Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] hookah

Hi Kent,

Good to know you are being safe.

I also use a 60’ hookah hose. But I use dive tanks for the air supply. We have a Bauer dive compressor aboard and can refill our own tanks.

We also use the hookah hose so we can leave our tanks in the dinghy when diving. The great thing about this is the dinghy is always above us (with a dive flag) and when we are done we don’t have to worry about finding the boat.

With best regards,

Mark

It's an oil less compressor, Mark, inline filter, and hose is safe.  I got the info from a professional diver who, among other things like salvage, cleans boat bottoms.  It's what he uses.

Yes Joel they are the largest inFla and maybe to U S regard size and capacity. Lifting up to 300 tons and lots of dry storage. Great location they also use the name LMC.

Duane, I am thinking about taking my boat to Fla.,this winter, however I would need to haul it and leave for awhile. Could you tell me a marina in Fernandina that would be good to haul the boat or leave in a slip for a month or two.

Kent, sorry to hear about the eye surgery.  You've really made some miles since then so you are coping admirably.  Peg and I are heading to Tiger Point Marina in Fernandina Beach for a haul-out and paint.  We may be stopping in Ft. Lauderdale to have an inverter installed.

Hi keep in mind that as Bill and Alex noted you also have to check on the engine mounted alternator and/or voltage regulator to be sure you can successfully charge the AGMs
There is normally a small dip switch on your Dulphin charger to adjust it. But as stated earlier are AGM or Gells worth their high cost.

Richard,
Yes, I was aware of that. In checking on the dolphin chargers aboard the only literature provided was an installation manual, and it's in French (very helpful....not). I took a look at the units themselves, and there appears to be no visible means to make any adjustments to the unit to account for any different means of operation. That being the case, I sent a message to dolphin requesting a manual for use, and some information regarding anything needed to change on the charger (if it's possible at all) to be compatible with the charging of the AGM batteries.
The AGM batteries I'm considering have a significantly higher capacity to produce energy then the flooded wet cell batteries.
FWC 195 RC
AGM 190 + 400 RRC, so in effect, the 400RRC capacity gives me quite a bit more ability to produce current to my systems w/o need of charging.

Just a thought but if flooded batteries last 5-6 years how much long do AGM ones last and are they worth trice the price. ??

I can  get 31M-AGM7 batteries with a RC (reserve capacity) of 190 + 400 RRC (repetitive reserve capacity-basically adding 400 minutes to the RC for $250, with 36 mo warranty.

Compare to $115 for a flooded wet cell with a RC of 195, and 18 mo.

RC (for those wondering) is the amount in minutes the battery can have a 25 amp draw before going dead.

Unless I can be convinced otherwise for good reason, I'll spend the extra $. Thoughts?

My good friend Eric (Kimberlite) brought up the possibility of using Velox(spelling) paint on the prop.

The issue of keeping the auto prop clean and growth free has been discussed ad nauseum on the site.

With that said, I question the value of a painted on product. Obviously the ultimate answer is regular cleaning .

Unless that is possible, the spray on pettit prop coat seems like it would offer a smoother result (aerosol application) and give some protection.

Eric commented to me he got 6 months out of an application.

Anyone have any experience with it or insight?

Thanks,

BTW...thanks for the furler responses

Good morning Bill,
What does the washing detergent does?

Jeff,
The problem is not the battery charger, but your engine alternator.

Only use AGM's if your
battery chargers, including high-amp engine-mounted
alternator can be set for AGM charging. If you do not set
the charges for AGM charging the AGM will work, but you
probably will not get the life that you planned. I would use
a normal wet cell for the engine start and fit the highest
amp battery that will fit...there is more space for the
engine start than a Group 31.
I have used lots of different ideas
on the prop. The best has been Velox and if you use a black
bag over the prop, be sure to add 2 cups of powdered clothes
washing soap to the bag.

Good morning Jeff,

Hope to be corrected if wrong, before you purchase AGM
batteries, make sure your engine alternator can be set for
AGM, otherwise you will damage the batteries.

(Obviously your Batterie Chargers can be set for AGM).

I had Velox put 1.5 year ago, and it worked beautifully for
1 year, I will use it again.

