From what I see, if my jib car is adjusted properly the leech of the sail comes to the shroud at almost the same time as the foot. I don't have a single "best" position for the jib car, it moves back

There is having the outer seals facing the other way, but protecting the spring from seawater is not it.
Lip seals are designed to "pump" fluid as the shaft turns, from the "outside" to the "inside".

We've used the ballooner as a light air jib, but you do have to drop the genoa, making it not very user friendly. In our case we were doing a fun day race in light air on Long Island sound.
