Mike, Don't feel bad , three years ago I had mine rebuilt , and a few days ago I could not remember why . Finally , a few days later , I remembered it would get so hot it was smoking . For a while I questioned whether I even had it rebuilt . The brain drain has begun.

We replaced our turbo in 2013. Purchased from Marine Parts Express in Maine (google it) and received great service. They seemed to know Volvo/Penta quite well. Price was $1750 plus $500 for the core which was refunded when I shipped the old one back to them. Additionally there were 2 gaskets at about $25 each.
Also you might try Blouch Performance Turbo in Lebanon, PA. 717-865-3276. I found them helpful. They are a Garrett Turbo shop, and at least on Aletes our turbo was a Garrett. They rebuild. Garrett has a troubleshooting guide on their website and other information more than you may want to look at.

Re: Head swivel
Miles
Hello C'est si bon,
In my pre-AMEL days, I had a boat on which the swivel stuck. Some one from Hood sails told me to do this: run water through the swivel, then soak it with WD-40. Then wash again and soak again and wash again . This worked . I know that WD-40 is not a lubricant but it is a strong detergent and removed all the accumulated dirt. It makes a mess on the deck, but washes off with lots of water. I now do this about once a year and it has worked for 19 years. Regards, Miles. Ladybug. S/M 216. I too went through the TURBO overhaul… twice! A very smart diesel engineer told me the following to avoid the thing seizing… which it typically does during the off season when the boat is not in use. - Once in a while, remove the ancillary intake ducting. This includes both the duct and the air filter. - With a piece of wood, try to spin the turbo. If it spins freely, spray it with WD40 and leave it alone. - If it does not spin, remove it and place it in a diesel solution for some time… - Try to spin again, it should .. if not, it needs overhaul. :-( Preventive actions when laying up the boat: - Remove exhaust hose -Spin turbo with a piece of wood. - IF OK, spare liberally with WD40 - Place a clean rag in both the intake and the exhaust side to prevent moisture entry. - Lead exhaust pipe off. Apparently, the humidity generated by the salt water in the exhaust is the prime cause of TC seizures in TMD22’s Hope this helps. Jean-Pierre Germain SY Eleuthera, SM 007

Re: Turbo Rebuild
mfmcgovern@...
I was recommended to go to this place for rebuilds from a Garrett turbocharger dealer: http://gpopshop.com/services/rebuilding/
These guys apparently specialize in rebuilding turbochargers. I called them and they can do a rebuild on that turbocharger. Assuming there is no damage to the shaft or wheels, they charge $350 for the rebuild of that turbo which is really cheap. If they have to replace the turbine wheel, shaft, compressor wheel or center cartridge it will start to get much more expensive. They charge a $75 inspection fee but ONLY if you DO NOT have them do any work. If they do the rebuild for you, there is no assessment fee. Note, I do not have any personal experience with them or their services. They were just recommended to me by a Garrett dealer. Another viable option if there is wheel or shaft damage is to buy a new complete replacement CHRA (Center Housting and Rotating Assembly): http://www.invasionautoproducts.com/gatbchca447.html It the main "guts" of the turbocharger. You would re-use the original turbine housing, compressor housing and wastegate as those parts rarely fail. With this you have essentially a brand new turbocharger for way less money. Hope that helps some of you. Mark McGovern SM #440 Cara Deale, MD USA

Be sure to check the diameter of the hole... I forget if they are 16, or 22 mm... similar style switches are available in each size.
For what it is worth, I don't think of these as an alternative because they are cheaper, but because they are a more robust design. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Annapolis, MD

John, I recently rebuilt the swivel on Mango #62. The bearings are steel, not the modern Delrin type. Good news is that I was able to purchase the bearings and seals at a local bearing shop. I had to take the unit to a machine shop to press it apart. It is really not a great design, buy mine lasted more than 25 years before it was a problem. Miles,
My genoa is about 135%, 7.5 oz. cruising cloth. I had an identical sail made using 6.5 oz with a torqueless Spectra luff for the Facnor. I found the sail to be too heavy, so I changed the luff and now it is a spare sail. Then Ullman Sails in Durban made a Gennaker, or Aymmetric or Screecher, (whatever) out of 2 or 2.5 oz and that works much better on the Facnor. With the Facnor set up you use a built in Spectra luff and a Spectra halyard with a double block to increase purchase. The Ullman Screecher is only slightly bigger than my genoa. The Facnor attaches to the port bow roller. Cheers, Roger

Re: Turbo Rebuild
philipp.sollberger@...
Hi Paul,
I had the problem with my old turbo charger that it didn't activate because it was seized. I asked the technician from Secodi in La Rochelle. They tried to rebuild it but unfortunately they couldn't because the turbo was totally full of solid carbon and we couldn't change the rotor wheel. As last solution they have searched for a new one and they installed it. Since then I'm happy with my new turbo charger. To rebuild a turbo by a technichian is possible, but I think, it is only successful, if you realize the non function just at the first time and you deinstall it and rebuild it by a engine marine turbo specialist. I have the same pn from perkins installed this early summer and I paid for the whole turbo charger reparation round 1 K€ with VAT. How is the situation in the states I don't know. But I'm sure that they can deliver it also from Europe to USA or Caribbean. Good luck and fair winds. I have deep feelings for all the damaged people and yachts by hurricane Irma and Maria.
