Re: Mainsail Euros 41

As a sailmaker, I've seen people buy used sails with varying amounts of success. If you happen to get a response from a Euro owner, consider yourself very fortunate. It is going to be quite challenging to find a suitable sail on the secondary market.

Here's why. The Euros is a cruising boat with a modestly sized rig. A used sail to fit your boat will most likely have been built for a smaller and lighter craft. Thus it will have cloth that is too light for your purposes and other construction details are inadequate. As an example, we own a Maramu. The main on our boat is smaller than the mainsail on many boats that are under 40' and weigh half as much as we do.

Then you run into the real reason this is likely to be an unfulfilled quest. Few if any cruisers sell sails that are still in good serviceable condition. Most of the cruising sails we replace should have been replaced years ago. Racers will often sell sails that are still serviceable. However your mainsail isn't much larger than the mainsail on a J-27 that weighs 3800 lbs (1724 kg) so it would be a very short-lived solution at best.

Sails are your engine and in my opinion are not what you want to take shortcuts with. I've seen many boats with first rate electronics and other gadgets but poor sails. This past cruising season a boat went on a reef in Australia because their mainsail shredded while they were trying to sail out of harms way.

I've checked out databases for rig dimensions for the Euros but we don't have it listed. I am happy to send you a measurement worksheet and instructions on how to measure your rig. One issue you are likely to encounter is that the tack setback may not be compatible and the tack attachment will be klugey. Similar problems may be encountered with the clew attachment if you have an outhaul car. Then there's the issue of luff hardware. You may need to web on new hardware or pay a sailmaker to do it. If the used sail has nylon slides that have been in use for more than 5 years, they should be replaced with new slides. Use Alsplip or PTFE coated stainless slides at the headboard and where any full battens attach.

If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me off-list.

Dave Benjamin

Would anybody be interested in an Amel Yacht Rendezvous in the British
Virgin Islands in March?

It would be the perfect opportunity for owners of Amel Yachts to participate
in an exclusive Amel event. We could have fun 'races' from one overnight
anchorage to the next that everyone could enjoy. The setting of the British
Virgin Islands are a stunningly beautiful backdrop for this event.

This would be the ideal venue for Amel owners to meet, exchange ideas,
information and adventures. We would be able to view modifications many of
us have made to our yachts first hand, as well as being able to put a face
to the names that we see on the website.

I would love to get an Amel representative to participate, as this would be
a great opportunity for question and answer sessions, (a great takeaway for
Amel in developing their yachts) advise on industry advancements and
challenges as well as the opportunity to get to know the owners of one of
the finest cruising yachts in the world.

If anyone is interested in this, please let me know, as we live in Puerto
Rico, it would be easy for us to start the wheels turning on locations,
registrations and pricing.

Many boats have a better galley layout than our old Maramu's. Amel certainly recognized that when they developed the Super Maramu. It's one of the few drawbacks of the Maramu. I am fine with the mast being deck stepped. In some regards it's better. If we were dismasted there would be no chance of the mast wreaking havoc below and compromising the integrity of the hull.

There is no truth to any statement in this yachts listing saying it is in

any way related to an Amel. The yard that built it was a small French

shipyard that built a limited number of rather high quality cruising

sailboats of which I sold a few on the brokerage market in the 1980's. I

showed one of these to George Day, the past editor of Cruising World now

the editor of Blue Water Sailing, many years ago before he took his family

on a circumnavigation. They eventually selected a Mason 43' for their voyage

but George was impressed with the strength and attention to detail that was

very evident. I believe that perhaps the yards name is spelled incorrectly

in this listing and any reference to this having any relation to the Amel

Shipyard simply is not true in any way.

Sweet boat but NOT an Amel.

Interesting how the brokers description of the 54 says it's the only late model 54 for sale in the US. Unless Joel Potter sold Hollis, which has been on the market for some time, I think they might want to revise the ad. Leading off like that probably doesn't help the prospects of getting the boat sold.

HI Bill, we had an Eberspacher heater on our old 46 Amel. The duct
work;
exiting from the heater was metal pipe with a TEE to direct air
forward and
aft,
that was connected to flex pipe to the cabins, take care that you use
non
flammable pipe, was run to all cabins along the port side each with a
duct
that
could be somewhat closed. Starting with the installation:
The heater was mounted in a pan in the port side combing with a vent
for
fresh
air. Fuel is delivered by a small 12 volt pump and a small filter.
There are

two parts to the exhaust; one is double wall pipe that exits high up
on the
port
side with a special fitting in the free board to protects the
fiberglass.
two
there is a moisture pipe that takes care of condensation in the
process.
Amel
mounted a thermostat in galley on the port side that ran the unit
There was
also a hi/lo switch to control the fan. While these are great units
but
given
you have the Climma and a gen set why not run the gen set and heat the
cabins,
run the water maker and charge the batteries all at the same time?. It
just
seems that adding the cost and having a major installation to you boat
adds
very
little in terms of comfort. Also keep in mind that the exhaust in a
harbor
can
be an issue with CO and smell. Then if you are along side another boat
take
care to the heat that comes out of the exhaust as well.. Fender can be
fried

with great ease.

Good luck in your decision process.

I am considering adding an Eberspacher Diesel heater to this which is
what I

I could use some help with planning this and I have a few questions:

installation?

2.) Assuming it is correct, does anyone know if the Eberspacher heater
is a

3.) Where does Amel install the heater controls?

4.) Can anyone provide me with photos of the installation inside the

Re: [Amel] Bilge Pump Deal

Hi,
Just to add my two cents worth - -
We have just purchased the Whale Gulper 320 (not installed yet).
We are replaced the original diaphram pump with the Jabso Macerator  18590 which proved really useless - my hair jams it - even though we use good filters in the bathroom to no avail - also any fluff seems to intertwine with my hair and the whole pump had to be disassambled/reassembled to get it going again -(turning the top screw with a screwdriver did not release it)  - hopeful that the Whale which is a diaphram pump will  be a lot better than the Jabso.

ActiveCaptain has a link (changes each week) for either a 12v or 24 v diaphragm pump--Whale Gulper 320--that is a good replacement for the diaphram bilge pumps that we use--http://www.defender.com/activecaptain.jsp The discount code is A38 and brings the price down from $185 to $150. (Or search for Whale Gulper 320 at Defender and enter the A38 code. The head can be rotated and clamped to suck and discharge vertically) and fits as a replacement with minimal modification. http://www.whalepumps.com/marine/product_list/13/137/ http://www.whalepumps.com/documents/cmcc_cok_gulper320_insert_8sept08.pdf Will self prime and lift 3 meters, discharge 3m and pump 4-5 gallons a minute. Has a 1"/25mm barb. 10amp@ 12v or 5 amp@24 volt. Whale 220 gulper is also available with less capacity and amp draw.

Others have used a Jabsco self priming macerator pump 18590-2092 (12 v) or 18590-2094 (24v) which is also a possibility.
