Following problem on a SN (119 From 1995)
Engine VP MD22 L
I have the following problem...
After a few hours engine ops the sweat water (coolant circuit) becomes saltwater. I suspected the leak in the bundle (the tube with the many small holes, about 40 cm long in the heat exchanger). I did a pressure check on this part with a compressor today and there seems to be NO leak. I slowly come to the end of my ideas... ? The engine is still good for it’s age, but running on saltwater will kill it sooner or later 😢 Anyone with some hints n ideas for me?!

Hello all, my ST 60 Tridata Raymarine instrument finally stopped working on the SeaTalk bus. Worked with Raymarine and did the troubleshooting and they said the unit was bad. So I can replace with another used ST 60 Tridata or and I50 Tridata instrument and get it back on the seatalk network. So I am looking to see if anyone has an old ST 60 Tridata or I50 Tridata that is fully functional they no longer need. (Maybe someone that upgraded their entire system). Re: VP MD22L

Patrick McAneny

Bernard , On my Volvo TMD22a the heat exchanger has a rubber cap on each end, the caps seal around the heat exchanger tube and also seals around the heat exchanger vessel or housing that contains the antifreeze. So the caps serve a dual purpose and the cap is tightened around the exchanger (tube) and the vessl with s.s. clamps. If that clamp is not tight or the cap is in poor condition then salt water can get into the coolant. Its not a great design and I have always worried about a failure resulting in what you have. I just replaced the caps because they were old ,dried out and lost their flexibility ,thus their ability to seal . I might add that I had an overheating issue for years and finally discovered that there was a rubber o ring seal that slide over the tube that had gotten old and broke apart. That o ring insures that all the coolant flows thru the heat exchanger. If you should buy new caps don't buy them for a Volvo ,but for a Perkins , assuming your engine is a Perkins as mine is ,same caps are $340 from Volvo ,$35 from Perkins. Hope this helps, have any questions...

Bill ,
Great to read . The Amel yachts and the Amel understanding of cruising at sea add up to something extraordinary which enriches the lives of everyone who owns or aspires to own an Amel. We do not consider it a hyperbole to acknowledge that owning 3 Amels for the past 30 years has been a central part of the enjoyment of living those 30 years - with many more to come .
A significant part of that enjoyment has been the camaraderie of others owners , not least yourself , through this website .
Long may that be so

2 answers at once.

1st pressure check done with a compressor. Meaning compressor to one side of the pipes and sealed on the other side.

2nd Will reinstall tomorrow. Seals seem to be good, will check to have them tight enough.
crack in the engine block. Can not imagine how saltwater would enter the sweat water circuit if the engineblock would have a crack. Exhaust fumes are clean.
Please keep fingers crossed. Don’t want to buy a new engine... But at some point.... how much do you really want to invest in a 25 yo engine...

After considering a plan similar to yours, we just replaced the old cockpit enclosure with a semi-permanent fabric Bimini-like top raised a few inches above the dodger.  It’s attached to the dodger and to the forward mizzen shrouds.  It has two large windows to see sail trim, houses two large flexible solar panels, and is high enough that I can see all the way around standing up straight.  The side and aft panels make a very dry and warm cockpit. We spent two days hove-to in 35kts with gusts to 45 and the new enclosure held up great and kept us nice and dry.

It’s been a total game-changer for me, being able to stand up and see all around...even when it’s raining cats and dogs.

Craig and Katherine on Sangaris (SN) did something similar, but theirs stops a bit farther aft and allows them to step into the cockpit without bending over.

I’d be happy to send you some pics of mine (or post them) if you’d like.

Brend,

As others have already suggested, the heat exchanger is the most likely culprit. You have a hole somewhere. Either in a seal or a failure in the exchanger itself. This would be your best case scenario. Else, you might have a cracked engine block.  This is unlikely but possible.

Hi Bernd,

It will be a seal that separates the two water streams. The TMD 22 volvos and different heat exchangers on different engines so cant be definitive but investigate all the seals

Re: washing machine and dryer for Amel 54

Martin Bevan <Martin.bevanhome@...>

We replaced the original Bosch machine in 2017 when it started to trip the power out. The replacement was as in the previous post, a Beko. There are very few half depth machines available and Bosch no longer make one. Our original machine was held in place by two bolts attached through the back of the machine which go through a panel at the back of the machine space and are secured by two Amel style wheel nuts. These are accessed via a panel in the port side double cabin. We fitted these bolts to the new machine.

The old and new machines just fit through the companionway doors.

On the the subject of tumble dryers, ours got a large amount of use, especially for drying towels when at sea. The main issue that we had was with the grill at the end of the exhaust pipe blocking, solved by removing the internal grill.

I'm not aboard now but will return to the boat around the 12th, so if you want the model number, I can post it then. And if you go for this machine, I can walk you through how I secured it. The boatyard tried to secure it and well, their solution resulted in the machine falling out at an inconvenient time. :)
