Well, Lady Annila has many of the SM2K configurations, so your theory may be correct.

Kent,

I should be around.

The slip at the end of the dock is a desirable t-dock

It is usually taken by transients as it is so easy to dock.

If you plan on being around on the weekend-try to reserve that slip in advance. I should be around those dates.

I've been looking askance at my unused dishwasher, too.  I was thinking of adding a small ice maker there.

I use the galley reefer for food, the aft dinette seat cooler as a beerator (actually any drinks) and an overflow for food that won't fit in the galley reefer.  I use the forward dinette seat cooker as a freezer.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Re: Question regarding procedures for aligning engine on SM

karkauai

Hi Todd,
Not sure what you've gotten in replies, but here's my understanding of the alignment procedure.  I have SM2K #243, but I think the procedure should be the same.

First install the angle iron beds on new properly sized engine mounts.  Use the old mounts to find the proper placement of the new ones. (Remove only one mount at a time, put the new engine bolt on the mount through the hole where the old one was.  Mark new holes on the hull stringer if the new mount is not the same as the old one.  Repeat with the other new mounts.)  Drill and tap new holes as marked if necessary. (There is a thick steel plate about 1 1/2 inches into the stringer that has to be drilled and tapped for your bolts unless you are using  mounts identical to the old ones... it takes a pretty long drill bit and tap.)  Install the new mounts. (I had to grind down a hump on the stringers at the forward mounts to get them to sit flush on the stringers...it was about 4 mm high and grinding did not go through the glass on the stringer.)
Next install the angle iron "beds" on the engine bolts as they were on the old mounts.  Don't tighten the bolts to the stringers all the way.  The beds should be centered  exactly as they were on the original installation.  The beds will need to be adjusted to height later, but for now put them at the heights above the stringers that the old ones were.  The front and back heights will probably be different.
Now install the CDrive.  It will essentially lock itself into place when seated in the thru-hull opening.  Bolt it to the beds using new mounts exactly like the originals.  The lower part of the drive will not move or tilt in a forward-aft direction if the vertical shaft is seated properly.  It will move some side-to-side until you bolt it to the keel with the stainless sleeve and rubber hose bushings.  The bolt is stainless and the threads in the keel are not, so use some waterproof grease on the bolt.

Have a machine shop make a fixed (not flexible) coupling of the exact thickness of your flexible coupling. Bolt holes will have to match those on your flexible coupling as well.

Attach the fixed coupling to your CDrive.  Now bring the engine down onto the beds and ease it forward to the fixed coupling.  The transmission to coupling tolerance should be 1/1000 of an inch.  Adjust the engine side to side by moving the mounts on the stringers (the bolt holes on one end of the mount will be oval shaped instead of round and should allow the bed to be moved ~1/4 inch side to side on the bolt holding the mount to the bed).  Adjust it vertically by using the nuts on the engine mount bolts going through the beds.  If further vertical adjustment is necessary, shims can be fitted between the beds and the engine.
Keep at it until there is NO gap around the transmission to fixed coupling connection.  In neutral the transmission and CDrive should turn easily and with no wobble.  Watch the connection carefully as you turn the shaft to look for any gap anywhere around the connection.

Once you've got alignment to satisfactory tolerance with the fixed coupling, tighten down the bolts that fix the mounts to the stringers, and the nuts that fix the height of the beds, and tighten the nuts that fix the beds to the mounts.
Check alignment tolerance again to confirm that nothing moved as you were tightening bolts and nuts.

Confirm height of any shims needed between the beds and the engine.

Now remove the engine from the beds and fixed coupling, and slide it back a little.  Install the flexible coupling, and bring the engine back forward to make the final attachments to the bed and flexible coupling.

Again, turn the shaft in neutral and watch the small gap between the two halves of the flexible coupling to make certain it is the same width all the way around the coupling.  If not, start over with the alignment using the fixed coupling.

Once after a few hours running time, and again every week or so for the next 100 hours check all mounting bolts and nuts and the flexible coupling bolts to ensure they haven't gotten loose.  If something's loose, check the coupling gap closely to make sure nothing has changed.

I hope that's reasonably clear.  Olivier, anyone else...what did I leave out?

