So I opted for the most powerful panels with the smallest footprint, that being the Panasonic N330. Two of these deliver 660W in theory. I got up to 590W peak in the first month. They are roughly 3m2 for 2, about 2.1m wide when side by side, and 1.59m long. Most other brands are closer to 4m2 for the same power with monocrystalline cells. Installed flat on an arch over the transom. I also took advantage to install LED lights with an outside switch over the transom. The Voc is 69.7 and Isc 6.07. Allowing for 25% more in extreme conditons (eg very cold and sunny), I opted for the Morning Star Tristar MPPT 60 controller. It's an overkill, but the MPPT 30 and 45 were out of stock and this was only slightly more expensive with better features (eg Ethernet connection to browse performance history). Each of the 2 panels has 4 zones, so if any zone is in shadow then the other 3 continue to work at full power. By the way, a great place to locate the MPPT is the hanging space just before the battery bank. Remove the false cover to reveal a shelf. The outer tube is a direct connection from the lazerette to the chart table, so I broke into it for the wiring. I installed 2 breakers, 16A from the panels and 32A from the batteries. If battery circuit breaker is triggered then the solar panel is also triggered, to avoid damaging the MPPT. Together with new AGM batteries I have a power transformation. I used the Generator just for 1h in 5 weeks, thus saving diesel. I reduced gas cooking by running an induction plate and microwave off the invertor. I added a Torqeedo Travel 1003 electric outboard, which is also charged indirectly form the solar panels, and saving petrol costs. On sunny days the batteries were always 99%+ charged after about 11am, even when running autopilot, making tea, etc. Yes I opted for the more expensive ACMO rigging, including all new turnbuckels etc. It was rigged in France by Gremco. I had also contacted Amel to do it, but they no longer use ACMO on SMs. Although Amels quote was less, I thought it better to go with ACMO. However, within a week I noticed rust appearing on the 12mm ACMO swages. The others were OK. I hope that between Gremco and ACMO that they will sort that out. Could you please tell me which model of Victron Mppt regulators and Victron MPPT Control units you have? Sincerely, Alexandre SM2K #289 NIKIMAT Club Nautico de San Juan, Puerto Rico --------------------------------------------

Date: Saturday, July 2, 2016, 9:02 AM Barry and Penny!I'm fare from an expert on solar panelsBut hear is my thought's so fare.We have three 150 w panels in serie on the Arc, they are Turkish origin, and so fare we are very pleased with them. The two on the rail are from Sunbeam (Germany I believe) light weight panels also in serie, they give compared with the one on the arc fare less, they give on average 15% of my total solar energy but nominal it should give 31 % if everything equal, but they come more often in the shadow from the mizzen boom, We have two Victron Mppt regulators, and two Victron MPPT Control units, and I have the feeling that the MPPT for the rail panels "reads" what's coming in from the larger solar system and reduce out puts. I have the same issue with the two Battery charger I have, if I run them both when on shore power at the same time the smaller charger does not contribute after a few minutes. I guess it could be the same with more than one solar charger, especially if the charge rate for my batteries are high say +95%, but that is not a big deal, they looks giving OK when battery around 90%.Our thoughts was to have two light weight panels on our Bimin in serie with the rail panels, but the canvas man told us it's not a good idea, as they will chafe, "destroy" they shape of the bimin and that it will collect moist between the panels and the canvas. So we decided not to put them there, but I'm considering to put them there anyway, to put chafe protection, the shape I'm less concerned about, then we have the issue with moister, but our Bimini is not very large and to replace it now and then is not a major cost.Paul on S/Y Kerpa SM#259 en route to Sicily #yiv6235990196 #yiv6235990196 -- #yiv6235990196ygrp-mkp { border:1px solid Re: Solar panels for SM
Barry and Penny!
I'm fare from an expert on solar panels But hear is my thought's so fare. We have three 150 w panels in serie on the Arc, they are Turkish origin, and so fare we are very pleased with them. I guess it could be the same with more than one solar charger, especially if the charge rate for my batteries are high say +95%, but that is not a big deal, they looks giving OK when battery around 90%. Our thoughts was to have two light weight panels on our Bimin in serie with the rail panels, but the canvas man told us it's not a good idea, as they will chafe, "destroy" they shape of the bimin and that it will collect moist between the panels and the canvas. So we decided not to put them there, but I'm considering to put them there anyway, to put chafe protection, the shape I'm less concerned about, then we have the issue with moister, but our Bimini is not very large and to replace it now and then is not a major cost. SM re-rigging plus mast painting
Stefano Biffi
Hallo everybody, my Lady is ready to be re-rigged, I'm in contact in France with Russo yachting. They offer me the full painting of the masts and bomas done as new: sanding priming and 3 hands painting for around, not yet finalized, 26K and 6 weeks of work.
Re-rigging with BSI terminals for around 4000, still waiting a new offer with ACMO as I requested. I also gave a call in Malta to a rigger who already work for Bill, waiting for his offer. Now my question is :anybody knows a place in Italy, will be closer for me, where You suggest to ask a price forecast? Thanks for you time and ciao Stefano N'EVEREST SM185 now Cagliari Italy

