Hi Gang, The rubber elbow at the raw water intake side is elongated and leaks. I must change it ASAP. Contacting the usual Euro suspects, not a single unit found and they talk 5-6 weeks delivery time. Does anyone have a spare? Can you direct me to a US based supplier for this part? I have already emailed Bill's contact at Aquafax, but unlike Alexandre did not get a reply. Perhaps Alexandre tried calling Aquafax by telephone. The Aquafax website only lists the 16amp galvanic isolator, and even then, according to Alexandre, they are no longer selling the galvanic isolators directly to the public. In searching the web, I have been unable to find an Aquafax distributor, much less one that carries the 32 amp galvanic isolator (part number 8-40991). Pat, Just did this nine months ago. I found that Gary Silver's photos in the album "SM holding tank valve replacement" were a big help to see what I was trying to do. After taking pictures of the setup, first remove all of the clamps and bonding wires. Do not worry about the connections to the pipe on the top of the valve - this will be easier to undo after/while unscrewing the bottom of the valve. You need to strip away the fibreglass from the bottom of the valve. I found that flexible files (look like wire with small spiral projections) can be wrapped around the back of the pipe and used to saw away at the fibreglass. You need to add a length of strapping to each end of the wire file, so that you can run it back and forth. Be sure to put plastic down to collect the fibreglass dust and DON'T BREATHE IT IN or spread it around (as you probably already know, fiberglass dust is very irritating on skin, and you must not get it in your eyes, mouth or lungs. I wore plastic goggles and a paper face mask. Clean the dust up as you go with single-use moist paper towels. Some of the initial filing action needs to take place behind the pipe (between the pipe and the hull) to get below the hexagonal wrench, then you can try a more horizontal angle. Change the angle so that you uniformly cut into the fibreglass in back, in front and on the two sides. I went through several flexible files (they broke) so be sure to get a dozen or so. Be careful at the end to remove only fibreglass and not the brass threads of the through-hull fitting. You may find it necessary to chip away at the thin layer of fibreglass on the hexagonal part of the valve - I did not. There eventually needs to be enough room between the pipe and the hull for the hexagonal flanges to turn. You will need a large pipe wrench with a long extension handle to get enough leverage to unscrew the old valve. You are unscrewing the valve from a male threaded through hull fitting, so the hex nut at the bottom of the valve is part of the valve itself. Be sure to remove the valve handle or it will get in the way during the unscrewing of the valve. Once the valve begins to turn, you are almost home free. The top of the valve with the grey plastic hose barb should turn easily in the upper hose as you are undoing the valve. All this can be done while the boat is in the water, because the end of the through-hull fitting is above the waterline. Attach the plastic hose barb into you new ball valve (with handle removed) and screw the valve into place using your favorite threadlock material top and bottom. I did NOT re-fibreglass the valve, but used a silicone rubber sealant to prevent valve movement. No leaks or movement in the last 9 months (sound of knocking on wood). As I recall, the ball valve needs to be 1.25 inch ID with British Straight Pipe Threads (BSPT). The threads are therefore not self-locking and need the threadlock. Check Gary's pictures and previous threads on this forum for more details. I found that I did need to cut down the valve lever on the valve I bought, it was too long to go vertical (in the open position). Don't forget to put the bonding wires back in place! Best of luck! Replacing seacock

I need to replace the seacock in the forward head that drains the holding tank. Can someone tell me how to go about removing the old one. Below the handle there is a place to put a wrench on , can I simply turn it and unscrew it from whatever resides inside the mound of fiberglass ? Is there a female threaded pipe imbedded in the fiberglass ? I chipped away the gelcoat , but when I hit glass fibers I stopped, I could not see what is in the glass and thought I better ask before removing any more material. Thanks, Pat SM Shenanigans |
