This thread was inactive for a week and it has done it job. I got great answers and learned a lot. I want to thank those that were so nice and helpful. Clearly the conversion is doable but the benefits don't seem to be more than the cons. All this new unpleasantness is uncalled for and not helpful. Just let the thread RIP. There is enough to do to keep a Super Maramu well maintained. In my case, the diesel cost is negligible compare to the cost of owning the vessel. Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] hydro generator
Patrick McAneny
Ric, I assume while you are producing electric from the alternator ,it is inducing more drag than the prop freewheeling not producing electric. If you are saying that I did not need to remove it , just not turn the key and engage it , I agree. I did not intend to use it and the alt. needed to be rebuilt so I removed it. It can quickly be back in business if someone ever wants to use it, its a slick idea. If I had not gone solar, I would have used it.
Thanks, Pat

Mine is set so that the ignition key must be removed and inserted in the shaft alternator switch. This is to prevent charging the batteries from two sources. Works great.

Bilge pump hose connection
I purchased a new bilge pump from Reya. The new pump shipped with different size hose barbs than the original pump. It shipped with 1 ¼” Barbed × 1” Male NPT Threaded. The barb end is too big for the existing hose. I purchase the next size down 1” Barbed × 1” Male NPT. This is too small for the existing hose. Does anyone know where I can source a 1” Male NPT to 1 1/8” hose barb / 28mm? All I can find is 1” or 11/4” hose barbs. There does not seem to be a size in-between.
I could take the barbs off the original pump but I was hoping to rebuild it as keep it as a spare (it just needs new bearings). Also, the adaptors appeared to be glued in. Most likely I will damage them if I try to remove.
With best regards,
Mark

Amel Sconces
n33077@...
So I dropped my Amel sconces off at Baltimore Brass Works for re-furbishment. The lamps are incandescent and I am thinking of converting them to LED> Small one are BA15D and the large sconce is a BA25D (15 & 25mm respectively). The BA15D LED bulbs are easy to get. I'm hoping warm white works. The BA25D is another story. I can keep the incandescent bulb, if I have to, but I hoping if anyone knew where I can get a BA25D LED bulb. The other option is to change out the socket. The lamps are to be re-wired, polished and re-lacquered. So anyone have any ideas as to what to replace it with? I was thinking possibly an E14 type socket (Edison screw type socket 14mm). I have about 1 1/8" diameter to work with Thanks Aras Sharki #163 |

This group was founded by its owner for "owners of yachts built by Chantiers Amel in La Rochelle." Which model Amel do you own?
Also, this group specifically asks that members "...refrain from broadcasting your professional activity." I notice that you prefer to sign your postings with Douglas E Knapp, MSAOM, LAc. which stands for "Advanced Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine." It appears that you are posting in the Amel Group in order to find "Advanced Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine" patients. Either that, or as your Subject Line states, you want to know if we would buy an electric Amel.
While we all dream, I do not think that your dreams interest most of us, and they have absolutely nothing to do with Amel Yachts. There are 238 opinions on the subject that you inquire about on Cruisers Forum. I earlier suggested that you pose your question there because there are many resident experts on CF. For a link to your question, go here: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f48/electrical-propulsion-vs-diesel-propulsion-76555.html
I am simply a member of this group, but I am asking the owner/moderator to review your application.

So, first of all, I am not going to kill (not that swapping out a motor is killing it anyway) a wonderful Amel ship without a gaining a big advantage. At this point it is an interesting thought experiment only.
It is true that oil has a high energy density but it can also be quite hard to get at some ports and costs a lot at others. We are often looking at over 1000$ just to tank up. It also runs out as we don't have huge tanks on the ship.
Mr. Bill Rouse, I think he might have made one had the tech been good enough during his life but it was not. It is only in the last few years that motors, batteries and solar panels have improved enough to even be considered. I feel that he would have build one, if it improved the capabilities of his design.
I can't make a champagne maker but how about a bubbly water maker and an alcohol still? Or carbonated water and wine? Would that do?
The basics of the idea are simple loose the diesel engine, tank (or just reduce it for a hybrid design) and lead batteries and add the solar panels, the motor and light battery. It is not like you are doing any real damage to the ship. It could all be put back without to much work. Might need to find some low wattage appliances or lose others.

Re: [Amel Yacht Owners] Foil banging inside the mainmast
sailormon <kimberlite@...>
Aldo, I take a long thicker line and tie it to the Main halyard swivel. I raise the halyard to the top of the mast and furl it standing as far aft as possible. This wraps the foil in a heavy line and acts as a bumper. I then tie it off to the boom putting a little tension on it. It works great. Fair Winds Eric Kimberlite Amel Super Maramu #376
