Hi Bill
Maybe Amel concluded the cockpit structure is not strong enough for support the main load forces particularly if the boom move quickly from one side to other.

Interesting observation.
I cant' give you a proper answer but using Yachtworld pictures I do notice this change happened around 2014, which I believe coincide with the mid-lifecycle update

I am fairly certain the fitting is the same fitting Dessalator uses which is JIC. The size is 3/8 inch. This is a common fitting.

Maybe I got lucky with the port I was in. Novigrad is only open during the season but I worked fine and I got the required permit to sail Croatian waters.
