Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Rack and pinion Disassembly - Super Maramu

hobie_ind@...

I thought I'd post a quick update.

A big hammer and a brass block did the trick in removing the wheel as per Olivier's advice.  A couple of days of liberal application of penetrating oil probably also helped while I was waiting for parts.   Once the wheel was off, removing a retaining clip, removing the fwd support bracket by the autopilot sprocket and unbolting the racks allowed the shaft to be removed relatively easily in place without pulling everything out from the back .  A few broken teeth on one of the racks was clearly the problem.

Maud at Amel was great to deal with.  After contacting her on a Wednesday. Following a few emails with photos and a phone call to confirm the correct parts, shipping details and payment, a pair of racks, a new steering shaft and a pair of upgraded steel retaining blocks (to replace the plastic blocks which connect the rack bodies to the steering cable sheaths) were winging their way to Fiji by Friday!  Excellent service in my opinion.

I got the parts yesterday (about 10 days after shipping - DHL was a bit slow, but I'd requested them since there's a local agent to help with customs clearance), had a local shop press off the bearing and press it on the new shaft this morning.  The only glitch in reassembly was that slot for the retaining clip on the new shaft was too narrow for the original retaining clip.  We found another clip at the shop that fit and a few hrs later everything was back together.  It really does make a difference when everything is so easy to access!  I do love Amel's attention to making systems accessible for maintenance.

Now, we're back to exploring Fiji a bit more before looking in mid-Nov for a weather window to jump to NZ.   Loving it!

Mark

Obviously white is the Onan color. I measured the hose on my Onan at inside diameter 25mm.

Ben,

I am not sure what problem you refer to, but the most common problem other that a clogged pump is a failed pump.

I replaced the pump Thompson washer pump from one from espares.com

Hi Eric,

The check valve is to keep a head of water for the impeller to run wet as soon as it starts turning.  Just a further precaution… inexpensive too.

My mate also told me to order the diverter AND the connector nipples.  I asked for the entire kit as per the photo on my mate’s paper article for his Grand Bank maties..

Hi Eric,

Not sure but I bet they’ll ship to the USA if asked.

I am awaiting a reply to my email as we speak.  I think that between the Vetus duck bill valve on the intake side plus the “blade catchment gizmo”, I should spend less time faffing around with the Onan.

I also have a complete second raw water pump ready for action in my spares.

Oops…
I didn’t mean to write that on the forum…
I thought I replied Derick directly…
But it’s ok, not a big deal.

As always thanks Bill,
I thought of St Martin, but another Amel owner in a similar situation, went last year and the french customs intercept him by RIB.
I was also told to be very far from territorial water as they send helicopters from martinique…

When I purchased my boat in 2012 it was ok not to have the VAT paid for the French Antilles, just had to pay it when going to Europe.
Since the law changed…
I met another Swiss also french resident (non Amel boat owners) that had very bad experiences, the boat was sized and they wanted to charge 3 times the VAT as penalty… 3 x 20%…

Anyway, as always thanks for your input!
If not in 2016, we will meet again in 2017! Would love to have a tour of BeBe!

Alex,
Since St Martin is divided and one
side Dutch and the other French, and you do not clear
between when traveling by land, you could go to St. Martin,
go through the bridge into the lagoon and clear into the
Dutch authorities. Once there, you, not your boat, can
freely travel between the two sides.
Everything I am telling you was as
it was in 2007.

Alexandre,

Yes,

I have ordered the Aquafax 32 amp galvanic isolator, the
one

with the meter.  Bill Rouse has convinced me of the

superiority of being able to monitor actively.  I got
the

same story from Bill Lampard at mecmarine.co.uk that
you

did.  The should be getting their stock in by Thursday
and

will ship my order as soon as possible after that.  I
will

be leaving for Antigua on November 8th, so the timing is

tight.  I suggest we both ship separately to better
insure

receipt before we have to leave the US.

Hope to cross paths in the

Caribbean.  Brava will stay in Antigua until mid
December

(I have maintenance to do) and then I think I will sail

South to Guadeloupe, the Isles des Saintes, Dominica and

Martinique.

Bill & Judy Rouse <yahoogroups@...>

Alex,

Since St Martin is divided and one side Dutch and the other French, and you do not clear between when traveling by land, you could go to St. Martin, go through the bridge into the lagoon and clear into the Dutch authorities. Once there, you, not your boat, can freely travel between the two sides.

Everything I am telling you was as it was in 2007.

Perfect Derick,

Nov 25 I am leaving the Exumas toward Turks & Caicos.
Then Dominican Republic from Jan to Mar, then Puerto Rico and the US Virgin island until July where I will be heading to Greneda for the hurricane season.
So looks like I am following your track (I travel slowly as I have to manage my businesses from the boat). May be we meet after Martinique.

Note: I am Swiss but a French tax payer and the VAT is not paid on my vessel and the French have changed the law… so either I pay the 20% VAT or I live somewhere else or I don’t go to Martinique, Guadeloupe and St Martin…

But will meet one day!

Alexandre

Alexandre,
Yes,
I have ordered the Aquafax 32 amp galvanic isolator, the one
with the meter.  Bill Rouse has convinced me of the
superiority of being able to monitor actively.  I got the
same story from Bill Lampard at mecmarine.co.uk that you
did.  The should be getting their stock in by Thursday and
will ship my order as soon as possible after that.  I will
be leaving for Antigua on November 8th, so the timing is
tight.  I suggest we both ship separately to better insure
receipt before we have to leave the US.
Hope to cross paths in the
Caribbean.  Brava will stay in Antigua until mid December
(I have maintenance to do) and then I think I will sail
South to Guadeloupe, the Isles des Saintes, Dominica and
Martinique.
All the
best,
Derick

Hi Bill,

I have a MDKAL and from the parts catalog for this unit, I’m on the case… :-)

Thanks for the suggestion about Emek but…

JP,

Do you have the MDKAV? If so, it is part number 503-2230.

