Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Onan shuts down "Fault Breaker" (CB5)
I have the same BlueSea monitor. It is very easy to work and we use it whenever we plug to shore power BEFORE turning on anything. It is programmed to alarm at <205 VAC and >245 VAC.
We can also monitor the load on the genset as we try to run it at 75-80% capacity to avoid carbon buildup.
With best regards,

Hi Alexandre:
Here is a link to the "multimeter" setup I have on my boat. (Pic as noted by Eric)
Similar concept to what Bill Rouse has. It shows, Watts, Volts, Hertz, and Amps. Nothing like having this data for managing load on the genset and diagnosis bad/good shore power.
Hers is a link to the BlueSea meter.
I am wondering if you have a faulty CB on the aft port side of the genset (the line CB) that isn't opening as it should. On mine if I overlaid the genset that line breaker opens and the genset does not shut down.
On my boat, I can charge batteries and make water, or make water and run an air conditioner or two. If the batteries aren't too low then I can eek out water making + battery charging + 1 AC unit.
Let us know what you find.

Bob:
If you have the same genset as I do, Onan 7MDKAL-421 Spec B, then you will need a new exhaust gasket, PN 185-6853 to do this inspection (about $3.50 US). The Exhaust Mixing Elbow is PN 155-3261-02 (E086), per the parts manual. I have my local Onan dealer procuring 4 gaskets and a mixing elbow for me as we speak. Fortunately at the time of the initial diagnosis I had a gasket "in stock" in my spares. I installed the gasket with a very thin coat of Permatex High Temp Red RTV. Leak free so far. There was evidence of some corrosion around the sealing surface of the gasket. I think the back pressure of sea water into the exhaust manifold combined with exhaust had made the gasket leak. If there is any evidence of corrosion around the gasket that fits between the black casting of the exhaust manifold and the exhaust mixing elbow then I would bet there is blockage of the elbow. Hello Eric,
there are now machines that do a very good job. In France we call it "hydro-gommage" which can be translated by water-erasing. In fact, this is a soft sand blasting with water and a special kind of sand based on sodium bicarbonate (ARMEX). With these machines, as Ian wrote, the operator can do a very accurate job, not removing any gel-coat. Have a look at GRITCO dot FR (in english) or aerogommage dash probanet dot fr (french speaking).
Good luck for this job. Your hull will be happy and faster...

Hello Warren,
the barrier that AMEL spreads while manufacturing the hull is made of isophtalic polyester resin with 1-2 mm glass scales. It is put just after the gel-coat is spread into the mould. AMEL started this process in 1987 as some boats made in Europe were starting to get "blisters" on the outside of the hull, under the gel-coat.
However, your Sharki may have never suffered "blistering". Don't use too powerful high pressure machine to wash your hull (maximum 80 bars) as this is a major cause for starting blistering and osmosis.
Good luck for your hull works.

I have always used International Micron 66 or Micron 77. I do not believe Micron 77 is available in the US or any country influenced by what the EPA allows...I have seen it here in Martinique. FYI, the EPA has not approved a single new bottom paint in the last 7 years (politics). Alex, There is a photo on the Amel website of my setup for incoming electric to Kimberlite. There is a Amp meter, a frequency meter, a volt meter , and a circuit breaker. They are mounted on the port access panel above the dishwasher outboard of the AC panel.. I always check the voltage before turning on the boat. One time in my old boat I plugged into a normal 110 volt outlet and I had 440 volts. When I know the voltage is correct I turn on the breaker allowing the electric to flow into the boat.
If you can’t find it send me your email and I will send you a photo. It is very useful to be able to constantly see the voltage etc. in big red numbers. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376

Alex,
Your model Onan will handle about 25 amps...mine about 30 amps.
Each A/C pulls about 5 amps, more when starting up...DO NOT to start all of them at the same time. If you have a large battery charger (50-100 amps) it may pull 8-10 amps, and the clothes washer will pull 2 amps, unless the selection you are using heats the water, then it will pull 10 amps. Remember, the microwave may pulls much as 8 amps, the dish washer 11 amps when heating water, the water heater about 3 amps, and the 160 liter water maker will pull 15 amps.
I think it is prudent to have a Volt/Amp/Frequency meter connected at the 220VAC panel so that you are checking as you run the generator and when connecting to shore power. I have seen 220-250VAC shore power as little as 150VAC...this certainly will damage systems! Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Spreader Angle
Olivier Beaute
Hello Daniel, in fact, the spreaders should be the bissector of the angle made by the shroud. On the main mast, as the top shroud is almost straight at the first spreaders, but also, as the intermediate shroud makes a bigger angle, the spreaders should be raised a bit from the horizontal. The second spreaders are a bit more raised because the angle of the top shroud is smaller. Your spreaders shoudn't be horizontal. I hope this is clear enough... When I was working at AMEL's, while preparing the mast setting, we had a very simple way of setting the spreaders: marking the shroud with a permanent marker, when the shroud is lying on the mast, the mark is made where the spreader's bolt is (mark the cable at the bottom of the spreader's bolt). If you want to check this on your boat with the masts standing, this means the distance from the top clevis pin of the shroud to the bottom of the spreaders bolt (on the mast) is the distance on the shroud where the U-bolt attaches it to the spreader's end. Practically: tie a thin rope to the clevis pin, bring it to the second spreaders bolt (bottom of the bolt), mark it, and bring it to the spreader's end, the mark should match the U-bolt position. For the first spreaders check, your thin rope will need to go through the second spreader's end before you bring it to the spreaer's end. For more questions, feel free to ask me. Olivier. And now I learn from a rig tuning book that the angle of the shrouds above and below the spreader to the spreader should be the equal. I guess, that was not the case originally at my Santorin. Bill, On my A/C units there is a small white timer , like the one in the transfer switch. If you look at the timers they should be set at different times. About 20 seconds apart so they start in sequence if you turn them all on at once. The secret it to turn them all on at once, or wait a minute and a half between startups, as the second one you turn on might be the one with the 60 second delay. Re-reading the owner manual of the genset, it seems I put too much load… I am very cautious, about starting one by one each to the device (and wait to hear the compressor for the air conditioning, etc.). I selected the heat on the washing (80*C) , but I waited about 25 minutes before using, to have the water hot from running the genset (not sure if it actually works like that). During my next run (at shore), I will check the voltage. Not sure if I can easily check amp nor frequency with my current volt meter (will read the owner manual). Bill, Was that Harmonie owned by Don & Anne Myers? If so, you made a great choice. I am sure glad that you walked away from that Kemah boat. Bill BeBe 387 On Fri, Feb 12, 2016 at 1:16 PM, greatketch@... [amelyachtowners] <amelyachtowners@...> wrote:

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Onan shuts down "Fault Breaker" (CB5)
Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>
Alex, Your model Onan will handle about 25 amps...mine about 30 amps. There are several choices of meters...I installed this one about 10 years ago: http://www.cruzpro.com/vaf110.html Bill BeBe 387 Does this explain what is happening? The Onan is being overloaded.
