Hallo
I changed my switch last year in a Philippi Lau 340 with 3 inputs.
1st shore power
2nd generator
3. battery cable.
The generator always has priority.

This gives you the possibility to have 220 v permanently on the sockets in the ship.  Works great.

That type of manual switch is called a transfer switch.

Did you also install a galvanic isolator in the circuit while you were rewiring the boat?

What type of housing did you enclose the circuit breaker in your aft lazarette?

Hi Eric

The contactor is an automatic switch that selects either the power from the shore or the generator.  The manual switch does the same job, just manually.  I bought a Schneider Electric rotary switch rated for 32A, with an off position between the shore and generator position.  It is inside the same box in the cockpit locker, except the selector is inside the galley to port of the existing generator start switch.

My Stator was rewound for 610 euros including VAT, and was assembled (with difficulty) in the engine room.  It all works now.  I also installed the 20A bipolar trip switches in the aft lazerette that Bill suggested, and I took the opportunity to replace the full length of the shore power cable (right up to the rotary switch).

All the electrical work was done by an electrician.

Best regards

Here is a photo of a wrench that I made to tighten the nut. It is made from a piece of 6 mm aluminum stock and cut out with a band saw.

You can also make a long "L" shaped piece of stainless steel the vertical part of the L will hold the nut in place and the horizontal section is drilled for screws and this screws into the base below the nut.

I expanded the stuffing box and now have 5 pieces of packing in the stuffing box. I have kept the packing in a plastic zip lock bag taped with duct tape near the rudder stock along with a packing nut.

As it happens I’ve just ordered a new nut together with the packing material for our boat.
Regrettably the nut is not on stock at Amel, they just ordered new ones themselves but it will be September before they are back on stock.
Looking at your picture you seem to have enough room to tighten the nut 1/6 or 1/3 turn.
Be careful as the nut is made of nylon. A rudder gland should not leak at all. The packing material is grease saturated and should keep the water out.
Use a good fitting wrench to tighten the nut and turn it slowly. Do 1/6th of a turn and first assess the result before turning it any more. If movement is extremely hard, the packing material needs to be replaced first.

All good, it is a Generic Indicator 24 VDC Lamp T5 5mm, commonly used in the automotive industry. 5 cost $9, hate to know what it cost to run around town trying to look for the whole unit, ridiculous.

Mark,

We had several of these mushrooms completely missing when we bought our SM ~2 years ago and could not find replacements anywhere.  My extremely clever wife Denise came up with a "temporary" solution that is still working to this day.  She used Sugru Mouldable Glue to make her own mushrooms and they have been working great for 2 years now.

In the USA it's available online at Amazon, Target, Walmart, eBay, etc. However, its a UK based company so I am sure it available in the EU/UK as well.

Some pics of one of her handmade mushrooms as well as the Sugru box are attached below:

We have also have had surprisingly good success using this to fix some broken "fingers" on cabin top lockers. It really is great stuff to have around the boat!
