Dessalator D160 pre-pump / lift-pump / Low Pressure LP-pmp #replacement

Michael & Robyn

Greetings!
The LP gauge of our Dessalator D160 is always in the orange near the read range.
So I started to think that the installed pump's impeller has corroded away just as it had happened on our AC circulation pump. Both pumps were F.E.I.T. C20M CCM MATR P4258.
The image in the Dessalator D160 Owners manual shows a pump of a different type.
I have seen the messages in Mark's "Dessalator 160 Lift Pump" topic and Dominique's answer that his is a
CALPEDA BTM 61E.
The different pump diagrams may explain my issue with the LP pump not generating enough pressure for the flow through the 25/5 micron filters to feed the HP CAT pump.
The previous owners had a lightning strike while on the hard in Panama and I wounder, whether the wrong type of pump was installed back then.

Can anyone please confirm that the LP pump should be the CALPEDA B-TM 61E
or the more powerful B-TM 65E ?

That one is on my boat—there may even be two. I believe that it was a high-quality sales brochure.

Hello All,

We have an Amel picture style book with our 1996 model SM, I'm not sure if it is common, I haven't seen any scans in the files section, but maybe I've just missed it

It has perhaps a dozen or so hard card pages with gloss photos on it (like a children's book), I think it shows pictures of how to rig the poles and bits like that.

I'll dig it out next week and try and scan it if anyone interested, we are hauling out next week so might take a week or so to get the book to a scanner

I have to be very careful what i say here. Please be patient with me.

I will obviously rig my boat in steel. But dyneema is insanely strong. Steel may not hold the mast up under gust loading or capsize. Why would one not install two or four dyneema safety lines from the top of the mast to the gunwale. The dyneema wouldn't even need to apply tension to the mast. To avoid any chafing, they would not touch the steel shrouds and would be mounted within the confined protection of the steel shrouds.

Boats often carry a dyneema emergency shroud. Why not have emergency shrouds permanently mounted?

Other than aesthetics; i don't see the downside.

Thank you, Denis, Louis, Jean-Pierre, Richie and Bill. This is a great list to consider.

I was up the mast yesterday and there is actually a bit of rust on all four of the lesser main mast shrouds. So it might be the mizzen and a reefed jib to Malta lol

As the owner of a 1996 Super Maramu that came with every piece of paper ever generated, I am pretty sure that there were NO owners manuals specifically prepared for Amels of this age.  They DID come with the manuals for every piece of hardware installed, but Amel had not yet written a comprehensive manual for the boat yet.

I am 99.9% sure that the SM2K manual is the first one written.  I am pretty sure that Amel's logic was that the extensive training they supplied when the boat was delivered obviated the need for a manual for the original owner.

I just did something similar. We sailed from Siracusa in Sicily to Valletta in Malta. Our rigging was sent by Acmo to Marina di Valletta where Nicky Sammut replaced our rig in a couple of days. We sailed from there to Carloforte in Sardinia and on to Palma..and now in Ibiza. Nicky did a great job and was a pleasure to do business with.

Malta may not be too far out of your way for the rigger I recommend.

The batteries are MG Batteries HE Series 200. I am not sure of the dimensions. I'm sure it will be on their website.

https://www.mgenergysystems.eu

I specifically checked that they could be mounted on their sides before doing so. The installation instructions say that it is perfectly fine.

MG appear to be connected in some way to Victron because their systems are fully compatible and they share almost identical branding. The MG Master was much neater than anything Victron were selling at the time and made installation very easy.

Hi Andreas,

Thanks, although I already have the English version, the German version is new to my search and will be great for Jeannette, as she’s more used to doing repairs and ordering parts in German for her Kielzugvogel on the Zurisee. My German is functional, but my vocabulary of nautical and mechanical terms isn’t up to that level and we end up resorting to a form of techno-GermLish from time to time.

I’ve got to hand it to the Swiss, though; we haven’t even bought the boat or started the documentation process, but from a simple request about availability of our vessel name, they just sent a confirmation that it’s reserved for us!

Cheers,

Tilo

Hi Tilo...and congratulations on becoming an Amel "caretaker"...is that a bit like Patek Phillippe?

Have you asked Amel in La Rochelle if they have the manual??
Sometimes they can surprise you with what they have (but also what they don't have!)

Re: Early SM: Battery compartment for Lithium

Michael Fuchs

As far as I know there's no technical, chemical or electrical reason for the LiFePo4 cells and the internal BMS electronic to keep them upright.

However I do know for Victron Smart Lithium 12V that only the 330Ah is certified to be placed not upright. All other Victron Smart Lithium 12V need to be placed upright. This could be becuase of packaging, weight distribution etc.

Mastervolt should provide similar information.

Hello,
May I bump in this thread.

is there a problem disposing the battery on its side?

For example Mastervolt Ultra has a confusing statement it’s ok but better to have them on it’s bottom.

Hard to find a definitive answer to this simple question.

Hi Tilo,

I know that pain too. I’m using the SM2K owners manual and I wasn’t able to get hold of an SM manual. It differs in some details but in most cases it’s useful.

Despite her relatively good condition and constant care, I am disappointed to report that everything except for original purchase and transfer documents and the originals of the VAT payment documents, there is very little in the way of documentation for the vessel. Most importantly, the Amel Owner's Manual is absent. I've checked in the files section, as well as with Bill Rouse, but there is no digital version of the manual as yet. Have any of you good people scanned your owner's manual?

As I understand, the 1995-1998 SMs implemented a number of changes that featured some of the SM2K features and thus separated them from earlier builds. Yet I see many things in the SM2K manual that don't align with what I'm seeing and I want to know if these were customizations or as-built. So while I'd ideally like to get a digital version of the years immediately preceding the SM2Ks, any SM owner's manual would be a great help!
