Tony,
For sail maintenance we have had good results from the local North Sail loft. They will come to the boat and remove the sails, and reinstall them when complete. Bill Kinney SM160, Harmonie Le Marin, Martinique

Thanks Danny. That's a good product to have in case you need it. We'll probably try for a longer term solution first, but may have to do what you have suggested.

Thanks James!
We now suppose the serial number was written incorrectly or we read it wrong. And that the V is actually a U for United Kingdom 🤣 Unfortunately I think the parts 4 engines does not have the pump with the correct spacing between the bolts...we have heard good things about the company from our friends also. Thanks for all the tips. We'll try everything we can! And we'll try to get in touch with Umberto. Hope he can help us. Cheers, Kimberly SV Kujira Maramu #98 Sardegna

We installed a 10K Webasto in that space. Fits fine.

Hi Eric, Hope all is well. As my Climma units die, I have been replacing them with Webasto FCF Platinum units. I am very happy with these. My oldest Webasto unit is 2 years old. The plumbing for seawater is the same size and the units are plug and play. It includes the control panel, so this is an additional savings. The units appear to be well-made. One of the key selling points for me was the cooling water requirements (GPH). It is much lower than Dometic requirements and as you know the Amel moves the same water through all 3 units, so it is good not to have a finicky unit that will shut down. Also, they are less expensive. https://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1&id=3050595 Hope this helps.

We found the height restriction made a it a challenge finding one to fit. We went with a 9k reverse cycle unit by Mermaid Manufacturing that just fits. Bill Kinney

Hi Kimberly, a get you going for the moment fix would be hand moldable epoxy. I used it on the exhaust elbow on a previous yacht when I was on an ocean passage. It lasted well. The product I used was emerkit. It will even adhere to wet or underwater surfaces, wood, epoxy or metal. I wont go to sea without it aboard.
Kind Regards

Re: A54 Furler wiring
As reported earlier on this forum, I had one going up in smoke quite literary crossing the ocean. Not a great experience as the guest cabin was full of smoke that smelled terrible. Typically the smell of (bromate) flame retarders. So on itself that was good or else we would have a fire on board. But it was a scary experience.
I removed the device (the Boom version) and cleaned up after it. It kept smelling for days. I put in a 50A megafuse instead (Not the 100A that was tied to the cables there!) and that has worked fine since although I’m very careful using the outhaul. The device is a current limiter with auto-reset function, using semiconductors (solid state). Useful to avoid burning out your furling motors. The furler motors are apparently around 450 Watts each, drawing less then 20A, but probable with higher startup current. I’m planning to ask Amel what to do about this once I’m in France. The blow-out may have to to with changing to Lithium batteries that have less voltage drop at high loads. There must be better versions of these devices. They seem to be custom made given the lack of identification on them. Regards, Arno Luijten A54-121

Kimberly,
The Perkins engine was a pretty popular engine but I did not know that some were some manufactured in Pakistan.
My contact in Arbatax is Umberto at the Reiulta yard. If you contact him, let him know that you have been in contact with James and Joann SV Sueno, We stored with Umberto for years and found him to be honest and fair. Getting parts in Sardinia did prove to be a bit difficult unfortunately. If I can help further let me know.

Re: Engine troubles in Sardegna
James Alton
Kimberly,
Parts for engines, (parts4engines.com) has the freshwater pump in stock for 95 pounds. They have been quick to ship items to me. I ordered a gasket set yesterday for my series 200 Perkins and it shipped today. Wire brush off the paint and rust on the stubs for the water pump and soak with PB Blaster or whatever penetrating oil that you can get ahold of. Tap on the nuts respray and be patient. The heat will help draw the penetrating oil in. The hole in the water pump is a drain hole and needs to be left open. When the seals are good there is no leakage out of the hole. Unfortunately once the seals fail the water pump bearings tend to fail in fairly short order so you need to get this fixed.
Best of luck,
James Alton

We've found a hole in the fresh water pump ( see photo below) and now it's a struggle to get the nuts and bolts off to remove it. We're in the process of trying to find a replacement pump of the right model. What should be easy is made complicated by the fact that it's 40 years old, the nuts are rusty and we've tried heating them, WD40 and brute force. Only a couple of them have budged...

Re: A54 Black Water tank hoses replacement
Hi Rusian,
Yes, all black water hose will become permeated with bad smells after time and you clearly do not need to replace the ball valve. A much better option, and what I did many years ago, is replace all the hose sections with PVC pipe. It completely eliminates all odors forever. Use rubber couplings to connect the PVC to the through-hull and tank, which eliminates any vibration issues and makes installation a snap. The rubber couplings come in all sizes you might need, from straight and reducing couplings to "Y" connectors (it looks like you would only need two straight couplings for your fix). "FERNCO" seems a major supplier and Amazon has a full line of several brands. For other than straight runs, you can assemble PVC components ("Y"s, "T"s, Elbows, etc) as needed and then use the rubber couplings at the ends as needed. After many years, if the flow is decreased by salts building up in the pipes (just as it does inside of hoses), it is a simple task to disconnect the PVC sections, clean the salts out with acid and reassemble. - Fair and sweet smelling winds, - Craig Briggs - s/v Sangaris / SN68 Tropic Isle Harbor, FL
