Bill,
Well done finding the replacement batteries. Strangely Varta UK stated that that particular battery configuration was manufactured by Delphi and that Varta did not continue production when they took over. Hey ho, I must have been speaking to the wrong people! I have to say that I believe you can find anything for a yacht or probably a ship if you are in Piraeus, my experience has been absolutely second to non when I have been there. Two days ago in Piraeus, Greece we bought 13 Varta (A25) 12 volt 105 amp/hour batteries for BeBe #387.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
These batteries have 3/8" bolt lugs that are in exactly the same location as the original Delphi Freedom batteries installed by Amel when BeBe was new. The case is exactly the same size in L x W x H. I was told that they were made by Varta in the plant previously owned by Delphi. When Delphi closed Varta acquired the plant and some other entity acquired the Delphi brand, or so I was told. I paid 165.38 Euro each, or 2,150 Euro for 13 of these batteries including VAT, delivery, installation, and removal of the old batteries. If you are coming to the Athens area contact Bobby at Elka, phone +30210 42 03 153, email elka"at"elka.com.gr. Tell Bobby that you are interested in exactly the same batteries that he delivered to BeBe at Zea Marina. Best, Bill BeBe, SM2k, #387 Currently Greece

The batteries you would like to replace (old Delphi) are the new Varta Hobby 12 V 105 AH Pol 8 Connection 3/8 " 15 mm high Varta Code: 811 054 057 These are the batteries Amel puts in all SM (Delphi) renamed now Varta Hobby 12 V Varta is now a subsidary of US Company Johnson Controls but the manufacturing plant is the same in Europe. I mixed 6 Delphi batteries with 4 new Varta Hobby with out any problem. I know dont do that; replace all batteries at the same time, but it is the same fabrication spec. The price here in Turkey was extremly cheap. 280 TL. In Italy you shoud get them for approx. 200 Euro regards Hanspeter SM 16 , Krusadasi , Turkey ----Ursprüngliche Nachricht---- Von: grahamjohnston42@... Arca di Noè
Salve Lorenzo,
Outhaul gearbox and battery replacement
John Hollamby <annejohnholl@...>
The outhaul gearboxes are industrial qulity and designed to run continuously. In use for outhauling they only run for perhaps five minutes a day.The only part likely to wear is the bronze drive gear wheel and this is available from Amel for 200 euros plus carriage. When mine were stripped down after ten years use the wheel on the in-mast furling was perfect but the outhaul one was pretty badly worn apparently because it had been fitted the wrong way round originally thus putting the wear off centre.
Varta batteries are made in Germany and of high quality, many other brands come from the Far East and may not be so good. I believe that Winner is made in Taiwan. Fittings are readily available to convert battery posts to bolt on type. Anne and John, Bali Hai, SM319

Yesterday I bought 13 of the Varta 105 amp/hr (A25) batteries. I was told that Varta (very good brand in EU) purchased the French Delphi plant about 2006 and another company bought the Delphi brand name...not sure if this is correct, but it is what I was told.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
The Varta 105 amp/hr (A25) has exactly the same case and dimensions as the Delphi Freedom battery installed by Amel on our 2003 Super Maramu. Everything fits perfectly including the copper connection straps. Best, Bill BeBe, SM2k #387 Currently Athens, Greece

Re: [Amel] Re: Amel Drive Seals leaking
Thanks Mike. I guess the Amel drive must be pretty bullet proof. I now have a ss wearing ring but will keep it0for a spare and go with the majority opinion and use bronze. Just hoping the new seals will last longer than a few months this time. It was odd finding no springs in the seals as I know they were there at installation. Can only guess they were NOT ss and rusted completely away when water intruded.
