Thanks for sharing your experience. All good information. I wonder if the Volvo D-3 110 would have any different requirements and therefore be more sensitive to a 2 micron filter that your Yanmar? I also have plans to add a fuel polishing system that would also allow new fuel to be filtered prior to going to the tank. I will post under a new conversation. My dual racor filter shows little if no vacuum. I have been using the 2 micron filter now for 5400 engine hours and just changed the nozzles on the injectors which looked very good. We had no wind for 7 days and ran through 250 gallons of diesel and the vacuum gauge still read no vacuum. Possibly it is the Howells fuel treatment. I also filter my fuel through a huge Racor filter (used in high volume fuel pumps) using a pump. (thanks Ian). I have spoken with the yanmar mechanics about this on many occasions and they agree that if my tank is clean and the fuel is clean a 2 micron works well.
On my previous boat when I was restoring it, I used a 2 micron filter to clean the bottom of the tank. It lasted 2 minutes. If you feel that you have bad fuel or crud in the tank I would use a 30 micron filter. I keep a few of those on board in case I get a load of very bad fuel. Thanks every one for the replies. We do have dual racors and the fuel polishing system and pre filtering before it goes in to the tank all sound like good ideas.
Is any one aware of any negative effects of the additives? Also how do you find out the sulfur content of the fuel you are purchasing?
On a slightly different point, I purchased 12 extra rancor filters and later found out that my supplier sent me 2 micron instead of the 30 micron recommended by AMEL. In reviewing the specs of the 2 micron filter it sounds like it can handle the flow. Has any one used the finer filters ?

Hi Alan Your experience is exactly the same as ours. We haven't been out sailing for a few weeks now but ours did similar things over a period of a couple months (perhaps only 20 hrs sailing though) then started working well again with dead accurate speed after the last time I dived on the sonars and scraped them clean with a sponge scourer. I do not know why or how but sure am glad it's working well now? Thanks for the updates on your trip around Fiji. Hi Alexandre, The first time we changed the oil in our propeller leg it was done by an Amel engineer at La Rochelle. He advised me that the O rings that came already fitted to the bronze piece were not always true and that before inserting the new seals you should do a trial fit of the bronze piece to ensure that the O ring that came with it was a tight fit. As a result I bought about 10 spare O rings. I have probably changed the bronze piece about 8 times so far. On each occasion the O ring that came with the bronze piece was a good fit, but I am prepared in case that should not be the case.

B&G Sonic Speed
I've researched all the msgs on this topic 'cos I thought ours had died. Yesterday when we were about to enter Suva Harbour, Fiji, the B&G boat speed instrument went crazy - down to 2 knots then up to 10, down to 2 ...sat still on 6 (the speed we were actually doing) then up to 10, down to 2...bizarre behaviour. At anchor off the Royal Suva Yacht Club (I can't see what is so Royal about it!) the readings were between 0 and 3 knots..... This morning its just the same...opened the processor box, read the manual...says the LED should be red...it's not...manual says adjust the spacing knob...OK...find a spot where its red...instrument readout is even more crazy......manual says probably the processor needs replacing...great ! Motoring out of Suva harbour still crazy...dive below...the LED has gone out...readjust the spacing knob to get it red again...still nuts.... THEN as we passed out of the reef ...about the same place that it went nuts yesterday, it suddenly seems to come right....weird... We slowed the boat down, and sure enough boat speed went down, sped up to 8 knots and its spot on, back down to 6.5 knots...still OK...and its been fine ever since.... Anybody had this experience ?? Pail, I delayed answering you because I was hoping someone had the exact answer, rather than trying to measure the O ring. But, since nobody had it, I attempted to measure it. I believe the outside diameter of the propeller shaft is milled to 1.5 inches which is 3.81mm. I measure the O ring at 3.9cm inside, 4.5cm outside, and 3mm thick, but since there are at least 10,000 sizes of O rings, and the O ring is flexible, I cannot be 100% sure. I believe that since someone other than Amel made your wear bushing that you should have several sizes of O rings. The "correct" size O ring is the one that you can feel seal as you press the wear bushing onto the shaft. If the bushing slides onto the shaft too easily, you will have a leak. If I were making these, I would want to be 100% sure of all of the specifications including the hardness of the bronze. As you probably know. the Vickers Hardness range is very large for bronze. Do you know the Vickers Hardness of the Amel bushing? I do not, and I suspect our Turkish friends did not either. But, if I knew, I would think seriously about two O ring slots rather than just one. I believe that this O ring fit is crucial to keeping water out of the C drive. I always remove the O ring and place waterproof grease into the slot in the bushing for the O ring, and on the O ring. I think everyone should do this. I showed this to Amel in Martinique. They agreed and now are doing this on all wear bushing replacements they do. Another very important thing is to clean the inside wall of the cavity that the outside of the Lip Seals press against...and to grease the inside of the Lip Seals and the inside of the cavity.