When I Googled "Onan 503-2230," I see lots of places that sell it. I also know that Emek had a complete set of MDKAV hoses in stock when I was last in Gocek, Turkey. I am not sure if Riza still has them in stock, but you should email him if you are nearby. His email address is cagdas"at"emekmarin.com

I normally order all of my parts from the Onan/Cummins dealer in Houston, Texas. His email is thomas.n.moore"at"cummins.com

I would think that an auto parts shop would have radiator/water hose at 25mm (1") with a 90 degree turn. The other end of the hose you need is straight. Have you checked an auto parts shop?

Hi Gang,

The rubber elbow at the raw water intake side is elongated and leaks.  I must change it ASAP.

Contacting the usual Euro suspects, not a single unit found and they talk 5-6 weeks delivery time.

Does anyone have a spare?  Can you direct me to a US based supplier for this part?  There must be an automotive equivalent, I just don't know which.  It's a simple 90 degree elbow with a 25 MM ID.

Thanks

South to Guadeloupe, the Isles des Saintes, Dominica and
Martinique.
All the
best,

Good morning Derick,

MEC Marine just replied they won’t have it until Thursday…
I ask for the shipping cost to the US (Texas) where I will be, also told them that I will only be there from Nov 2 until Nov 6…

I like the Aquafax model because of the meter… are you going to order the SafeShore Marine model?
No meter, but seems a strong model.
If you can let me know the shipping cost to the US.

Thanks, sincerely, Alexandre

Thanks for the offer Alexandre.  However I think I
will order the galvanic isolator separately because of my
travel timing constraints.  On the other hand, do you want
me to order two and send the second to you?

Re: Onan cooling and impeller life extension

Thanks for the offer Alexandre.  However I think I will order the galvanic isolator separately because of my travel timing constraints.  On the other hand, do you want me to order two and send the second to you?

Hi Guys,
My first posting since joining.
Received this regarding Galvanic Isolator.
Also looked at SafeShore Marine, direct UK manufacturer go Galvanic Isolators. They have a good explanation in a You Tube video.
Hopes this helps.

Good afternoon, Barry.
Many thanks for calling us earlier concerning the Aquafax 32A Galvanic Isolator.

The instructions were the same for both models, so I was able to scan them and attach to this message.
Just to remind you, the cost of 8-40991 isolator would be £140.00 plus £10.00 UK freight, plus VAT at 20%.
If you do place an order, allow 2-3 working days to receive the goods – and instruct us to issue the HMRC VAT form 407 for you to claim £30.00 VAT back from us at a later date.
Payment may be by electronic bank transfer, or credit/debit card.

If you require any further information, please only just ask. Here at MEC Marine we can deal with most products on your boat.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Replacing seacock

Derick, Thanks for the detailed response. I was hoping all the fiberglass did not need to be cut out. I will look at the photos that Gary posted , should help to understand what is covered by the glass.
Thanks Again,

Pat,

Just did this nine months ago.  I found that Gary Silver's photos in the album "SM holding tank valve replacement" were a big help to see what I was trying to do.

After taking pictures of the setup, first remove all of the clamps and bonding wires. Do not worry about the connections to the pipe on the top of the valve - this will be easier to undo after/while unscrewing the bottom of the valve.

You need to strip away the fibreglass from the bottom of the valve.  I found that flexible files (look like wire with small spiral projections) can be wrapped around the back of the pipe and used to saw away at the fibreglass.  You need to add a length of strapping to each end of the wire file, so that you can run it back and forth.  Be sure to put pla stic down to collect the fibreglass dust and DON'T BREATHE IT IN or spread it around (as you probably already know, fiberglass dust is very irritating on skin, and you must not get it in your eyes, mouth or lungs.  I wore plastic goggles and a paper face mask.  Clean the dust up as you go with single-use moist paper towels.

Some of the initial filing action needs to take place behind the pipe (between the pipe and the hull) to get below the hexagonal wrench, then you can try a more horizontal angle.  Change the angle so that you uniformly cut into the fibreglass in back, in front and on the two sides.  I went through several flexible files (they broke) so be sure to get a dozen or so. Be careful at the end to remove only fibreglass and not the brass threads of the through-hull fitting.  You may find it necessary to chip away at the thin layer of fibreglass on the hexagonal part of the valve - I did not.  There eventu ally needs to be enough room between the pipe and the hull for the hexagonal flanges to turn.

You will need a large pipe wrench with a long extension handle to get enough leverage to unscrew the old valve. You are unscrewing the valve from a male threaded through hull fitting, so the hex nut at the bottom of the valve is part of the valve itself. Be sure to remove the valve handle or it will get in the way during the unscrewing of the valve. Once the valve begins to turn, you are almost home free.  The top of the valve with the grey plastic hose barb should turn easily in the upper hose as you are undoing the valve.

All this can be done while the boat is in the water, because the end of the through-hull fitting is above the waterline.

Attach the plastic hose barb into you new ball valve (with handle removed) and screw the valve into place using your favorite threadlock material top and bot tom.  I did NOT re-fibreglass the valve, but used a silicone rubber sealant to prevent valve movement.  No leaks or movement in the last 9 months (sound of knocking on wood).

As I recall, the ball valve needs to be 1.25 inch ID with British Straight Pipe Threads (BSPT).  The threads are therefore not self-locking and need the threadlock.  Check Gary's pictures and previous threads on this forum for more details.  I found that I did need to cut down the valve lever on the valve I bought, it was too long to go vertical (in the open position).

Don't forget to put the bonding wires back in place!

Best of luck!