Hi, sorry, for not correctly entering the boat info. It is a 1990 SM hull #25. I have the old style drive unit with a MAX prop. But of course, if I change the adjustment on the mounts of the bed, then this could put tremendous pressure on the C drive. I'm just trying to find out the steps / proceedure to check and correct the alignment of the engine, bed and C drive.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the reply. How do you like the boat? Where are you headed when you go south?
I am afraid I am stuck here this winter, but definitely will be going down to the Caribbean next fall.

We are in Wilmington, still learning the boat.  I am sorry you have experienced the Volvo problems.  I am not aware of similar issues in other 54s.

Our plan is to head south in December.

Jeff, as you recall I bought Bozo Cinq (now Phantom). How are you guys doing with Last Tango (ex Lone Star I believe)? Where are you now?

I still have engine problems that have kept me grounded (er watered?) here in Annapolis since arrival from Ft. Lauderdale in June. After replacing the original high-pressure fuel pump and cleaning/rebuilding the injectors, I am now waiting for my second high-pressure fuel pump - the first replacement was reportedly "bad." I sure hope it is the problem.

I was wondering what problems others have had with their 54's that have necessitated a complete Volvo overhaul? I read that in this thread.

Thanks,

Hi Tony:

Our boat was next off the line after yours. The Xantrex manual has no model number.  However, if it will help, the number on the back of the manual is 975-0111-01-01.  I suppose this could be a publication number.

Does anybody know the precise model no. of the Xantrex battery monitor fitted as standard to the Amel 54 (no.102). I'm trying to download a user manual, and all I can find are the Link 10 and Link 20 model manuals. The label on the bottom of the rectangular display unit just says Battery Monitor, with the manufacturer, Xantrex, written in large letters at the top.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Question regarding procedures for aligning engine on SM

smallworldsailor@...

Hi, sorry, for not correctly entering the boat info. It is a 1990 SM hull #25. I have the old style drive unit with a MAX prop. The prop is fine, and the vibration actually becomes LESS when in gear and at higher RPMs, so I don't believe the problem is in the drive train itself, but rather in the engine bed alignment. But of course, if I change the adjustment on the mounts of the bed, then this could put tremendous pressure on the C drive. I'm just trying to find out the steps / proceedure to check and correct the alignment of the engine, bed and C drive.
Thanks!

Hi Paul;

Aty is my wife, I'm Mohammad.

I'm glad you remove it.

Ours had some water that had penetrated as well. Not quite as much as you have. Riza, from Emek Marin in Turkey had his guys look at it and they determined that it was beyond repair. He ordered a new from from Amel. As far as I know these are custom made for Amel and we cannot buy direct. Good luck.

Aty,

I have managed to remove it with your advice so many thanks for that indeed. It looks like its half full of water! My guess is that you had the same problem and it was not viable to repair so you replaced it - is that correct? If so did you order a new one from Amel or is there somewhere else I can get a replacement from?

Cheers,
Paul

I don't have a problem with an Amel owner posting it here when they are selling their boat.  Anything more than that seems out of place.
Perhaps there should be a thread titled Amels for Sale where people looking to buy could find all the boats for sale.

Amel will feature my brand new Amel 55 Araucaria in Newport, September 17-20 and Annapolis, October 8-12.

We went to the Annapolis boat show just to have a look last year, instantly fell in love with the 55 and one thing led to another.... Went twice to La Rochelle for inspection and handover. I can reassure all of you that the Chantiers Amel guys are absolutely dedicated and professional, pursuing the Capitain's vision, and that they are thriving as a company. The boat is all they portend it to be and more. It is fast, it points and it has kept the distinctive features that we all like in the Amels. I intend to race in the Newport-Bermuda (volunteers?) and others next year and I am convinced we will be quite competitive.

It would be cold blooded and ungrateful if I would not mention Moonshot, our wonderful, faithful and reliable SuperMaramu 2000 (vintage 2003) who we thought will never part with. Now I can understand when people write about how hard it is to part with one's boat, and there are days when I wish I could find a place or a reason to keep Moonshot. We loved this boat and we pampered her (putting last year new sails, new Bimini and new Furuno) and maintained her professionally for years no expenses spared. But sadly Moonshot is now looking for a deserving new owner and I will be grateful if you would help find him or her. (BlueNose, Glen Walters, 401-855-4355)

If you cannot make it to the boat shows and want to come aboard Araucaria, look us up in our mooring in Brenton Cove in Newport during the sailing season.

I remain grateful to this forum and participants, for all the great stuff that gets written.
