Hello

Has anybody installed an EFOY fuel cell on the boat?
If yes, where is it installed and what are the experiences?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Solar panel installation - AMEL 54's

Tony Robinson <tonywrobinson51@...>

Hello Mohammad.

Answers below:

The bimini is the original one supplied with the boat. The only modification was to add two S/S steel struts at the back of the bimini frame from the glass fibre doghouse/screen. The bimini is now rigid - so it can take the weight of the solar panel.

The solar panel was supplied by a firm in Lefkas Greece called Metronix. They have a website. I used them because my boat is based nearby, in Preveza Greece.

The panel is rated at 250W at 24V. It is rigid, glass, and is found in home installations. I have seen it deliver 5 amps in bright sunshine, but more generally it delivers 3 to 4 amps. This is obviously not enough to run all the electrics but it does make a meaningful difference. As I said, I now run my generator much less than I used to. I also make sure I actively manage my electricity consumption - if it is not in use it is swictched off, including instruments, inverter and all lights - which have all been changed to LED's.

The boom does shade the panel admittedly, However I tie it over to one side as in the photo when not sailing. I paid 600 euros for the S/S frame to be made and another 500 euros for the panel and MPPT controller from Metronix. I fitted it myself.

I am still using the original batteries on the boat, supplied in 2008. However I am planning to replace the domestic bank later this year, but 8 years is not bad going for a boat that is as energy intensive as an Amel 54.

Hope this helps.

Tony Robinson.

Hi Tony;

I did receive it. Thank you. So you had to make a new bimini stainless structure or just added one to the top?

Can you please send me a link to the solar panel and controller that you used. What is the total max wattage of your panel? How many total Amp Hours do you get in a nice sunny day? Have you noticed a big effect of shading on your panels due to the location.

Sorry for the multiple questions. I appreciate your responses and the sharing of your experiences.

Hi Mohammed,

Is it possible for you to upload the photos to the group that you received from Tony of the solar panels on the arch?
We are planning to install solar panels at the end of this month on our 54.
Would be great to see how others have installed these panels.

Thank's and Kind Regards

Hi Bill & all,

I bought the sensors from the Pochon office in La Rocelle in May 2015.  Maud Touillet at Amel told me to contact them.  The person to contact at Pochon is Stephane Geniteau, the technical service manager.  The email address is:  stephane at pochon.com.

panels are 200W each 1580H x 808W x 40D...and yes they are Chinese. AA Solar - Importers and Distributors of Solar Panels and Alternative Power Systems

They are the biggest panels I could have on the arch. Riza maked the top frame to suit your panel dimensions. I have had Chinese solar panels on my previous boat and they were perfectly fine. I think the majority of panels, no matter what the brand name, are now made in China.
As to wiring...we ran the cable in the starboard side cable clutter, the MPPT controller is mounted in the hanging locker opposite the aft head, where the regulator for the wind generator is mounted and wired in parallel with the output from the wind gen reg which feeds directly to the battery positive and the shunt.
Essential that you have an MPPT controller not a standard solar reg. MPPT maximises the output, standard regs just regulate the voltage

Our panel installation is exactly the same as Bill Rouse's on Bebe. There are pictutres here I'm sure, but I'll post one anyway.

Mohammad.

Attached is a photo of my installation. Note the charging wire down the side of the doghouse which, as I said, I have fed directly into the battery compartment via the vent tube behind the side cover on the coaming. This is fine by the way - there is plenty of room left to vent any gases and besides, my batteries are fully sealed gel type.

Hope this helps.

Hi Alan,

All that I am reading is convincing me to install as many solar panels as I can.
Firstly I am putting 2 x 270w panels from SolarXXX who are in Germany on my rear arch. SolarXXX recommended a 30amp controller. This arch is bolted through the deck, on advise from Olivier I am putting large plates under the deck for strength.
Could you send me a photo of your panels on the gantry? Any ideas would be helpful with the mounting on my arch.
Should do the install later this month.

Gerhard,

That is great news. My information was also from Pochon, about two years ago. I also discussed the subject with the Pochon office in Martinique in February this year. And, I also had several discussions with B&G who searched for new old stock and found none.

Which Pochon office did you buy them from and when was this?

Hi Bill & all,

I bought new B&G sensors from Pochon (www.pochon.com).  They are the original suppliers for Amel.  The cost for two sensors was 455 Euros without VAT and transport.  They are the straight ones and do not need any fibreglass cutting work, should be easily replaceable when the boat is out of the water.  I haven't done it yet.

I have mounted a 250W panel on top of my spray hood using a purpose built stainless steel frame. It doesn't interferre with the boom, and I did not have to drill any holes in the deck as I fed the charging wire down the battery vent tube. I believe it has cut the use of my generator in half, and keeps the battery bank topped up throughout the winter.

Hello "54" owners,

I contacted the owner of a 54 who installed 4 X 150W solar panels on an Emek marine produced gantry.

He was my dock neighbour and has agreed to share the details of his installation if you are interested.
