I think that I would try another 1/6 turn. The nut will be very tight when it is tight enough. My guess is that you did not have it tight enough, but I can't be sure because I am not

I had the same problem.. it is one of continuous wear on the packing and eventually it leaks; you are not alone and every SM eventually has this problem.

When you remove the nut, not much water will come in....maybe not more than now, but when you remove the three packings, that's when the water starts. In my experience, if you have

I used AMEL seals and the nut entered without any problem,
The leakage is from the 2 threads.

Sounds like your rudder gland packing job wasn't done well the last time.Yes it can be done in the water, but if your SM428 is like mine, 437, you can expect water to come through

It is quite possible to replace the packing made of 3 similar parts ("étoupe" in French,t hey are not called "seals") as long as you are stopped in a flat sea.
You need 3 lengths of 20cm (about 8")
