Gary,

Pat and I are in Annapolis for the Sailboat Show. We boarded lots of boats at the show today, the Oyster, Passport, Hylas etc and then I said let's go see the 54 Amel which was a 2 second walk from the show. We spoke to the broker who gave us permission to board. The boat is immaculate and absolutely beautiful. Your boat just blew all those other high end yachts away. I walked off your boat and said, that it is the most beautiful boat in the show, and actually should be in the show. Nothing beats the Amel. They take your breath away. I really wish Amel would return to this show, their presence is missed.

I wanted to ask you if the boot stripe and rub rail color was something
custom you had done. The platinum color really changes the overall
appearance of the 54. I noticed that the 55 uses this color.

My Thoughts:
I am beginning to think that there may be some moisture in the line that
freezes causing an obstruction, or possibly some other material causing an
obstruction.

I am sure the control box turns the compressor OFF with high pressure or
high heat. I wish I knew if under this circumstance where the compressor is
turned OFF for high pressure or temp by the Control Module, and assuming
that the thermostat is closed (on), if the Control Module is programmed to
turn back on without a delay. The delay is important for the pressure to
reduce before the compressor turns back on.

started to hear ominous sounds during Genoa furling and rapidly added two
careful drilled and threaded two access ports to the gearbox. I used the
same thread as that of the access ports of the auto prop as I was going to
use the bronze screws that remained from a recent overhaul of the
propeller.
However, I thought it would be best to use nylon hardware to avoid any
possible electrolysis. Using the same grease gun I had for the prop, I
injected new grease into one port and allowed it to flow out on the other
while periodically running the gearbox until the color of the exiting
grease
was close to that of the one I was injecting.
Magically the ominous sound calmed down to an quiet purr and I believe the
life of this gearbox may have been saved.

I plan to post a couple of pix of the process as I get back to the boat.

Tips for Removing Masts

In preparation for our Atlantic Crossing next spring, I will be taking down the masts for inspection and PM. I have a couple of question:

1) what do you do with the radar and other long cables?
2) any special spots to look for deterioration?
3) Where can I find the mast paint in the USA?

Any other tips will be greatly appreciated.

If there is no glitch in the compressor, evidenced by a low high pressure, the other reason for the high differential pressure may be a contamination/obstruction of the capilary. In the old days, when refrigerant polution was not an issue and no vacuum pump was available, we used to discharge the system from the high side and refill it again from the low side- I beleive the current Danfoss BD 50 requires about 3.5 ounces of gas, so even with older compressors, it was rather inexpensive. The process was not only an attempt to eliminate particles which may have dislodged from inside the system's tubing wall but also a tiny amount of water which may have accumulated and freeze at the end of the capilary, thus blocking same.
 
Nowaday, the correct procedure is first securely empty the gas, then change the filter/dryer and vacuum the system for a few (or more) hours and then refill the sytem.

BTW I have changed my whole system (refrigerator and compressor) to which I have added sea water cooling, and , in the tropics, the efficiency is worth the expense...

Amel Euros 41 Stix

Hi,someone knows the Stix of Amel Euros 41?, and if can be considered a Bluewater?. I bought one, and the naval architect who is preparing the documentation for registered in Spain, tells me that his Stix is below 32 and can not be considered an offshore racing boat. It is a boat capable of crossing the Atlantic?. Thank you for your answers

Danny,

Thanks a lot for posting your method for adding grease to the gear boxes. I
started to hear ominous sounds during Genoa furling and rapidly added two
careful drilled and threaded two access ports to the gearbox. I used the
same thread as that of the access ports of the auto prop as I was going to
use the bronze screws that remained from a recent overhaul of the propeller.
However, I thought it would be best to use nylon hardware to avoid any
possible electrolysis. Using the same grease gun I had for the prop, I
injected new grease into one port and allowed it to flow out on the other
while periodically running the gearbox until the color of the exiting grease
was close to that of the one I was injecting.
Magically the ominous sound calmed down to an quiet purr and I believe the
life of this gearbox may have been saved.

I plan to post a couple of pix of the process as I get back to the boat.

We just left the EU and Med after 4.5 years.
The boat can stay 18 months, if not chartered, and used by non-EU.
After the boats 18 months is up you need to take it to a
non-EU country for a day and the clock starts over. We kept marina/fuel
receipts as proof that the boat was out of EU.

Americans (and perhaps all non-EU) can stay 180 days out of 360,
and then must stay out for 180 days, or any combinations thereof (90/90),
in the Schengen countries. Or get a visa, which we did not do.

We are Americans, living in France, with an American-flagged boat that has been here for over 3 years.  We established our residency here, and with that we were allowed to import our boat into the EU as part of personal effects, with no charges for VAT or customs duty.  The process is tricky, and you have to start it in the US with an application for a long-stay visa, but it is worth it if you have a US-flagged boat here.  We have been stopped 3 times so far by French, Spanish, and Irish customs boats that seemed to be quite interested when they saw the US flag.  They were polite, efficient, friendly, and quite dissapointed when I showed them the import documents and our resident cards, but they had no questions whatsoever about their validity.  Whole process takes about 30 minutes, done at sea or in a marina, depending on where they find you.

For non EU-residents, I believe that the 18 month rule applies to the boat, and the 90 day Schengen rule for people who do not have long-term visas.  Just getting the visas is not too difficult, but it does require a visit to a consulate in the US, in person, and providing proof of financial resources and health insurance coverage.  I also don't know how someone on a boat  would prove that they had a long-term place to stay in the EU, if the boat is not acceptable.  We have a house here, so that was not an issue.

For people who think this is a bit much, our friends here all complain about the process for visiting the US - same aggravation, high costs, and I think that foreign boats in the US have to call in whenever they move from one port to another, which would be a real pain for Chesapeake Bay cruisers, or someone just moving along the ICW.
