I originally mention my interest to have Olivier inspecting my vessel in March in Sint Maarten, therefore I am deleting with business issues and have delays on my side. I definitely recommend him for survey as well as inspection as my first choice. When I purchase my vessel in 2012, I used Martial Barriel and was very happy with his work. I think it is very good to be in good communication with the current owner, therefore I would recommend a survey as the current owner is not as familiar as Olivier and also one will be required for insurance purpose. Even with all the corrosion to the windless casing, the bolts and nuts (which were all accessi ble) were removed with minor effort -one nut had to be exposed by cutting away a bit of fibreglass. The original holes all lined up and the new windless slipped right in. Even though I cursed myself for not attending to the maintenance required, I figured 33 years is a pretty good run for a windless and now with proper maintenance, I'm sure this one will outlast me.

Herbert We installed the Waeco 140 litre unit. I had to take out the platform the previous fridge stood on but is slides in just fine. The wooden door does go on the front but leaves the top section visible where the door lock section is. The freezer unit is noticeably bigger. While the fridge was out I installed a computer extractor fan above the worktop to help the air flow over the compressor which is on the top right at the back of the fridge. The Waeco 12/220v automatic switch unit is probably well worth installing as it doesn't cost much and you have a generator on board. The insulation seems good on it. I turn the thermostat down at night and the freezer keeps everything frozen. We are pleased with the unit but if we were starting again we would research a two drawer fridge and lose the wooden door front. The drawers lose less cold air than opening the door. Good hunting. Hi all Today I opened up all the 3 aircon units on Island Pearl II to take a closer look at the capacitators as after always working perfectly in the past, all three units developed the same problem at about the same time, ie. they would start then simply cut out after about 15 - 20 seconds after a click sound. Interestingly after reading Gary's and Bill's posts on these some time back, and not getting the time to look at it properly till today, I opened up the units and in all three it was the 10UF capacitotors (located under the metal cover & cable tied to the larger 40UF units) that were blown. As a matter of course I will purchase six of these right away so we have a spare on board for each aircon ahead of cruising north across the equator later this year. I will replace all three and assume that this will be the problem hopefully easily solved, however it troubles me that the exact same 10UF units blew on all three aircons...... hence my question to the group... Why do you think all three 10UF capacitators would fail at the same time? Also, those who already replaced these (and I think the 10UF ones were also problematic on other boats in the forum) did the new ones run well for some time after, or should I expect that they will blow again soon? Lastly should one consider replacing the 10UF with perhaps a 14UF??? or is this unlikely to solve the issue and possibly introduce even more issues...? We had a one day test sailing with the owner and after we bought it, he was three days with us on board to explain everything. We still have a very good contact to him. In our case a surveyor was not necessary. It would have been different if we didn't know the owner. We plan to be in approximately 3 days in Martinique. If we can help you, it would be a pleasure. I am not sure what is installed in the Santorin but we rebuilt our refrigerator this summer on our SM2K. We basically kept the shell and replaced the ice box condenser, thermostat and compressor. It took about a half day to remove the fridge and install the new parts and put it back in place. This way we still have the same facade wood front and did not have to do any cabinet work. We saved a considerable amount since we did not need a new box. We replace the removed parts with the same frigoboat units. The frigoboat parts come pre-charged with refrigerant and we had to only connect the condenser to the compressor with the easy connect color coded couplings (no r134a needed). The whole job was about US$1,000.

Fridge for Santorin

did anyone exchange the fridge? We are looking for a replacement that should have a small freezer, like the original one. Our fridge runs now about 2/3 of the time or more and needs too much amps per day, so we think we will replace it by a new model, but it should fit without modifications at the nice mahagoni door... we found the Waeco CRX110 would fit from the dimensions, has also a nice freezer, but the opening mechanism seems not to be compatible with the current system/door. The Isotherm Cruise 130 would also fit but there is no real freezer inside, only for temporary use (info from the manual) What models will fit, any recommendations / experiences? thx, herbert SN120, KALI MERA, Dominica |

When the shop pressed out the old bearing, there was a round key between the outer diameter of the bearing and the pulley. I wasn't expecting that! It's about 2mm in diameter. Needless to say, I cannot find a bearing with a round key. I wonder if Dessalator didn't machine that into the bearing? My bearing supplier says the GMN FKNS 6206-2-RS bearing does not show a round key in the outer race... Did you have the same experience? Or perhaps you got the bearing from Dessalator? The Dessalator rep here in the USA notes Dessalator recommends replacement of the entire pulley-bearing-collar assembly for almost $500 each pulley. A bearing distributor here in WPB wants $480 for the GMN OEM bearing alone! The replacement bearing I found also can be had with a standard keyway in the outer race, and I'm going to check with some shops to see if I can have the pulley wheel cut to provide a keyway to match in the pulley inner diameter. If anyone is interested the replacement bearing from Boca Bearings is CSK206P(X) for a keyway on inner race or CSK206PP(X) for keyways on both the inner and outer race. In the meantime, I'm going to order a pulley without the clutch bearing that will fit on the CAT Pump shaft for the 24 volt motor. The other motor won't be belted to the CAT Pump. That way I can fix the bearing problem with the benefit of time. It will be good to have in the future if I have more trouble with the clutch bearings on the CAT Pump. Duane |
