Re: Isolation Transformer

Hello Andrew and Kate
Are you please with your Victron Quattro 5000/24 , our inverter does not work and our charger are only 50 A so I'm thinking of the same combined charger/Inverter and also include an isolation Transformer

Is it Nessesary to change water heater?

Paul Osterberg

When we looked at second hand SM before purchasing our, we notice that most have newer water heater i.e. the old one has been replaced. We will upgrade our boat this winter at Emek Marin, and I'm wondering if I as well should change the water heater? nothing wrong with it as I can see, but it's 16 years old, and can't have to many years left in service. Any one of you who have any experience with this?

Hello Mike,

yes it is time to replace the rubber bushings. No, I don't know the exact dimensions of these bushings. Any marine mechanic workshop will have matching sizes as these bushings are made of reinforced rubber hoses used in fuel lines (try to use ISO 7840 ones).
It is better to do the replacement out of the water because:
-you should generously grease the bolt's threads before tightening
-once tight, you should cover the hex head, and fill the gap around with (black) silicone compound (and let dry...)

Will, what you did is OK for a temporary repair, but you'll have to do it again (with grease and silicone) next time you haul the vessel for antifouling.

Have a good day.

Olivier.

Mark,

There is no fuse on the Bow thruster motor.

We were talking about the jack motor for the bow thruster.

When I add a fuse this week I will post a photo.

Good evening,

originally, there was no fuse protecting the jack motor. In case of a rope caught in the bowthruster foot, the motor was unable to lift the unit all the way up and this caused the motor to fail. That's why AMEL installed (maybe around 2004) a 10A fuse on the positive wire feeding the jack's motor.

For those who haven't such a fuse on their bowthruster lifting motor, I would highly recommend to install one (a car-type flat one or a glass tube one) on the positive wire.

Olivier.

To answer: “What causes the fuse to blow”.
In “my” case, one of the sensors stop working, I was bringing up the bow thruster, it did not stop (I am guessing: when it reach the top continue to push, requesting additional amp to the circuit) then thankfully the fuse blow up preventing more damages.

I have a 10 amp fuse, but I think someone mentioned putting a 5 amp would be enough and may be safer.

Bow thruster jack fuse

sailormon <kimberlite@...>

I was digging around a locker today and found a brand new bow thruster jack. I had ordered it a few years ago when we were hit by lightning but did not need it.

If you are wondering if you have a fuse in the control box just look at the cable entering the control box from the bottom. If there is a bag with a couple of 5 amp fuses in it- you have the newer unit as I discovered today on my spare.

I've started flushing the chain locker with fresh water when it rains.  I collect the water in the dink and pour it down the hawsepipe.

Hi, Santorin18,
They sometimes call me "Rusty" because I had a ball of over 100ft of chain rusted into a solid ball in my chain locker.  It was a horrible job getting it out, but I am now intimate with me chain locker(:
At the bottom or the chain locker is a false floor with lots of ~2cm holes which allow water to drain into the bilge.  There is no access to the bilge.  I had to cut a hole in the false floor to get all the rust particles our of the bilge below the false floor.  On my SM243, the drain hole through the bulkhead is just a few cms below the false floor, so water and debris can accumulate in the bilge.

There is a pipe glassed into the hole and to the bulkhead that is attached to the hose that drains to the sump in the engine room (part of the gray water system), and a valve just aft of the bulkhead.

If the valve is closed, just open it, if it's open, remove the hose from the pipe and run something up into the pipe to the chain locker.  Be ready to catch the water with a bucket or better yet a wet vac.  If it stops up again the bilge in the chain locker (below the false floor) may be full of debris.

I found a thin 14 year old farm boy who climbed into the locker and cut a 10 x 15cm hole in the floor with a vibrating saw (sorry, I don't know what it's called).  He cleaned out the debris with a wet vac.  I screwed a plate to the piece that was removed to keep it from falling through into the bilge when it was replaced.

Even if it was just a closed valve, I'd take all your chain out of the locker and inspect it to be sure it isn't rusting.

I am guessing the Santorin is similar to the SM.

