when we left our boat in Antigua with the
Amel supplied window cover on and the Montserrat volcano spread ash over the area.
The abrasive ash got between the cover and the plexiglass and as the cover flapped
in the breeze it upbraided the window. Those types of scratches can be polished
out. Hand polishing is best. You can go online to www.aircraftspruce.com and search
for a "micromesh" kit. It comes with all the components needed to treat a couple of
windows, but be prepared to spend hours and hours doing this. If you use power
tools to do this you need to use lots of cooling water and low speeds so that heat
build up on the window won't distort the optics. We now place terri cloth covers
between the window and the window cover and that has mitigated the entrance of
dirt and abrasive grit when the boat is stored.

More common than the above is what is called crazing. This can be on the surface
but is also deep within the matrix of the plexiglass. It first appears as small
spicules or pin point dots that are seen when the sunlight strikes the window at
a particular angle. It can then over time progress to long scratch like appearing
"craze" marks within the plexiglass. It seem nobody really knows why this occurs
but it is thought to be induced by heat, stress, and UV and is probably some sort
of crystaline change in the molecular structure of the plexiglass. The only cure
for bad crazing is replacement as it is deep within the matrix of the plexiglass
and no amount of polishing will work. Preventive measures include keeping the heat
down (i.e. covering the window with airspace between so that there isn't heat
build up in the window) , minimizing stresses (not stepping on the windows and
avoinding rogue waves from crashing upon them) , and shielding the window
from UV (i.e. using a cover when the boat isn't being used. All of those things
are hard to do on boats and airplanes. So we just resign ourselves to replacing
those windows periodically. Fortunately the boat windows are cheap compared
to the airplane windows. My last set of aircraft windows (2) cost me around
$15,000.

Lastly, there are special techniques for cutting and drilling plexiglass and I
would agree that you can do your own for relatively little money. I think if
you do some searching on the internet you will find the necessary skills. If
not call Aircraft Spruce and ask for their instructions on doing it.

Another method, for rather small patches, is to use toothpaste (no joke). It
contains a mild abrasive, to avoid scratching one's tooth enamel, and does
the job quite well. Obviously it turns out to be quite expensive on large
surfaces.

that is to use Brasso metal polish.There are polishing compounds on sale for
the purpose, but I hear it is used in a certain yard in La Rochelle. It
comes in liquid form and has a very mild abrassive compound. Try it on a
corner of the plexiglass and see if it helps. There is one drawback, you
have to supply the elbow grease.

Hi All, We have a 1982 vintage Mango wich had the same system. I'm quite surprised to find out that such a prestigious yacht as the Super Maramu still uses this system. The previous owner of our boat was a ship builder as was so revolted at the thought of grey water in  the bilge that he made the forward shower with a watertight sump and it's own special pump and float switch. I think its teed into the head outlet. The sink doesn't drain into the bilge either as I have never heard the pump go off when the plug is pulled. Richard, I have 24v going into the computer terminal but nothing coming out
to the motor.I figure the computer is responsible for making this happen,(
