Bill,
Well done finding the replacement batteries. Strangely Varta UK stated that that particular battery configuration was manufactured by Delphi and that Varta did not continue production when they took over. Hey ho, I must have been speaking to the wrong people!

I have to say that I believe you can find anything for a yacht or probably a ship if you are in Piraeus, my experience has been absolutely second to non when I have been there.

I just added the Varta Battery cut sheet with specifications to the Photo Section in a new album titled "Batteries."

You should be able to follow this link to the specifications page: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amelyachtowners/photos/album/701052503/pic/1634801095/view?picmode=original&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&dir=asc

The A25 is the exact replacement for the Delphi Freedom battery installed by Amel.

Be sure to select "Original" view to enlarge the page.

These batteries have 3/8" bolt lugs that are in exactly the same location as the original Delphi Freedom batteries installed by Amel when BeBe was new. The case is exactly the same size in L x W x H. I was told that they were made by Varta in the plant previously owned by Delphi. When Delphi closed Varta acquired the plant and some other entity acquired the Delphi brand, or so I was told.

I paid 165.38 Euro each, or 2,150 Euro for 13 of these batteries including VAT, delivery, installation, and removal of the old batteries.

If you are coming to the Athens area contact Bobby at Elka, phone +30210 42 03 153, email elka"at"elka.com.gr. Tell Bobby that you are interested in exactly the same batteries that he delivered to BeBe at Zea Marina.

Hi Lorenzo,
If it is of any help to you the Delphi batteries were
manufactured under license in the EU by Varta and marketed by Numax and Vetus under their own brands. They are no
longer made by Varta.
Â
Here in the UK Numax stock a similar battey: XV31MF Terminal 1 DT  which I think has both
taper and screw terminals but you would need to check if they are suitable as the terminal layout on out Delphi
batteries on our Sharki are Type 2. I think I will be able to re-drill the copper connecting bar to fit and use these
batteries when our existing ones fail.

it is to find them. The best is to visit a store like perhaps a Giant or large automotive truck supply house. These are
big batteries with a weight of 30 kg each. DO NOT GET SMALLER BATTERIES. best may be to have a store order a full set

Arca di Noè

Salve Lorenzo,

Buona ricerca!

Hi Lorenzo,
If it is of any help to you the Delphi batteries were manufactured under
license in the EU by Varta and marketed by Numax and Vetus under their own
brands. They are no longer made by Varta.

Here in the UK Numax stock a similar battey: XV31MF Terminal 1 DT which
I think has both taper and screw terminals but you would need to check if
they are suitable as the terminal layout on out Delphi batteries on our
Sharki are Type 2. I think I will be able to re-drill the copper connecting
bar to fit and use these batteries when our existing ones fail.

If they are suitable perhaps there is an Italian distributor.

Good luck,

Having had to search for large group 31 batteries in Europe I know how hard
it is to find them. The best is to visit a store like perhaps a Giant or
large automotive truck supply house. These are big batteries with a weight
of 30 kg each. DO NOT GET SMALLER BATTERIES. best may be to have a store
order a full set so they are fresh and the same age.

Outhaul gearbox and battery replacement

John Hollamby <annejohnholl@...>

The outhaul gearboxes are industrial qulity and designed to run continuously. In use for outhauling they only run for perhaps five minutes a day.The only part likely to wear is the bronze drive gear wheel and this is available from Amel for 200 euros plus carriage. When mine were stripped down after ten years use the wheel on the in-mast furling was perfect but the outhaul one was pretty badly worn apparently because it had been fitted the wrong way round originally thus putting the wear off centre.
Varta batteries are made in Germany and of high quality, many other brands come from the Far East and may not be so good. I believe that Winner is made in Taiwan. Fittings are readily available to convert battery posts to bolt on type.

Yesterday I bought 13 of the Varta 105 amp/hr (A25) batteries. I was told that Varta (very good brand in EU) purchased the French Delphi plant about 2006 and another company bought the Delphi brand name...not sure if this is correct, but it is what I was told.

The Varta 105 amp/hr (A25) has exactly the same case and dimensions as the Delphi Freedom battery installed by Amel on our 2003 Super Maramu. Everything fits perfectly including the copper connection straps.

I finally reached someone in the US who is responsive and appears to be able
to source the gearbox. I haven't actually ordered yet as we are overseas and
need to figure out timing etc.

Mark,

The gearbox is available. Pricing is $521 ea. FCA Charleston, SC and
delivery time is about 8 weeks.

The product would be available from the factory in France in 4 weeks if you
wanted to air freight the item. It normally costs about $3.50 per kg.

If you want to proceed with an order, I can put you in touch with one of our
distributors.

Eric and all,

The Leroy Somer gear reduction gearbox is part number 102014. It can
be
ordered from Leroy Somer at the US phone 731-967-3000. I got this
information from gears-usa"at"leroy-somer.com. They told me via email
that
it was available.

I have not called the number for a price because I am in Greece now.
Let

It seems like quite a few people are tackling the problems servicing
their
outhaul gearboxes. I happened to notice the other day that the top
lip
seal
was shot on mine and started on a two day project to disassemble the
gearbox.

I tried just about everything to get the inner shaft removed, except
"getting medieval with a sledge hammer" as one of the other owners
demonstrated. After bending several 8mm steel brackets and breaking
my
puller tool, we finally succeeded with a 20mm thick steal bracket
that
was
fabricated for the purpose. The nice thing about the approach that
finally
succeeded for us was that all the force was placed on the outer
shaft of
the
gearbox, none on the boom or the other components of the gearbox.
I'll
post
a picture when I have a chance.

I found the model information posted by one of the other owners
here:

Manufacturer: LS Leroy Somer
Made in France
6015 Angoulene
Reducteur N 0256889
Type MVA M33C
Rduction 1/60

I have not been able to reach Leroy Somer via their contact page.
Can
anyone
recommend a reliable and inexpensive source to order the gearbox or
parts
from? Any pricing info?

One other question: it seems that the outhaul gearbox causes more
problems
than the main sail furling gearbox. Is that right? Is the latter
just
less
exposed to the elements?

thanks, Mark

Thanks Mike. I guess the Amel drive must be pretty bullet proof. I now have a ss wearing ring but will keep it0for a spare and go with the majority opinion and use bronze. Just hoping the new seals will last longer than a few months this time. It was odd finding no springs in the seals as I know they were there at installation. Can only guess they were NOT ss and rusted completely away when water intruded.
Steady as she goes.