Hope that helps.

Splashed yesterday, bottom painted, topsides and hull polished, all electrical issues resolved.  Ready for guests and crew!

I'm on schedule to leave Deltaville,  VA on the 25th, have 3 other crew.  Two will say and see some of Buzzards Bay for a few days, then a couple who used to own an Amel are joining me for two wks of hopping around Cape Cod.

After that no commitments until the last week of Sept when an OPO guy from NYC will join me in Long Island Sound and sail into Ny Harbour with me.  There's still room on that leg, too.

Lots of interest so I think it will start to fill up pretty quickly over the next couple of weeks.

Hope you can join me somewhere along the way.

Please reply by email so I'll have a record of who wants to join me and when.  Hard keeping everyone straight after a phone call while I'm up the mast (:

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: C-Drive

Mike,
I think you are on the right track.  I'm sorry but I didn't measure the rubber hoses used to dampen the torque on the bolt.  The stainless steel sleeve slips over the bolt easily, and it is a tight fit between the sleeve and the smaller piece of hose.  It's also a tight fit between the smaller hose and the larger one, and between the larger one and the hole in the "foot".  It will be obvious when you remove the bolt.

I think it will be difficult to find the exact sizes of hose to replace the old ones without going through Amel, but with careful measurement of the hole and sleeve, you may be able to come up with replacements.  I'm sure they are metric size hoses. Maybe Olivier knows???

Sorry again that I didn't take the time to do the measurements and record them.

I don't think that the "slop" you describe is critical.  Being early August you may have to wait at least a month to get the replacements from Amel.  Maybe Olivier can advise if it would be OK to use it until next haul-out.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Upon haul out we find on Aletes that the lower c-drive can be moved about 1/2 inch side to side. From the thread on this issue, it would seem time to pull the bolt and sleeves to examine and replace worn parts. It would also seem that the stainless sleeve provided a rigid stop to the bolt being tightened while the rubber hose (or hose within a hose) component provides the shock absorption without taking the bolt tightening pressure.

I could not find a conclusion to this issue in regards to the specs of the rubber component to be obtained for replacement. I am assuming that the stainless steel sleeve will be in OK shape and can be reinstalled.

We will be attempting this work on Friday and hope to post pictures to document the procedure. Any advice prior to that would be appreciated.

Mike, I just completed a similar repair the rubber bushing is simply large fuel hose. For the spacers between the bottom of the drive and keel I used three large rubber washers. I had a diver do the work in while th boat was in the water.

Re: C-Drive

Mike Ondra

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] speedie sleeve on wearing out bearing

myersdon1

At Rebak Is., Malaysia we installed a used wear ring with Speedy Sleeves on Harmonie in October 2011. New seals and a new o-ring were used.  After returning to the Chesapeake Bay we inspected the wear ring in October 2014.  At that point the speedy sleeves had 815 hours on them.  There was no measurable wear.  The surface where the seals contact the speedy sleeves had a somewhat shinier appearance as the seals seem to polish that area.  We reinstalled the same wear ring with the same speedy sleeves using new seals and a new o-ring.  Now with an additional 380 hours there is no sign of any water in the oil.  I expect the life of the speedy sleeves will be several thousand hours, however the seals should still be replaced on a regular basis.

Andrew & Kate Lamb

I have uploaded the specs document for the linear actuator – the motor on my linear actuator burnt out despite being fitted with a 10amp fuse – I think I was a bit unlucky but decided on the basis of this document  to fit a 5 amp thermal circuit breaker.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] LED deck lamps

Hello again Eric,

Yes the lamp is very bright… Too much for romantic dinner, unless I keep the bimini on!

Haven’t installed the foredeck yet either..
Unfortunately I didn’t use the calculator and got the same angle… always learning.

Alexandre,I just mounted the
cockpit light  (60 degrees).I think I can film a
movie with it.Great lamp. I can’t
wait to change the fore deck light. For that I chose the
lamp with the smallerAngle. . Using the
calculator on the website if figures the lamp to cover a
circle of 16 feet at a height of 30 feet. Thanks
