[Amel] Re: SM 93 Ballooner sails & Amel Electronic Manual

I've posted a link to a ZIP file containing scans for just about all the documents that came with our SM2K # 331. Look under the Links folder for the Amel group for "Amel SM2K Scanned Manuals", or use the link below.

Obviously, some of these are specific to our boat but many should be common to similar hulls. When the same information was available in multiple languages, we only scanned the English version. Given the Yahoo Groups space limitations, I've posted this under a separate service. Let me know if you have any problems downloading the file. You can reach me directly at markghayden _AT_ yahoo.com As I said in an earlier email, these are quite handy to have on your laptop and we have found them useful to put on our iPad via the iBooks app. Just go to iTunes, select File -> Add to Library for each folder. Hi Eric,

We recently replaced the elbows on both our Yanmar and Onan. I believe for the Yanmar it was the 3rd replacement after 9 years, similar as you. We were told by several sources the combination of heat + salt water + diesel exhaust is extremely corrosive. We ended up going with the Yanmar elbow (NZ$700 after initial quotes of NZ$1400). However, one of the steel fabricators we talked with in the interim had proposed adding a ceramic lining to prevent/decrease the corrosion. We did not follow that path, but perhaps it is worth trying. regards, Mark

We bought a new elbow in Phuket with about 2,500 hours and about 8 years old. I also had the original elbow repaired by a TIG welder and carry it as a spare. I talked to several people that told me that the TIG welding would make it as good as new, but we were facing about 5,000 miles through the Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden and Red Sea without much in terms of replacement parts. If I were you I would take the elbow to a good TIG welder in St. Martin for repair, then keep an eye on it after reinstalling it. Better yet, if you kept the first one, have both of them TIG welded and keep one as a spare. I wish I could find 3M™ Extreme Sealing Tape 4412N, or something similar for emergency repair of such things. Bill BeBe, SM2k, #387 Currently Marmaris, Turkey

In the normal loading for ocean work all the Amel seem to need the water line raised seems the Capt wanted the "sales" appearance to be more dynamic. We too collected an marine forest on the waterline and stern. Grant when healed over cross for days you will get growth on the leeward side as it is under water.

The engine is 9 years old. That seems a very short period for a component to last. Corrosion in the engine room. A friend with a SM asked me how come my engine room is so free of corrosion and rust and his was so bad. The answer is WD40 or in NZ, CRC 556 Spray it regularly and liberally over just about every thing including alternators and electric motors. Makes a huge difference. I took a look at the Amel 54 in my marina in St Martin. The way the stanchions and other gear on the stern of the boat is configured, I guess you would have to add stern attachments to the side of the boat as the bridles would interfere with almost everything on the stern. Onan genset starting problems
Jeffrey Rapp <rapp.jeffrey@...>
I had the same problem on "Antares".
I cleaned all the connections several times, although perhaps not the main engine ground, as the engine always started right up. I found a voltage drop from the starting battery to the genset positive terminal. I never could find exactly where the short was, so I disconnected the cables from the starting battery to the genset, installed a second battery and box near the genset, and it has worked fine ever since. One caveat: a certain yacht broker well known to this forum advised (probably rightly) that to be professional, the installation needed a cutoff switch. Even if I moved everything portable from the aft cabin to the forward cabin, there wouldn't be enough weight to make much difference. I just assumed, as with most things "Amel", they had a good reason for it. 1. Does anyone know if the boot stripe of a completely empty SM, rides in the same manner? 2. Has anyone been able to load their SM so the boot stripe rides parallel to the water? If so, how was that accomplished? 3. Does anyone know if there is an intended reason why Amel painted the boot stripe so that it doesn't ride parallel to the water? Thanks, Steve SM340 Summer Love
