Yep....Yanmar 80 turbo. We are trying to sort out the 2 alternator option, and then get the engine to the yard in St Augustine. With a little luck, we will get North by late July or early August. You probably know better than most how these things can go, so we are keeping our fingers crossed. The boat is ready other than the new motor.

I think you're making the right decision about the engine.  Is it a Yanmar 80HP?  Turbo?

Thanks for the info. We have decided to go with the Yanmar 80hp, and not risk any Cdrive issues. I feel that 80hp is adequate, and I like the concept of less fuel consumption as well.  Hopefully, we will have the details sorted, and the engine ordered tomorrow, as we are missing some nice sailing time.

Windpilot Amel 54

Wolfgang Weber <webercardio@...>

Hi to the group,
many owners have a second autopilot - on Amel 54 ferropilot - or have an autopilot as spare.
How often did you have a failure and which part of ferropilot is needed ? Second complete installation with hydraulic , electronic needed ?
Did anyone had a windpilot on the stern for the case if the ferropilot fails ?

Thank you

Bowthruster Amel 54

Wolfgang Weber <webercardio@...>

Hi,
after using the bowthruster in the habour with wind 28 knts from the side the bowthruster failed - happy that all lines were fixed. Fuse etc were ok. After a while of rest the bowthruster was working good again. I think it was automatic shutdown by thermal fuse ?
As the bowthruster Box has no ventilation I am thinking about a passive or active ventilation to the front compartment.
Common failure ? Any comment ?

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Repower

Hi Steve, I enquired of Amel about repowering from the 80 hp to 110 and was told that the 110 required a different C drive and if the larger motor was used with the same C drive failure would result. Why don't you ask Amel yourself.
Hope this helps.

We are considering a re-power on our 1992 Perkins Prima 80hp equipped SM. I would prefer the 110hp Yanmar, but have seen on some post, the C drive on the older drives may not be built for the extra horsepower. Any truth to this, or are all SM C drives created equal?  Also, any opinions on whether the extra horsepower is all that beneficial with this boat. What special considerations do I need when ordering the new Yanmar? For example, gearbox type and ratio.

Thanks in advance for you help, as I'm trying to make a decision in the next couple of days.

Hi Steve,

I am sailing  around the Med with a Turkish friend who also had a SM. He repowered with a Volvo 75 and couldn't be happier.  More power and better economy than his old Perking.

Hello Steve,
My TDM22 only has 650 hours… so
I’m keeping it for some time.
However, if I was thinking of a
engine replacement, I would think seriously about 80 or so
horses in non turbo charger configuration.
TC’s are a PITA.
Kind regards,

having it installed and propped appropriately.KentSM243Kristy

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Repower

Germain Jean-Pierre <jgermain@...>

Hello Steve,

My TDM22 only has 650 hours… so I’m keeping it for some time.

However, if I was thinking of a engine replacement, I would think seriously about 80 or so horses in non turbo charger configuration.

TC’s are a PITA.

Kind regards,

Jean-Pierre Germain

Hi Steve,
Ask Amel if your drive is robust enough for the 110.  I understand that it was beefed up at some point prior to 1999, but don't know when that was.
If you do repower with the 110, use the Yanmar mounts recommended by Yanmar...or comparable.  In spite of the problems I've had, I'm happy I made the change after several years of dealing with my Volvo TMD22 78HP.
I can't say that the power difference is significant in terms of performance or fuel efficiency, so if you find something you like in the 80 HP range, I'd be happy with that as well.  Main thing is having it installed and propped appropriately.
