Paul , No Skipjack would not be good for such a repair. However, Nick at Georgetown Marina would be . A million dollar cat hit a buoy just north of Norfolk , had extensive damage a couple of months ago. They had repairs done in Norfolk , they were poorly done ,so they returned to Georgetown to have Nick make the repairs correctly. They have a carpentry shop in case any woodwork needs to be done.

We had some hard encounter with a submerged breakwater. We hit with the keel just where the reflector of the transducer are for the logg. There are some de-lamination around the bulkhead just in front of the water tank. the yard we are at now said it more or less cosmetic. however we need to repair.
Probably in the Chesapeake area. So my question is.Is Skip Jack in Sassafras a good place for this or should we head for other place. currently in Port Washington and heading for Main so any good Marina on the stretch Main to Chesapeake bay would be suitable.
All suggestions highly appreciated

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Repair
Thank you Oliver
We were motoring at about 6 knots speed in flat water. hitting a submerged breakwater with a lot of big granit blocks We hauled the boat and the main impact is just below the sonic speed sensor, but the iron keel also toke some of the impact. I can't find the inspection hatches for the water tank. I assume one might be below the front open refrigerator, one might be below the combined fridge freezer but that one is fiberglass in and difficult to remove. I guess there should also be one forward of the combined fridge freezer but has not located where to get in an inspect the water tank. Assume the forward inspection hatch is the most important one right now. Paul on SY Kerpa SM#259 |

On second reading I realize that, in my original message, inadvertently I dropped a small but significant word, thus altering the meaning of the sentence. The sentence should have read “a number of improvements he had not been consulted about”.
Sorry about that.

Just for the record : SM hull N° 232, delivered in late July 2008, was in fact the first SM 2000, even though it did not get the label on its rubbing strake. And she was fitted with an Autoprop. I know that because I was the original owner, she was then named Satchimi and now Lady Anila, and this SM was built surreptitiously in the yard to avoid prying eyes while the “standard” SM’s were still being marketed. She is the boat where Henri Amel threw a tantrum when he discovered a number of improvements he had been consulted about. So much so that, to put his mark on the new model, he came back the following day and ordered that all further model would have the, in my opinion infamous, blue floor boards! Just a piece of Amel trivia.

[Attachment(s) from Bill & Judy Rouse included below] Chris,
Are you absolutely sure that hull 224 will accommodate an AutoProp?
As you may know the C-Drive case was modified during the Super Maramu's production to accommodate an AutoProp . Prior to that modification Amel offered MaxProp . I know that Hull #240 was the first Millennium, or Super Maramu 2000, and I believe that all of the SM2ks had AutoProps, but I am not sure about 224.
Y ou will compare the attached photo of Hull #387 to your C-Drive, you may be able to figure it out.

Olivier Beaute
Hello Paul, I fully agree with Joel, this cannot be qualified as "cosmetic". A few questions: -What was your boat speed and were you motoring or sailing, and what was the wind speed? The damages are directly related to these data. -Did you see the location of the impact from outside (diving) or did you get the boat out of the water? This area is critical and it makes a big difference if the impact is below the GRP keel/ballast junction or above (below the Sonic speed sensor or above). Your surveyor (and you) will need to inspect the whole inside of the freshwater tank too, and the main mast chain-plates bolts (from inside). Depending on the speed and if you were sailing or motoring, you will need to have the rigging inspected too. Good luck in these bad days. Olivier. Re: metalized Amel logo on vent covers
amelliahona <no_reply@...>
While I know you are inquiring about SS makeover, if anyone is interested in replacing with high quality vinyl (like Amel original), you can use boatgraphics.com (in Puerto Rico). Google it and call them. Felix is the owner and they have state of the art laser cutting equiment etc (I've been to his shop and it is impressive!) I had them make exact duplicates of the Amel logos on the vent covers as well as my boat name etc They fit perfectly! He has data saved in his computer & can duplicate exactly the logos, Just tell him my boat name Liahona , Gary Silver. As I recall even though he bundled multiple items for me it wss something like $35 per side and he will ship anywhere. Great customer service, great quality product. Gary Silver

Hello Paul. First, call your insurance company. They will probably want you to use someone local. You don’t have to but the costs to get him there and back could be on your account. Some are glad to have an Amel experienced expert. Some just think it will add to the cost of repairs ( and they are usually right ). Paul Anstey is at 954-270-1949 pansteymindspring.com. I will send him my first response to you. Send me some photos and maybe I can put you more at ease. Good luck with the process. Joel Joel F. You can also remove the fiberglass arrow cover with the Amel logo’s and take it to any good graphics supply studio. Most have technology to reproduce better quality highly anti UV protected replacements easily and it will cost much less, especially considering the shipping and packaging, and last longer than the Amel provided ones although the 15-20 years they endure is really not so shabby. Pick a shop glad to have your business and tell them if you get good duplicates to ‘save’ the job as you will put the shop on this site for other Amel folks to use. The guy I used to use retired as I just called and his phone is disconnected.. A shop you have to beg to help you will produce less satisfying results. Ask me how I know this…

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Repair
amelforme
Hi Paul and sorry about your bump. You are starting off with bad advice as anyone who says this is cosmetic is wrong. Cosmetic is abrasions and deep scuffing. Anytime you have structural delamination, particularly in a structurally important area such as that area on your boat with damage, a deep and intensive look at the entire structural system for the boat is required. Why? Amel boats are of monocoque construction. Google it. Essentially, the boat can be both lightweight and strong too because all elements of the construction are joined together structurally and depend on each other much more so than in a regular/conventional production built fiberglass boat. A strike in this area can produce incredible loads to the primary structural grid that supports the keel and the mainmast. The force from the impact can be transferred to other structural elements not near the impact site. At the very least, get an Amel owner who is very familiar with the structural details of the Super Maramu to have a look. I would also have someone who knows sophisticated fiberglass laminates to use a borescope to look in areas around the bulkhead under the main mast and adjacent areas to see if any stress cracks, or worse are present. You should get expert advice from someone familiar enough with Amel boats to screen potential repair facilities to make sure your boat will be repaired properly. Olivier would be your best solution by far. The surveyor I use in the United States used to build fiberglass boats in England and has surveyed at least 400 Amel boats for me over the last 35 years and would be a good second choice as we have seen some boats that were damaged and also ones that were poorly repaired by yards unfamiliar with Amel’s or who just didn’t really give a damn. If you send plenty of good, high resolution and well-lit photographs, I can make a preliminary report to help you decide what to do next. It is important to do things correctly and I have seen the exact same situational damage before and I have seen some really awful repairs and I was involved in two good ones with the help and guidance of my colleagues in La Rochelle. Be careful until you know the true extent of the damage. Not trying to frighten you, just to let you know your first prognosis might be suspect.

Hi Paul, Sorry to hear you have some damage to Kerpa. I'm certainly no expert, but if you have some de-lamination on a bulkhead, I would consider finding a good surveyor who knows Amels that can do a very through inspection. I'm not sure what yard would be the best in that area, but I know Kent usually recommends Deltaville, as they have some experience with the Amel. Best of luck getting it sorted out quickly, and continuing with your summer sailing. Steve Davis Aloha SM72 Aruba
