[Amel Yacht Owners] New Kind of Bow Thruster problem.

Alexandre Uster von Baar

Good afternoon,

Friday, I hear similar (high pitch) sound to a lost propeller on the bow thruster (happened to me 1 year ago).
This morning I dive to inspect the bow thruster, I was expecting to see the propeller missing, but it was on…

It felt strange that I could manually rotate the propeller in the water, I do not remember I could that before… but I could be wrong…

So, I thought may be something was disconnected or broken inside the foot of the bow thruster.
Retrieving it from the water, when I turn the propeller it turns the shaft (connected to the electric motor).

So what could be the cause of the electric motor turning and not the propeller?

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely, Alexandre

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Genoa Furling diagrams?

Danny and Yvonne SIMMS

Hi Chris,
A possible cause is the spring loaded pin that locates the pulley at the bottom of the foil to the gearbox. This can be lifted up to free the furler from the gearbox. It is possible for the spring to fail and the pin to lift on its own or for the locating hole to become worn and the pin to slip.

Subject: [Amel Yacht Owners] SM Genoa Furling diagrams?

Hi All,
I think I have a gearbox problem.  When I furl the genoa the motor turns & the sail furls a bit then stops, while the motor continues, then it catches for a bit & then stops again. Etc, etc.
Does anyone have any sketches or diagrams for pulling it apart?  Can anything be done without taking down the forestay?
Many thanks,

Sorry I've just done search of the forum and found a good number of pictures & information on the furling system.  My Ali drum is made of 2 parts bolted together but other than that it looks similar to that later diagrams.  Now I just need to get it apart!

Re: Mizzen stay sail

Paul,

Just to confirm your setup...

The sheet first comes aboard to a block clipped to the padeye on the toerail roughly 1 meter forward of the transom, then goes to a fairlead block clipped to the base of the stanchion that is just aft of them mizzen upper shrouds, then to the winch.

If we are on a passage of any length at all, we drop our outboard in the sternlocker, so that's not an issue for us, although I know some outboards are too big for this solution.  I can imagine a loose and flopping staysail sheet could snag the engine somehow.

We have never had trouble with the ladder on starboard tack.

As an aside, the traditional place to sheet a mizzen staysail on a ketch is the end of the mizzen boom.  It theoretically gives you a bit more flexibility in sail shape, especially getting it more open when going more downwind.  I tried in on my Amel, but didn't see enough benefit to make it worth the trouble.

Hello
When sailing with the mizzen staysail with wind in from starboard, we have no problem with the sheeting point.
But with the wind in from the port side, the sheet interferes both with the ladder outside the rail and with the outboard motor when stored on the rail. Does anyone have any good suggestion for how to arrange sheeting point on the starbiard side

Many thanks to Kimberlite on this issue.  The missing diode on the stop solenoid lead is the most likely culprit.  The diodes, one on the stop solenoid lead, the other on the lead going to the starter solenoid are Motorola MR752's .  I feel sure that this will solve the problem.  If not, I'll re-post.

Do you have any specific information on your boat?  Possibly photos?  My wife and I have the SM on our short list. Thanks. Bob

Bob,

That is a great story and probably happens more often that once.

Thanks for sharing.

Maybe the next time, you'll use your "Amel Certified Wet-vac" to suck out any remaining pieces and bits. 😉

Best,

Bill

Great to hear it was a simple fix!  Let me post this for relevance in future searches:  I had a "mystery" problem with my mainsail furler motor--I had pushed it a bit hard furling while looking into the sun.  Corrosion X would solve it momentarily even with a new brush inserted (BTW Amel was distributing brushes that were a bit oversized but it is easy to sand them down to a correct size by rubbing them on an abrasive surface--just don't overdo it).  Anyway, ended up that a thin section of the original brush had fractured and remained in the top of the brush insert and I was inserting the new brush into this, causing an intermittent problem.  Even with inspection with a flashlight it looked normal until I rotated the motor and looked up the brush insert space to discover that I could not see the commutator moving.

Never considered a brush breaking off and sticking inside.  Good to know its a possibility.

Hello Ann-Sofie

I am a newer Amel owner!!

Thank you for your answer.

First time on board and I dropped my cellphone next to the air conditioning outlet! It was very difficult to pick up!

Alex,

I do not have the exact answer to your question, but maybe I have a piece of the puzzle for you. I am fairly sure that your hull number had an Amel recall on the original alternator. Do you know if you have the original or the replacement?

I think this may be a case to have a conversation with SAV at Amel. sav"at"amel.fr. If I were you I would attach some closeup photos of your alternator.

And, I am surprised that Electec could not help you...my opinion of those guys is good.

Best,

I haven't been to T1G but aware of it.  I've been to many places like it.  Range layouts have become more effective in their layout in recent years.  Seems that I remember T1G being the Olive Group at one time.  I used to spend time in Memphis at the instructors conference and there is some real talent up there. I'm very familiar with the 300 BO, built a few and have sent many thousand rounds downrange.  Effective in a suppressed mode, likeable here for hog hunters and some operators.  Seals and Delta I know really like the 223 77g tungsten frangible for what they do on soft targets out of the same basic weapon platform.

I'll take another step along on the diode spec, Will be glad to knock that issue out, but no hurry.  Touch base on this when you're aboard again.
