I would try a big alternator starter motor rebuild shop for the brushes.

A short piece of fuel line and some contact cement make good "caps" for those 'horns'.
Having experienced a halyard wrap up there once, I wouldn't consider running without them.

We also replaced an old motor about a year ago (it really was very un-repairable). Couple of things. Like you say, David, the replacement motors are a slightly smaller diameter. We used 3 rubber

Many ways to skin this cat. When this shaft seized in place on Aletes, we stacked cribbing under the gear box to the deck to spread out the load and used a hydraulic jack to push the shaft

When I ordered a new motor from AMEL 2 years ago, this is what I got.
Maud told me the original MBT86 was not available anymore. I only realised the new one was smaller diameter when it arrived.
