FW: [Amel Yacht Owners] Yahoo Amel Owners Group is shutting down today
Mucho kudo’s to Bill Rouse for making this happen.
Members are going to find the new group location much superior to anything Yahoo has to offer. The basic functions of embedding pictures or attaching files are as simple as putting in an email. Searching for files and pictures is much much better.
The new platform offers a nice clean screen with no Yahoo ads!!!!!
Look around. You are going to love it!!!!!
With best regards,
Mark

New Group
To: All members of the Amel Yacht Owners Group and New Members
In 2002, “Closereach” founded the Amel Yacht Owners Group on Yahoo Groups platform with a handful of members. Our group grew in membership to the hundreds when Closereach retired from our group and turned the group’s ownership over to Jose Luis Isasi. Jose led the group to over 1000 members and in 2018 turned the ownership over to me. In the beginning and through a number of years, the Yahoo platform worked well for most of our members. However, as technology progressed, Yahoo Groups did not, and many of the members began complaining of numerous shortcomings with the Yahoo platform. Additionally, Yahoo simply stopped supporting the groups about 2 years ago and left known bugs and problems continue to irritate all of us. Lastly, we cannot ignore the numerous rumors about Yahoo and what they may do with the Yahoo Groups, especially since they no longer support their group platform. Groups.io is a new and different platform for groups like ours. Although they offer a “free” group platform, it is not for us because we need more features and we are larger than the small groups the free platform is intended for. Groups.io has a PREMIUM platform which is generally designed like the Yahoo platform that we are accustomed to, but Groups.io has search ability that works, and many other tools that work. The Amel Owners Group moderators and I have been testing Groups.io for several weeks and made the decision to move the Amel Yacht Owners Group to Groups.io. Hopefully the transition will go as smooth as possible, but I am sure that there will be issues. We are moving all of our data with us. There is a minimal cost involved ($110/year), which Amel School will pay for 5 years. I believe that this will give us plenty of time to plan for the years after the first 5. The Moderators of our Group will remain: Mark McGovern, SM CARA, Mark Erdos, SM CREAM PUFF, Danny SIMMS, SM OCEAN PEARL, and Gary Wells, SM ADAGIO
I hope that you all will enjoy the new platform.

Re: Additional solar location?
greatketch@...
Miles,
I will only cast a vote against putting them on the rail. I KNOW it is popular, and lots of people do it, and lots of people have not had an issue with it. I did it that way on my old boat. They worked well, and were out of the way. However... Fourteen days out of Hawaii headed to San Francisco in the middle of a North Pacific gale we were swept across the deck by waves several times. Green water falling across the deck hit the back of the stowed solar panel hard enough to break the stanchions it was attached to. I see some of the "cruising" boats out here that carry all manner of stuff all over the outside of the boat, and the damage I imagine they might have sustained in such conditions is frightening. Granted, these were conditions that were pretty extreme, but not beyond what any boat crossing an ocean should be ready for. It gives me pause about using the rails for permanent storage of anything. We are all colored by our experiences, and this was the worst weather I ever hope to sail in. But it really gave me an appreciation for what moving water can do to things tied to a boat. It's why I keep clear decks when sailing. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Georgetown, Bahamas

James,
If the south coast of PR works for you, we had good experiences in Ponce at Club Nautico where we left Harmonie tied up in a slip for a trip back to the mainland. The staff was great and the facilities good. My recollection is that there were moorings in the harbor, but I am not sure if they were associated with Club Nautico, or were private. The only caveat is that we were there pre-hurricane, so not sure of the current status. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Georgetown, Bahamas

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Requesting advice marinas in Puerto Rico and St. Thomas
Independent Boat Yard Benner Bay St Thomas Is the most place I foundPlus you have easy in and out it from Saint Thomas around 900 a month my Amel 54 is there it’s a little tricky getting in as there is some Sandy Shoals on the way in if you stay close to the red you’re in good shape then once you’re getting closer to the marina you need the middle

Another alternative that you may like to consider is to mount flexible panels on a framework, in front of the mizzen, supported by the lowers for the mizzen. It was Graham Johnston on Zephyr (who I think you have met) who came up with the idea and attached are photos of how he attached a framework to the stays to support the panels. He built a platform on which he mounted the panels. In my case, I built a tubular framework and then lashed the panels to the frame. I have attached photos of one of my early iterations. It is a bit of a juggling act to work around the back stay and the forward lowers to maximize panel area. It may be easier on a Maramu than a Sharki but you need to have some feel for the geometry before you order the panels. The height that you mount the frame is also a key factor in determining the frame/panel width. I was just lucky with mine. If you decide to go this route, I can give you more details, off line. One of the nice features of this arrangement is that the cables can be run down the back stay and into the boat via the hawse pipe for the radar cable. Let me know if you need any other details. In St. Thomas, this is a good spot but being IGY, it is expensive: http://www.igy-yachthavengrande.com/
They have good security and not far from the airport.

Hello Amelians - I am needing to leave my boat for a couple weeks while I return home. I am looking for a safe and affordable location to keep it - either at Puerto Rico or St. Thomas. I would be grateful for any recommendations for either location. I'd prefer to use a mooring , though I am considering using a slip as well.
Many thanks, James SV Soteria SM2K 347

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Requesting advice marinas in Puerto Rico and St. Thomas
In PR, I can recommend this marina. It is safe and has excellent security. By road, you need to transit two guard gates to enter. There are no moorings, just slips. The docks are solid concrete. The staff will watch the boat for you and there are a couple of staff member you can pay a little extra to wash and care for the boat while gone. They will even send you pictures of the vessel while you are away. There is a car rental agency on site and very close to Wal-Mart and about 10 miles from Costco.

Additional solar location?
smiles bernard
Hi there
I’m considering removing my rear arch in favour of a much missed wind steering vane Currently the arch holds a single 200W solar panel and a silentwind generator I might see if I can pivot mount the 200w solar panel on the push pit side/railing on the quarter I’m thinking of remounting the wind gen on the mizzen eventually but mean time adding a bit more solar instead. Some flexi panels on the cockpit hard dodger is my current favourite location. I’d be interested to hear if people have had much success with this or suffered too much shading from the boom etc. Also how people have routed the wires for any solar panels installed on the dodger roof ? All the very best Miles Maramu 162

Hi Peter

This email thread is quite lengthy but there are some good points and link to a few helpful battery articles. It would be good to have a think about solar panels as well. I can organise to get these and sent out to you in Antigua or may be best for you to get Susie to bring them out which may be more cost effective. Let me know what you think. Perhaps have a look at the Amel site and see what others are using. Lynda 😊

This is why lead acid type batteries are not as cost effective over time as lithium, as lithium can be drained to 90% so you can use almost all or the amp hours you pay for.
