If you are European and eventually plan to sail to Europe you will prefer VAT Paid. If you are American you will save a little money if the VAT is not paid, but if you plan to sail then sell your vessel in Europe, VAT Paid would be more attractive for a buyer. If I may expressed my opinion about “something you can just go”, this is a matter of individual interpretation. Personally I spent 9 months learning the boat before starting my trip (I do work full time, also live full time onboard). By learning the boat, I am mainly talking about maintenance and spare parts you need (for the engine, genset, transmission, bow thruster, all the pumps, restroom valve, etc.). If you sail the US or European coasts no issue obtaining spare parts, but if you go further you have to be prepared. Example: I spent almost 21 months in the Bahamas & Turks and Caicos the parts there will cost you 3.5 times what you would pay in the USA. In Dominican Republic you will not get any parts, more precisely (even using UPS, Fedex, DHL), the parts will take “1 month” just going through custom with you calling several times a week, etc. So be wise and prepared. Good morning Steve,
Which country are you in and which currency are you talking about? I purchased my Super Maramu in 2012 from Jean Paul Bahuaud at Caribbean Yacht and have been very happy. They currently have http://www.caraibe-yachts.com/en/usedboats.php?search=builder&builder=1&length=0:0 In your price range they currently have Maramu and Mango (I have always love the Mango). Hi Steve from NZ. I have been lucky to purchase a Santorin 46 in NZ. There is a 41 footer in Noumea which is ready to go the husband died unexpectedly and another in Langkawi Island which also seemed to be in good condition and ready to go if either location worked for you. Perhaps try MR Google to look for Amel for sale but if you were interested I can probably find links to an owner in the case of Noumea or a broker in Langkawi. Rebedding original handrails
James Alton
Hello, I was hoping that someone might know how the stainless tubing forming the handrails on the cabintops is fastened down? I have some rust in the area that the handrail sits on the fiberglass in a couple of places so I am concerned that moisture is being held in those areas. I do not have any obvious leakage below at all. Thanks, James Alton SV Sueno, Maramu #220 Sardinina, Italy |

Alexandre,
On Peregrinus, the top of the 30A sits about 3cm higher than the top of the 100A. Because Mastervolts cannot be installed sideways, the 100A stands, vertically, where the two Dolphins used to hang; and the 30A stands, on a backing, against the port side hull, on top of the shelf outboard of the gen set. The 30A is shorter, but its base sits higher than the 100A, so these both end up at about the same height. Having said that, clearly ventilation inward, where the 100A hangs, is better. In fact, I have never gotten a temp alarm for the 100A, whereas I do recall getting alarms from the 30A twice while I have owned the boat. Add to this the fact the 30A was mis-installed for a couple of years —when we bought the boat, the 30A was installed below a Dolphin charger, the 30A on its side!—, so it's been stressed. Re: Lofrans Tigres Windlass rebuild question
Thomas Peacock
Many thanks to Steve and others. Indeed with much difficulty, the rope drum and clutch came off; the springs were totally encrusted with salt. I have not put it back together again (will use new springs in the rebuild kit), but I see no reason why it should not work.
As an aside, we have had a sailmaker construct a small cover for the windlass. Hope that it will cut down on salt residue as well as UV degradation of control buttons. This forum is invaluable! Tom Peacock SM Aletes #240 Chesapeake Bay, USA; Florida and Bahamas in 3 weeks |

24V DC motors for main sail
Dear gang Does anybody have a source for the 24V DC motors on main furler and outhaul gear boxes on an older SM? I know the newer SMs have another gear box and therefore most probably also a different motor. I found the original gear boy from Bonfiglioli for about 80 euros at sotek.it, but cannot find the motor. It has a diameter of about 83 mm and is approx. 153 mm long - there are 4 cables going to the releis in the guest bathroom, not only 2. Cheers Robin ASM #56 presently in Greece www.gros-doux.com |

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Victron Energy Centaur 24v 60amp charger
william_maffei@...
Hey Alexandre -
Thanks for your comments! As always! I am not sure what is happening right now but as we speak the charger is running normally (26.3v in float). When I run the engine for extended periods of time my engine room never exceeds 40C and while on my slip connected to shore power the engine room is around 24C. On hot days it might be around 31C tops. Also note: this is with the charger turned on and the transformer humming away. I guess at the moment I am fine with not running the charger while I am away from the boat as I have plenty of power and solar energy to likely run the boat for weeks without it turned on. While I cruise I only have the charger on while the genset is running for about 2 hours a day so again, this causes not problems. The strange part is that if I notice it goes to lower amps at 100% charge and still puts out 28.4v, I simply turn the charger off wait and hour and turn it back on and it works fine again and moves to float at 26.3v. This is perplexing to me. I guess it really pays off to know you boat and all its systems. I am very in tune with anything out of the ordinary on board. Again, thoughts and comments from other owners are welcome. I am by no means qualified to remedy this problem. Bill Maffei It's all Good Sm #195 |

Hello Bill,

I don’t know anything, this is only a suspicion: Here is my train of thought: I had the original 30 and 50 amp Dolphin chargers. My 50 Amp failed (2 years ago in Nassau), I was surprised as I use it much less… Thinking my 30 was failing I also replaced it, so now have a 40 and 60 MDP (they purchased Dolphin). Recently the display of the 60 failed… (same thing surprised as I use it less). But I noted both are at the top of the engine room. I suspect is the temperature is getting too high at the top, even with both blowers working, it is not enough. When motoring or using the genset, I constantly monitor the engine room temperature because I am afraid of reaching 50*C which will start melting the Onan control board. I often end up opening the engine room hatch, but still get 47*C a little over the Generator where my gage is. The temperature will be higher at the top of the engine room (where the charger is). One of my project is to improve the engine room ventilation. Several options on paper, from simple blower to just move the air or additional extractor blower like we have. haven’t committed yet to one. Idea are welcome of course!
