Did you find the bolt? It is probably under the transmission. If it wored its way forward somehow it could be in the sump.

Bill Kinney sums this up perfectly and is a much better version than my typical response which is, "do not add battens to a SM or 54."

You are right about this being a contentious topic. When we replaced our mainsail we stayed with the unbattened version, as was original to the SM.
I think I can fairly summarize the arguments.

I second Nick's recommendation 100%. We used to have so many problems furling with our original 2008 DeMe material with integrated battens. Sometimes dangerous when reefing in strong winds.

Hi David I Have 54 #101 original Hydra Net no battens. When I finally replace the sails there will be No Battens. The main fills nicely. I can point with difficulty 38 to 40. Sails nicely at 50
