Re: Watch out for this grounding issue
Bill Kinney
Alex,
The problems that were hard to sort out were different on the two boats. One had an Onan that was also new, and was installed with an unisolated ground. This left the 12 and 24 volt battery negatives connected. It was a complex set of tests to sort them out. In the other case it was an older boat without a MAS light. So tracking down any ground fault was a challenge Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Daytona, FL http://www.cruisingconsulting.com |

Re: StarLink on Amel 54

I think the T&Cs associated with ROAM now more specifically constrain the availability of the service to land.
Ref: Regional plans are geo-fenced to work on land within the same continent as the registered Shipping Address, while the Global plans work on land anywhere there is active service coverage.

Hello,
today as was checking Starlink web site and there is no RV version any more. Now is called STARLINK ROAM and it is written: "Immediately access high-speed, low-latency internet on an as-needed basis at any destination where Starlink provides https://www.starlink.com/map?source=rv. 75 €/mo with a one-time hardware cost of 450 €". And follows: The new Flat High Performance Starlink allows users to enjoy high-speed, low-latency internet while in motion. With a wide field of view and enhanced GPS capabilities, the Flat High Performance Starlink can connect to more satellites, allowing for consistent connectivity on the go. The hardware is designed for a permanent installation on your vehicle and is resilient in harsh environments. Currently available for order and use in select markets.
I might read it in a way that suits me but as I understand there is no limit to territory and it only limits it to ACTIVE COVERAGE ( when one clicks on active coverage it will open the page with world map). -- Slavko SM 2000 #279 Bonne Anse in Croatia |

Bill Kenney,
thanks for sharing this. I'll check that on my Beta 85T (but need to first buy new batteries for my multimeter Today...). Could you please also share what kind of "hard to track problems" the other owners faced? I have a load of problems with my Beta85T ever since it was installed in 2020, too much to share here and now, but will come back with the unsolved main problem. Thanks for your help! Re: Onan genset problem
The Governor, Actuator on the Onan MKAV is Part Number 306−5006−01 old#151-077. I carried one of these around the world as a spare because I decided it would be a critical failure part. I never needed it. On the MKAV this part is driven by the PCB. Earlier Onan models adjusted the throttle differently. I am not so sure I agree with the fuel issue that you describe with filters, and frankly I assumed that the owner checked for the simple things. He said it operates normally until warmed up. A diesel at normal operating temperature uses slightly less fuel than a cold diesel. I wonder if it is cold enough there to cause the fuel to gel inside the tank. Below about 5°C, diesel turns gelatinous. Bill

Re: Onan genset problem
Hi Eloi Nothing is impossible in Tierra del Fuego! In Ushuaia I replaced the Perkins of my Sharki with a Yanmar 54 hp and redid the whole engine room without any particular problems. Onan has an importer, Naval Motor in Buenos Aires and various technicians throughout the country. In Ushuaia there is Jorge Otamendi (Teté) who replaced my engine. He is an excellent mechanic and he treated me well even financially. As in all of Argentina, you don't have to be in a hurry, but the important thing is to understand what the problem is and then order a replacement. If it is available from the importer, it will arrive in Ushuaia in a couple of days with rapid transport. The address of Teté is as follows, but in the two yacht clubs everyone knows it. Re: Onan genset problem
RPM increase and decrease suggests a fuel side issue and a change of that filter (and any filter, like a racor, that may feed that) may be a first step before the PCB.

Re: Onan genset problem
It could be a lot of things. I suspect the governor actuator which is an electric actuator that opens the throttle as the load increases. But it could be the PCB. I think you need an Onan tech. Onan genset problem
Eloi Bamberg
Hello,
My Onan genset 7kv is starting normally, but when it comes to "normal" running temperature, it starts reeving up and down. I changed already the impeller and cleaned the water cooler. Any idea what could be the cause of this up and down reeving (with and/or without charge)? Thanks for any help/idea where to continue the search. Eloi, SM2k 426 Red Lion Puerto Williams |

Re: C drif shaft
I had a similar failure on Kristy ~10 yrs ago. The break was at the point where the shaft stepped down in size, probably due to a malalignment due to failed It was repaired in Fajardo Puerto Rico by welding an ~8 mm thick sleeve over the two broken halves of the shaft, which overlapped the broken halves by ~30mm on each side. The sleeve had to be machined to fit. It remained in place and worked fine for several years until I had to replace the CDrive because of electrolytic damage to the prop shaft. There are a few pics in the SM 243 folder. Feel free to contact me directly if you would like. Kent Now boatless prior owner SV Kristy. -- Kent & Iris KRISTY
