Thanks for your input. I did all that and looks like the Volvo ground solenoid has been removed or was never fitted. The -ve from the battery is connected to a stud on the starter motor. The

Find the big black negative cable from your start battery, it will come from the battery compartment with the big red positive cable, and follow it.
If the solenoid exists, that's where it will

I have searched long and hard following the complete 12v circuit looking for this solenoid. I have found one bolted to the front side of the control box on the Onan but nothing in the Vlvo circuit.

My Santorin, #68 from 1992, does indeed have the same upper swivel as the SM, with 3 slots in the furling extrusion; one for the genoa, one for the ballooner and one for the "mouse" to unlatch

The ground solenoid on my yanmar is near the high pressure pump. It has a black rubber button on top. Possibly the mechanic disturbed the wiring.

Bill thanks so much for your Input. Back to boat tomorrow with Nigel Calder's book to test solenoids. Still not sure if the Volvo engined boats have a ground solenoid in their starting circuit