My 2 cents: Extreme care should be taken with hookah systems. Inhaling air from a compressor not intended or specifically designed for breathing is a bad idea. Bacteria, oils and foreign particles from inside the compressor can cause serious upper respiratory issues.

Keep in mind that the AGM batteries have a different charge requirement then flooded ones. Second when out in the world you most likely will not find AGM replacement units.
Just a thought but if flooded batteries last 5-6 years how much long do AGM ones last and are they worth trice the price. ??

Anyone have issues with AGM batteries outside of possible replacement in remote areas?

Jeff , I used Velox this spring , three months later my prop was covered in barnacles. I contacted the company and got no response. I was in fresh water, perhaps it is not meant to be used in fresh water , however that was not mentioned on the can. I scraped off the barnacle and sprayed on a couple of coats of Pettit.

Only use AGM's if your battery chargers, including high-amp engine-mounted alternator can be set for AGM charging. If you do not set the charges for AGM charging the AGM will work, but you probably will not get the life that you planned. I would use a normal wet cell for the engine start and fit the highest amp battery that will fit...there is more space for the engine start than a Group 31.

I have used lots of different ideas on the prop. The best has been Velox and if you use a black bag over the prop, be sure to add 2 cups of powdered clothes washing soap to the bag.

Good morning Jeff,

Hope to be corrected if wrong, before you purchase AGM batteries, make sure your engine alternator can be set for AGM, otherwise you will damage the batteries.
(Obviously your Batterie Chargers can be set for AGM).

I had Velox put 1.5 year ago, and it worked beautifully for 1 year, I will use it again.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] batteries and prop paint

I can't comment on the Velox, but  two things come to mind.
If you leave your boat in the water for any length of time, the black plastic bags trick Joel taught us really works!  I was gone 10 weeks with my eye problem, and when I removed the bags there was only a light whitish discoloration that came off easily with a wire brush.  Try it!

I built my own hookah system with a $69 (on sale) pancake-style compressor from Harbor Freight (big box store in the US) and a rebuilt second stage SCUBA regulator for $55.  I've used it three times to clean the bottom & prop, change the zincs, or remove a mile or so of fishing line from around the propshaft.  Works a treat!  Highly recommended for all boats.  I have a 50 ft hose that would reach a fouled anchor in 35ft of water or more.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: mainsail furleer 54

Hi Bill;

No, our solenoids did not fail. I was placing an order with Amel and thought having a spare would be wise.

Jeff, the issue we had was with our mainsail furler. Pulling into Datcha Turkey, I believe, in a 25 knot breeze, the furler would not furl the main. I had to disengage and manually furl. The removal of the furler motor is a fairly straight forward process. After removing  the bolts that hold the furler to the mast, the wires can be fished through the mast after the wires have been disconnected from the relays in the forward port side cabin locker. In our case, water poured out of the motor when we removed it. I sent the motor back to Riza at Emek and he said that it was toast and a new one was ordered. The installation was also straight forward and it has been working fine since. One important note, in talking with Maud at Amel, she mentioned that there is a seal at the top of this furler motor that needs to be replaced every two years. This, I believe, was not know and therefore never done by the previous owner and led to the water intrusion and failure of the motor. I have ordered spare seals from Amel and have placed the seal replacement as a part of the maintenance procedures.

Our head sail furlers are Bamar belt driven. They were both bad, again mainly due to water intrusion from the top seal, according to the bamar repair tech in Turkey, and had to be re-built. All gears, bearings and belts replaced. We are extremely gentle on the Genoa furler and it has been working and sounding fine. I did make several attempts to contact Bamar regarding their Amel offer letter . I never received a response, despite the fact that receipts of the e-mails were acknowledged. I do not know why and cannot speculate.

Let me know if I can be of any additional help.

Have someone stand in the fwd head while you operate the furling switches.
If you hear the solenoids clicking, its probably the brushes as Danny says...we do clean them every few months.

Jeff,

We have Lifeline AGM batteries and they are holding up great. I don't see any downside--other than the initial cost premium over flooded batteries.

My battery bank needs replacement. Trust me. Forgive me if this information has been discussed before, and is redundant.

Anyone have issues with AGM batteries outside of possible replacement in remote areas?

Bill,
I'll look into that tomorrow, thanks.
I hope I can figure out how to navigate my way through the site to find the info, LOL.
