Hi Craig,
I would be interested in the R/L switch as well. Thanks for looking it up! Duane |

Hey Kent,
I did mine 4-5 years ago - found a good replacement that has lasted and, frankly, looks a bit more modern than the original. I'll look for the details and let you know. I just got an answer from Maude this morning, they have the cables, and I asked her to ship them ASAP. In case you ever decide to change your cables, they are 335 euros plus shipping. After my experience, if you ever start to hear any noise or experience friction in the steering, I'd replace the racks, pinion, and cables all together. After having taken ours apart twice, and still one to go, it is not hard once you have solved a few mysteries.
If you guys ever decide on a Hawaii vacation while we are still here, you would be welcome to stay on our boat which we keep in a very nice resort marina on West Oahu. Liz and I stay at at my parents home most of the week, and a couple of nights a week on the boat to maintain our sanity. Both my parents are in there 90's, and are requiring about as much maintenance as our old boats do. Hi Alexandre,
The Blue Seas parts were about the same cost, but easily available in lieu of shipping from France. I'm hoping the BT genie is happy now. I've replaced the Limit Switches, the Actuator motor (probably due to the limit switch failure), and now the on/off switch. Maybe now I don't have to use it with fingers crossed! Hope all is well with you, Duane |

Arthur,
Not sure if you have this resolved or not, but I have a spanner/wrench for the rudder post nut on an Amel 55 which measures 85mm wide x 10 mm thick. Also, I am currently at Marina Real in A Corona for the foreseeable future. I don't know that the size is the same for the SM, but if it is, you are welcome to use it. John W. Thanks Bill Of course! I’m feeling rather stupid now but thanks for explaining it so patiently. I sent this after a long trip and I think I was brain fuddled. I’ll stick with that excuse for now anyhow ;) We just arrived in Tenerife for the start of a 12 month (or longer perhaps) family adventure. Packing up house and home and school and jobs and shipping 12 months of family ‘stuff’ as hold baggage was epic. Phew. Glad that’s behind us. Hoping to launch fri/Monday and relax into things. Very much hope to meet a few of this parish in person whilst en route this year. Santa Cruz currently. Heading to lanzarotte as soon as we are ready and there is any hint of the wind heading less easterly. Not even sure if that happens round here at this time of year but we will see. You can also see the “637” with 2 position (fur or unfurl sail) which is Amel part2743 For both you will need the little protective hood Amel part 2745 (same invoice) paid 2.58 Euro. Date: Wednesday, July 18, 2018, 8:22 AM I replaced the Bow Thruster On/Off switch and thought others might want to know what part will work. The old one was marked "APEM1, M4, 6-631H". I could not find a direct replacement from APEM. The replacement I used is from Blue Seas "Weather Deck Panel Switch #4150, Off-On, SPST" with a Blue Seas #4138 Waterproof Boot. By the way, the waterproof boot will fit the old switches if you need replacements. The old one was intermittently not making contact, I suspected corrosion. This would be a good inexpensive spare to have on hand, and I believe Amel used it for other devices onboard as well, for example, the Bow Thruster cut-out switch. DuaneWanderer, SM#477 |

Re: Antifoul and watermaker inlet?

Miles,
If your concern is the water quality out of the RO unit, rest assured you will not have a problem. Copper water pipes are the preferred type for potable water everywhere. Also, copper is a very large molecule, and would be very efficiently removed by your RO membranes. I don’t know about you Maramu, but on our SM most out the interior fresh water plumbing is copper. I believe you have to sign up for a Yahoo account (or log into it if you already have one). Somewhere on the signup form is a semi-hidden option to use your existing email address rather than creating a new Yahoo email address -- this is the option you want, and you want to use the email address that is subscribed to this list. I'm pretty sure that's all there is to it. Ryan and Kelly

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Steering Failure on 1992 SM72 "Aloha"
I posted my last before I read Bill Kinney quoting the Linear Drive's thrust as 480 kg. Raymarine shows both the linear drive and rotary drive handling a 20000 kg boat and they both have about the same power consumption, that is, essentially the same motors.
The difference seems that the linear drive has the mechanical advantage built in by way of its rotary-to-linear mechanism whereas the rotary unit has that mechanical advantage supplied externally by the rack and pinion and the sizing of the chain sprockets. And, as Bill notes, with normally small turns of the rudder, overcoming the back force of turning the wheel isn't a problem, and may not be a lot as compared with the 480 kg of thrust available. Interesting footnote to the Raymarine spec is that with the linear unit one must be able to back drive the steering system from the rudder. Sounds like a fun project, Herb, to add a linear drive to your Santorin, and I should think it will work just fine. Cheers, Craig ---In amelyachtowners@..., <sangaris@...> wrote : Excellent question, Herbert, and one I've wondered about, too. My wheel goes about 3 turns from stop to stop. That's 3 X 360° = 1080°. My rudder moves about 30° each way or 60° stop to stop. That's an 18:1 mechanical advantage, which is why Herb has to push so hard on the rudder to spin the wheel and move the rudder. (to say nothing of wheel diameter, rudder center of effort and friction) Granted the linear drive has a lever arm at the quadrant giving some mechanical advantage, but it seems it still must take much more force than the rotary drive. Interesting discussion. Cheers, Craig Herbert, There is no need to disconnect the cables when using the linear drive. The cables and wheel actually move quite freely, the force you need to move the rudder while on the hard manually is mostly just the inertia of the mass of the rudder. The inertia of the steering wheel adds some, but is not large. The linear drive generates 480 kg of force, and has no trouble turning the rudder even under very heavy loads. The cables and rack will see much reduced load and will wear LESS using the linear drive than they will using the chain drive. Most of the time, if the boat is trimmed well, the autopilot movements of the rudder should be very small. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Annapolis, MD, USA ---In amelyachtowners@..., <herbert@...> wrote : Hi Bill, I think I could not express myself very clear, try to say it again, sorry for my English: when the rudder is moved by the rotary drive (or by the steering wheel) it moves very smooth, you can turn it with the "little finger". If I try to move the rudder (on the hard) by pushing or pulling it I need quite a lot of power until it moves (and of course the steering wheel turns also). So I thought, that the system is designed in a way that it runs very smooth when the power transmission goes from wheel to rudder but not the other way round (eg like a worm gear...). If the linear drive turns the rudder by moving the quadrant I thought that there might be a lot of friction until the steering wheel gets turned by the ultraflex cables. Is it true that the linear drive also turns the steering wheel when working - I assume yes? This is not a question how the Autopilot works but how the Amel Steering works thx, herbert |
