Bill based on your discretion the worm gear bearing/ bushing is worn allowing it to run free. Normally it's a self locking system. Regards Capt Richard Piller On Jul 17, 2016, at 11:08, 'Bill & Judy Rouse' yahoogroups@... [amelyachtowners] <amelyachtowners@...> wrote:

Yes, Ben. I have been emailing Neils directly with photos, but determined that it is an Amel installed standard 24VDC house battery alternator. Every SM 24VDC alternator I have seen has the optional 175 amp Leece Neville Alternator.
Regardless the relay is the same. Sorry if I caused any confusion. Bill BeBe 387 On Sun, Jul 17, 2016 at 4:44 PM, Ben Driver/YAHOO joedoakes66@... [amelyachtowners] <amelyachtowners@...> wrote:

That this makes perfect sense. I am going to disable the gearbox and rebuild. Rivets absolutely need replacement but I can confirm this is not the issue because as Kent pointed out I was easily able to furl the sail with line. Cheers to all my fellow Amel owners! “Foil wobbles while rolling in…” Is the tension on your headstay high enough? Furling while the headstay has a larger than normal sag to leeward will heavily load up the mechanism and could be contributing to issues.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Head sail furling
Hi Bill. If you can furl manually with a line, the rivets are intact. If the pin is engaged, but the motor doesn't turn the foil, you must have a failure in the gear box. If it is "wobbly", that confirms that a gear or bearing is out of place. What did you ("they") do to repair it last year? Okay, so I looked at it further and it looks like it is working. It is wobbly as all hell but the bolts have not sheared off. The furling motor is fine. The rivets do look a little loose but I am at a loss as to why it would just completely unfurl while the pin was engaged yesterday and now it works "okay". Some work definitely needs to be done but I am not sure. The head sail is tight but the foil wobbles when rolling in under power. Thoughts?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Head sail furling

Bill, One more guess... Maybe the worm gear inside the furler mechanism is somehow binding. I would guess that if this happened the motor would shear. Possibly a bearing or bushing has caused the gears to get out of alignment and they occasionally bind. I think after you check the obvious, this is next on your list. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Yanmar 24 volt alternator make/model
Hi Neils,
yes the relay is related to the red lamp maybe you have a faulty relay (unlikely), but its more likely to be the alternator itself and/or the alternator regulator. I don't recognise that alternator, maybe someone else with a similar vintage boat can help. Otherwise you need at least an auto-electrician, but preferably a marine electrician that understands the Amel isolated ground system, to investigate it. Good luck Alan Elyse SM437 |

Thanks Bill and Alan, you are very kind to send the pictures.
Please look at the pictures I just posted, in the photos section (did I do it right?). In my Amel manual, this alternator that is in my engine room, looks just the same...I am not sure if my boat was "born" with this alternator after all...I believe it may be original... Any idea the brand / model of this one, the sticker is worn and not readable. I measured all the cables, no fault, I have a new relay to try instead of the old one on the engine, - is this replay related to the red lamp? Thank you so much. Niels

Hi JP, Get on the PYI website, and they have a very simple video on how to determine your rotation. Mine is right hand. As you take the max prop apart, look at the 2 sets of letters carefully so you know how to get it back together. If you have any issues, contact PYI. They are very helpful. Also, after you have the blades off, you can remove the hub with a generic 3 arm gear puller. We did not need a special prop puller. Good luck on the project. Steve Aloha SM72 Grenada
