Re: [Amel] Amel Orange Boot Stripe and corrosion in engine room

Danny and Yvonne SIMMS

Hi all, we too have the low stern. Knowing Amel do nothing without good reason and they build this model for many years without changing the waterline I wondered if they expected more ground tackle weight in the anchor locker than most of us have or more heavy items stored in the bow lockers?.
Corrosion in the engine room. A friend with a SM asked me how come my engine room is so free of corrosion and rust and his was so bad. The answer is WD40 or in NZ, CRC 556
Spray it regularly and liberally over just about every thing including alternators and electric motors. Makes a huge difference.

Refrigerator

Jose Venegas

After a very long winter without use, I tried tu turn my refrigerator yesterday and the compressor failed to start. It was working fine last year but this time all it does is to generate a humming sound withut any cooling. I left if over one hour on and the compressor gets warm but the refrigerator still does not get cool. Although the thermostat seems to work (hear the click at one point), I tried bypassing the thermostat at the box with no results.

My bateries are fully charged and I tried also turning on the engine (incresing the voltage to 28V) but that did not work either

Has anyone had this problem, and if so, what is the solution?

Also, I noted a switch and a red light that does not turn on below the refrigerator. What is it for?

I tried turning the refrigerator on with the switch in both positions with no results.

Any help and suggestions, including names of repairman or parts store in the US will be greatly appreciated.

Onan genset starting problems

Jeffrey Rapp <rapp.jeffrey@...>

I had the same problem on "Antares".
I cleaned all the connections several times, although perhaps not the main
engine ground, as the engine always started right up.
I found a voltage drop from the starting battery to the genset positive
terminal. I never could find exactly where the short was, so I disconnected
the cables from the starting battery to the genset, installed a second
battery and box near the genset, and it has worked fine ever since.
One caveat: a certain yacht broker well known to this forum advised
(probably rightly) that to be professional, the installation needed a cutoff
switch.

Re: Amel Orange Boot Stripe

svsummerlove <svsummerlove@...>

I've noticed the same thing. At first, I thought it was due to my inability to balance all the stuff I seem to think I have to carry around. I've been checking every SM I've seen for the last several years, and haven't found one yet that rides with the boot stripe parallel to the water (at least those that haven't been repainted). On all the SM's I've seen, the boot stripe at the bow is always 8" - 10" out of the water, and at the stern is right at the water or immersed. The only difference between lightly laden boats and heavily boats is how high they ride, not the angle they ride at. They all seem to list slightly to port as well.

Even if I moved everything portable from the aft cabin to the forward cabin, there wouldn't be enough weight to make much difference. I just assumed, as with most things "Amel", they had a good reason for it.

1. Does anyone know if the boot stripe of a completely empty SM, rides in the same manner?

2. Has anyone been able to load their SM so the boot stripe rides parallel to the water? If so, how was that accomplished?

3. Does anyone know if there is an intended reason why Amel painted the boot stripe so that it doesn't ride parallel to the water?

Thanks,
Steve

Onan Genset starting problems

Judy and Bill aboard SV BeBe <yahoogroups@...>

Several owners I know have talked about mysterious starting problems with the Onan.

I have solved this mystery as far as BeBe is concerned. The problem was on the negative side of the starting circuit. I found several connectors that needed cleaning and coating with CorrosionX.

I documented the particular connectors that caused my problems and have uploaded a jpg file which has photos and details the process I followed...it was a very simple task...hardest part was bending over the top of the Onan to get to the problem areas...took about 30 minutes, start to finish.

I placed the photo in album "Onan MDKVA." You should be able to see it by following this link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amelyachtowners/photos/album/1489622282/pic/1803735114/view?picmode=large&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&dir=asc

Last year, we scanned the manuals for all the systems, including the
Amel documents and schematics and posted a link to an external site
where others could download them. I don't know if anyone did and the
site I put them doesn't exist anymore. Let me know if there is
interest and I can find another place to host the files. We put all
the manuals on our laptops and ipad and have found it quite handy to
always have them available. The total scans were about 500MB and we
only scanned English when there were multiple languages.

COMMENT ABOUT THE FILES SECTION OF THIS WEBSITE:
If the Moderator/Owner and/or the author of a files upload can delete what they feel is unnecessary files from the FILES section of this website, we could make some room for some others. Currently Yahoo allows only 100MB for FILES and we are at 97% of capacity.

The PHOTOS section allows us 100GB and we are less than 1/2% of capacity in PHOTOS.

Yahoo only allows either the Group Moderator/Owner or the individual (author) that posted the file to delete the file. I have noticed that there are some unnecessary files that were posted by members who are not even currently active, so it will take the Group Moderator/Owner to act on those.

Best,

I have a PDF file of the complete manual for a SM2000 which is
17,200k...fairly large file. Unfortunately, it is too large to add
to the files section of this website which is almost full. This has
the ballooner instructions as well as everything else for a SM2000.

If you have a good Internet connection, I can email it to you if you
will post or send me your complete email address in this format:
bill"at"svbebe.com

I do not have a great Internet connection, and believe I can only get
this out one time...anybody else want a CC, let me know.

I met Mauro, very friendly and clever! He is going to revise all gear boxes next couple of weeks. Also, I asked him to take measures also for a bimini very simple: his son has a workshop to work SS pipes for the frame. They really do everything, including electronics.
Also, we went down to the engine room to check propeller gearbox oil: according to his opinion, oil is perfect, and thi means that gaskets are OK. Paolo, the yard mechanics, the one I asked to make the job, has the same opinion. So I'll keep the brass ring for spare.
I attach shots of oil reservoire and propeller, for your opinion.

Does anyone know if Amel created manuals like these for the older Maramu's?   It sounds more complete then what I have found on my 1985 vessel.

Thanks, Bob

Hi Danny,

The standard Amel manual is one of the documents we scanned. We were also provided by the previous owner with binders containing owners manuals and documentation for the other systems. Among those were a number of Amel engineering diagrams which we scanned, a handful per file. I do not believe these are at all comprehensive but they may be helpful for you.

I will find a new place to post the collection so others can download it.

Last year, we scanned the manuals for all the systems, including the Amel documents and schematics and posted a link to an external site where others could download them. I don't know if anyone did and the site I put them doesn't exist anymore. Let me know if there is interest and I can find another place to host the files. We put all the manuals on our laptops and ipad and have found it quite handy to always have them available. The total scans were about 500MB and we only scanned English when there were multiple languages.

Best,

Bill

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has access to the Amel
manuals for a SM 1993 or newer which gives instructions on setting up
the Ballooner sails.