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Gaz electronic shut off
Hi Bill, We are the third owner bought May 2015. First - Peter and Nicole Mills bought Jan 2006 name "Top Gun" Second - Pierre Brenet bought Aug 2007 name "Diablo Citron II" We think we have a reasonable history of the boat. Anything that anyone can give is appreciated. We know the boat sailed to US in 2006 after delivery, then back to France in 2007 by new owner. Then sailing along French Med and around Corsica. This is what the original chart plotter shows. Best Regards Barry and Penelope Connor "Lady Penelope II" Amel 54 #17 Sailing French Med. Hi Bill and Steve, Thank's for that I will invest in one of those laser thermometers. The replaced unit did get too hot to touch. This new replacement is now not left on, I did buy the original 24v replacement. In the meantime I will continue to turn on at the bottle and switch and not leave on after use. You have for now put my mind at rest. We have now started sailing, just left Marseille after spending 12 months checking and fixing things after buying last May 2015. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Gaz electronic shut off
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Barry, Please allow me to help, somewhat. The electromagnet in the valve will work with the wires reversed. When electromagnetic solenoids are engaged (energized), they will get hot. The cooking gas solenoid is a "normally closed" 24VDC solenoid valve. A 12VDC valve is the most common valve available and if you installed a 12VDC rather than a 24VDC valve the heat you notice is the electromagnet slowly burning up. "Hot" is a relative term. How hot is hot? Questions like yours are better answered with more information. If I were you, I would buy a less than $50 hand-held laser thermometer. You will have more uses for it than I can list. Turn on the valve for 5 minutes and measure the temperature. Then come back here and post your question with the additional information. Either I or someone else will take our laser thermometer, check our valve and get back with a comparison. I hope that you continue to enjoy your 54. Hi Eamonn, Wandering around Cleopatra we spotted Travel Bug, looking well !
Are you able to tell me where you had her rerigged ? Did you use ACMO rigging ? Were you happy with the riggers ?
Also, can you tell me the length and width of your solar panels and their output ?
Hope you can source your bolts OK.

I replaced my gas valve and solonoid as the original was getting very hot when turned on. The new replacement seems to also get hot. Can anyone advise regarding this? Have I mixed the 24v wires? Regards Barry and Penny Connor "Lady Penelope II' Amel 54 #17 Sailing French Med

Re: Solar panels for SM
Hello Paul,
Hope that you or another member can also give me some extra advise and helpI am looking firstly at putting 2 solar panels on our rear arch. Can you tell me how your 450w is set up? I have seen 250w 24v panels, they are about 1600 x 920 in size. Our generator works fine pumping in high amps but I think that some solar panels would act as a good daily top up.I have just completed my full Bimini cover and I allowed for 2 flexible 100w 12v panels on each side, wired together for 24v and run through 2 controllers, the sun hopefully will be shining on one side! I would fit these after doing the solar panels on the rear arch. I would then have 3 controllers in total. This would give me - 500w 24v from the arch, each side of bimini - 2 x 100w 12v linked giving - 2 x 100w 24v from the bimini. If I am correct potentially a total of 700w through 3 controllersIs this too much? I have included 2 photos of the Bimini which I have just finished using 1" tube, new 2 tone sunbrella (black on top and beige underneath) and a sailright machine. The bimini has a slight arch to assist with water run off and square corners for max coverage, 2 windows for viewing the mast, headroom is 6ft+. As I am new at posting and attaching photos I will hopefully soon post a full breakdown of this project. For now I want to install solar. Any advise in regards to the best solar panels and controllers would be appreciated. Best RegardsBarry and Penny Connor"Lady Penelope II"Amel 54 #17Sailing French Med Coast. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Solar panels for SM
Hanspeter
It looks as you have very little faith in my knowledge about electricity, and you are probably right Physics and Electricity etc, was not a very strong point for me during my studies, but maybe I got it right this time anyway. Now at 09:45 my Emek solapanels give me + 8 A, and when the sun are a little bit higher we rather often get + 12 A and not unusually 14 A for a while. My Victron MPPT Control gives me more data than I need, but it gives peek watt for the day, and and June they where often above 320 w with and average peek reading of 359 W. It also give total stored kwh for the day which for June was on average 2.05 kwh, given that the Victron measures correctly. kwh is often the units you are billed at from the electricity company, in Sweden you are billed for how many kwh you consume/month, but the price could be set daily, then they calculate how many kwh/day you consume. In my case the Victron calculate how many kwh going into the battery/day. Watt is calculated by the formula P=UxI so say 25 volt at average 8.3 A, gives P=207w, if we have this average conditions for 10 h, we get 2,07 Kwh. What's the problem ? We run 2 fridges and one freezer, all lamps are led, usually my computer and instruments are on 24h, in the morning our batteries are around 90% according to the Victron BMV 700, and well before the sun goes down our Victron reeds 100%, this is when we are at anchor. Obvious the solar panels put in substantial amount of Energy into my batteries Paul on S/Y Kerpa SM#259

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Bow thruster shaft removal
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Ian, Thanks for letting us know that it worked out. I am especially glad that nothing was broken in the process. It amazes me that a few owners like the previous owner of your boat let things like this go until they become very serious problems, usually solved by them by selling the boat to someone else. And, this sort of thing is almost never found by a surveyor. There is only one surveyor in the world who would spot this problem in a pre-purchase survey and that is Olivier Beaute gmail.com>.
